Hi WALRUS members,
In Cascadia we are in very early discussions about hosting a future
Wikiconference USA. Who can we speak with from the NYC conference team
about how you organized, staffed, and funded the conference?
Thanks,
Pine
By popular request we are returning to a Tuesday for our next Cascadia
Wikimedians meetup. We will meet September 9 at Cafe Allegro. A likely
topic of discussion is Wikiconference USA 2016 early planning.

Cascadia Wikimedians,
If any of you collaborate with, or have an interest in working with,
OpenStreetMap, this may interest you. OpenStreetMap Seattle will make a bid
for the 2015 OpenStreetMap SOTM-US conference. If you want to help with the
bid, you can find the meetup group at
http://www.meetup.com/OpenStreetMap-Seattle/ or contact Clifford Snow.
In comments for the last Seattle WP:Meetup for August '14, *Blue
Rasberry* wrote
that there was hope that in 2-3 years there could be a meta:WikiConference
USA <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiConference_USA> in Seattle or
Portland. If any of us are so inclined, perhaps assisting for this bid for
the 2015 OpenStreetMap SOTM-US conference, & then the subsequent
preparation should the bid succeed, would help prepare us in our efforts to
bring WikiConference USA to Cascadia.

Subject: [opensource-107] Bid to host the 2015 State Of The Map-US
Conference
To: opensource-107-announce(a)meetup.com
We are going to prepare a bid to host the 2015 OpenStreetMap SOTM-US
conference here. The request for bids will be made by the US chapter in
late September and due by mid November. Everyone's help will be needed to
craft a winning bid. I've only attended two SOTM-US conferences, but really
enjoyed both. The conference runs two days over a weekend, plus usually a
code sprint day and another day for workshops. The cost for last years
conference in San Francisco was only around $80 so much more affordable.
And they have the usual scholarships.
They have tentatively plan to hold the conference Mid April. For us the
weather is a concern. On the bright side (like that ever happens in April)
costs should be better. I believe we can make a case for holding it in the
summer, but I'd like to hear everyone thoughts.
As the local host we are responsible for:
- initial bid
- identifying venues
- building an initial budget
- getting deals with hotels & caterers
- finding party locations for social events
- The bulk of practical preparation and organizing on the ground;
volunteers, venue, and social events
We are not responsible for fundraising, program, sponsors, registration,
PR, video recording or website.
If there are areas we think the Chapter should handle we can push back. As
and old friend said, this is all cast in jello.
By now you are probably wondering what a winning bid looks like. Take a
look at Portland for 2012
<https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/State_Of_The_Map_U.S._2012/BIDS/Portland>.
Looking
at Portland Bid, here are the areas we can divide up to tackle the bid as a
group.
- Good writers to craft the wiki
- Describe the city
- OpenStreetMap and Open Source GIS in Seattle
- Entertainment/tourist activities
- Organizing Team
- Venue
- Travel Costs
- Public Transportation in Seattle (Can we get a deal from Car2Go?)
- Budget
What I'm looking for from you to let me know which area you'd like to work
on. Some of you might be going to FOSS4G in Portland (I'm so jealous)
hopefully you'll have a chance to talk to the organizers to get a feel for
what we should be doing to make a successful conference.
Thanks,
Clifford

Folks,
Below is some more information about the OpenStreetMap's formal call for
bids, As per my earlier forward, OpenStreetMap Seattle is planning to make
a bid. If you are interested, I would follow Clifford's suggestion to get
an id on wiki.openstreetmap.org . I plan to participate in that process,
but I will need to delay until later in Labor Day week due to visitors.
The next Seattle OpenStreetMap event is an Mapping-what-you-know Party,
http://www.meetup.com/OpenStreetMap-Seattle/events/202744832/, on Saturday,
2014-09-06 @11:00am. As the co-organizer noted, "Clifford is planning a
Seattle bid for the 2015 State-of-the-Map US Conference. With the number of
active FOSS/GIS people in this area, we could pull this off. We'll be
discussing it, so bring your ideas!"

The formal call for bids from the US Chapter of OSM was just announced. You
can read it at http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/State_Of_The_Map_U.S._2015
I'll create an rough outline of our bid on the wiki. Once it's done I'll
get a note out to everyone. Please feel free to get a id on
wiki.openstreetmap.org to be able to help edit our bid.
Thanks,
Clifford

Hi all,
So far we have about 6 board volunteers for Cascadia that I know about.
Would anyone else like to volunteer, particularly those in British Columbia
and Oregon where we could use more board representation?
