Hi all,
We are excited to announce that the application is open
<https://goo.gl/forms/dimatR4UKCjWSOwn1> for attending the Wikimedia
Diversity Conference 2017
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Diversity_Conference_2017>, 3-5
November in Stockholm, Sweden.
Please help share this with staff and volunteers who want to work together
and share strategies to support and promote diversity in the Wikimedia
movement.
There are (at least) four reasons to register:
-
Participate: All interested participants must register to show their
interest in attending the conference and that they qualify given the theme
of the conference.
-
Shape the program: The first section of the registration is about the
conference program and the questions are for interested participants to let
the organising team know what they wish to learn, share and the kind of
experience they have from working with diversity in Wikimedia. The
participants are the core of the conference.
-
Lead activities: Anyone who registers can indicate if they want to lead
activities during the conference, such as talks, discussions and/or
training. With this information, the organising team will approach
participants on how to engage in the conference and actively contribute to
shaping the program. There will not be a traditional separate proposal
submission process.
-
Apply for scholarship: The registration form also has a section for
scholarship
application
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Diversity_Conference_2017/Scholar…>
and participants who want to apply for scholarship 2 and 3 should do so by
20 August (they are mainly intended for volunteers).
We look forward to hosting these discussions on diversity and Wikimedia
impact in Stockholm.
Best Regards,
John

Subject: [Wikimedia-l] [fellowship] Opportunity for people working on "open
projects that support a healthy Internet."
To: wikimedia-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org
Hi all,
I wanted to pass along an opportunity that I saw earlier today via Twitter:
https://medium.com/read-write-participate/work-in-the-open-
with-mozilla-1410be0a83b2
It sets up people working on "open projects that support a healthy
Internet" with a mentor, a cohort of like-minded people from all over the
world, and a trip to Mozfest, which is a London-based open Internet
conference I've attended/presented at in past years and found really
mind-expanding due to the cross-disciplinary conversations that take place.
You can see previous projects here: https://mozilla.github.
io/leadership-training/round-3/projects/ — it looks like there's quite a
broad cross-section and many of the projects across the movement might be
applicable. The post notes participants will learn about "best practices
for project setup and communication, tools for collaboration, community
building, and running events."
Thank you to Leila for suggesting I pass this along to this listserv. Feel
free to share it broadly.
- Mel

Hi everybody,
We just received the great news that the Wikimedia Diversity Conference
2017[1] has received the full grant from the Wikimedia Foundation's Event
Grants.[2] We look very much forward to hosting the conference and to
welcome you to Stockholm the 3-5 November 2017.
We now need your help in making it a success! We invite members from your
Wikimedia organization or user group to sign up as ambassadors for the
conference.[3] Ambassadors are champions of Diversity on Wikimedia and
volunteer to use that power to support the conference in several ways.
-
Support before the conference. Ambassadors help communicate to local
communities that the conference will happen and provide updates of the
planning process, such as when to register and how to apply for scholarship
and why submit a proposal. The other way is to provide constructive input
and ideas for the program and for the overall event. Ambassadors can also
organize discussions at other conferences taking place prior to the
Diversity conference.
-
Support during the conference. Ambassadors can also volunteer their
champion powers during the conference to support documentation and curation
of discussions and insights, facilitate the implementation of the program
with the facilitation team, support participants with helpful advice and
on-site information.
-
Support after the conference. Ambassadors help disseminate the knowledge
gained during the conference to their communities and to participate in
networks to continue working with Diversity.
Active participation as an ambassador will support a scholarship
application.
We would be grateful if you could forward this possibility to your
communities.
Furthermore, we are actively looking for more funding from sponsors, but we
do have limited opportunities to provide scholarships and only parts of the
travel costs for participants can currently be covered. If your Wikimedia
organization has the opportunity to provide a full or partial scholarship
for your volunteers or staff, please let us know. We would be happy to
highlight your involvement and support on the conference portal.[3]
If you have any questions or comments, please do not hesitate to get in
contact with us!
We intend to send out the registration form at the end of next week.

Subject: [Wikimedia Announcements] Wikimedia Conference 2017: Report and
more learning material published
To: WikimediaAnnounce-l <WikimediaAnnounce-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Dear Wikimedians,
Three months ago, we welcomed many of you in Berlin to work, discuss and
get inspired at the Wikimedia Conference 2017. We have now published our
extensive and colorful grant report for this event, and you can read it on
Meta:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Conference_2017/Report
In the meantime, the documentation of all sessions is complete. Check it
out on Meta as well:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Conference_2017/Documentation
While preparing the report, we have also written three learning patterns to
capture and share our experiences with other movement event organizers.
1) “Timing, Communication, Preparation: How to support your event
participants in the best way to get a Schengen Visa”
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Learning_patterns/Timing,
_Communication,_Preparation:_How_to_support_your_event_
participants_in_the_best_way_to_get_a_Schengen_Visa
2) “Briefing calls with speakers: A simple way to improve conference
sessions”
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Learning_patterns/
Briefing_calls_with_speakers:_A_simple_way_to_improve_conference_sessions
3) “The Buddy Project: Let’s make your conference more newbie friendly!”
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Learning_patterns/The_
Buddy_Project:_Let%E2%80%99s_make_your_conference_more_newbie_friendly!
And if you think, “wow, that’s a lot!”: David Saroyan, Visiting Wikimedian
at Wikimedia Deutschland from January until April, wrote a blog post about
his experience in the Wikimedia blog:
https://blog.wikimedia.org/2017/06/30/why-i-visiting-wikimedian/
We would like to thank all participants, partners, affiliates and experts
who have contributed to making this such a great event, and the Wikimedia
Foundation for their generous support.
Thank you,
Happy reading,
Cornelius, Nicole, Daniela and Wenke
(the WMCON team)
PS: Stay tuned for our upcoming announcement of the Wikimedia Conference
2018 dates.
