Hello Wikimedia-Cascadians, I just joined the group and want to introduce myself. I am a native Seattleite (Garfield High School, 1984) but majored in German and have lived/worked 12 years of my adult life in Europe (Germany, France, UK, Czech Republic, Netherlands, Luxembourg, Slovakia). Professionally I am an international product manager specialized in localization. I recently left my last position and am looking for a new job based in Seattle with international travel or be based abroad. There are two reasons I joined the Wikimedia-Cascadia group: 1/ Wikimedia is for me the ultimate internet organization: my internet career is a extension of my interest in languages and inspiration of the internet as a communications medium to make information available across languages regardless of time + geography -- exactly what Wikimedia does! I want to be involved with Wikimedia. 2/ I have a social-entrepreneurial idea around digitizing old print periodicals for which I would like to use some of Wikimedia's open-source tools or potentially even partner with Wikimedia itself. I have talked to Jonathan Morgan about it and he suggested I join this group and see if there are some people who would be interested in working on the idea with me. So if anyone in this group (or has friends outside this group) has a passion for digitizing print materials from the past (ex. DIY music/culture magazines, neighborhood newsletters, school newsletters), send me an email. In any case, I hope to meet you in person at an upcoming Wikimedia-Cascadia gathering. Editathon best practices

Hi Cascadians, I've started a page on our wiki about what I think we've learned about editathon best practices, both from our own experience and from other reports that I've read: http://cascadia.wiki/Workroom/Editathon_planning_checklist I've been busy with work so tomorrow's event will happen with less prep done than I would have liked, and I am still a ways from having my hoped-for VisualEditor tutorial complete, but at least with this checklist on our wiki, this will make preparation easier going forward. There should be plenty of room for attendees but parking is limited, so consider using public transit. The themes will be data privacy and security. Editing workshop at the UW Libraries Research Commons on Saturday April 25, starting at 10:30 AM, focuing on the labor movement and the Labor Archives of Washington (http://www.lib.washington.edu/specialcollections/laws/). Editing Wikipedia for school community service hours

Hi all, Many schools in the United States encourage or require students to perform community service hours, such as by cleaning up parks, caring for the disabled, or tutoring younger students. Sometimes more specialized requirements apply, such as university schools of education or health which may require experience that is applicable to a student's desired coursework. Contributing to Wikimedia is one form of accepted community service in a multi-campus Mexican university, and the practice seems to be gaining momentum (see https://blog.wikimedia.org/2015/04/13/wiki-learning-edit-a-thon-mexico/). These community service programs are different from in-class assignments that require Wikipedia editing. Wikipedia can benefit from both kinds of activities. I am wondering, have other Wikimedia affiliates had success with encouraging students to complete community service requirements by contributing to Wikimedia? I am thinking that here in Cascadia, we might encourage schools to allow this option, and other affiliates also might want to explore this possibility. Thanks, Pine

Hello, I have mentioned to some supporters of this Cascadia Wikimedia group that a local nonprofit organization called Cascadia Now! might be a good partner organization in outreach. Among the reasons I have suggested this is that they share common mission, outreach scope, like-minded participants, similar size, and some goals with the Wikimedia community. <http://www.cascadianow.org/> In past conversations they have been friendly about discussing partnerships.
