1) I am coming to Vancouver end of April and am hoping we can arrange a get together. Wondering what time and which day would be best ( I am thinking the 27th in the evening ). Also where should we meet? Depending on how many people who are interested we could either meet in a class room at UBC or at a restaurant.
2) Membership drive: As we are now officially incorporated and hopefully will soon be an official chapter we need to prepare for our launch and a membership drive. 1600 Wiki editors list themselves as Canadians here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Canadian_Wikipedians A 150 have added themselves on meta http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Canada/Participants
WRT the process Alan Walker is working on a website which will take online registration. We have been thinking a nominal fee of $ 5 or 10 dollars to cover mailing and stationary costs plus some web hosting. We are in the process of setting up a bank account for Wiki Canada. This will take another couple weeks yet as the bank needs to mail the paper work out to the directors. Thus official registration will not begin until after this is accomplished.
3) First major project: I have been thinking that our first major project should be attempting to get Wiki student / staff groups going at Universities. Do others have interest in this? Other suggestions for initial projects?
Hi
April 27th in the evening is fine for me. I would prefer to meet at a room in UBC - restaurants are usually quite noisy and can be very distracting.
As far as membership costs I think 5-10 is a bit too low. I don't think asking 25-35 is too much to ask. We will need to recover other start up expenses - incorporation fees, annual filing fees (if there are any).
I think your suggestion for our first project is a practical one.

In reference to the annual member fees, I'm in agreement with Zana but for different reasons. The next year or so will be quite an administrative effort as Wiki Canada applies for chapter recognition, sets up projects and gets charitable status. The directors of the corporation will need support from the member community for this. As reluctant as I am to use the "money talks" adage, a decent membership fee will ensure that the member is somewhat vested in the organization.
The downside to this is that students get screwed over. Maybe we could setup a two-tiered system - regular voting members and non-voting student "observers".
Thoughts anyone?

Not just students, but also poor people...."ability to pay/invest" is not always an easy thing....a lot of people spend time on Wikipedia because they DON'T have jobs/incomes....students on the other hand aren't always poor....

There was some proposals with respect to two-tiered systems before. I think this adds un-needed complexity and divides the community.
Much better would be crystal clear goals and objectives that WM Canada will be working towards, and a nominal fee to be able to vote for the "board".
It's better to solicit for a worthy cause, like the WMF does, in my opinion. Small fee for membership, but donate what you can to see {some noble goal} achieved.

I think it's WP:Rewards that may address that, partly - saw it on a link
off Jimbo's user page or something related....

As you may gather, I have no money I can contribute and even a small membership fee is a bit of a hardship in my current circumstance, but - given a good charter and good projects - I may well be able to recruit donations from non-Wikipedians familiar with my work, or otherwise interested/supportive.....
for context, and not meaning to whine, only a a staatement of fact, through much of my last few busy years editing, I have been near-homeless, at times homeless, and/or living in substandard accommodations and otherwise just getting by....this is disability-related and from related disemployment; the devil finds work for idle hands, and my hands have not been idle, as some of you know well. i'm pretty much full-time for long bouts of time, to the degree that I don't get out and look for work (which is of limited options to me anyway) partly BECAUSE I've enmired myself in Wikipedia....such is wiki-addiction; but wikipedia has also been a way to keep my mind from going to seed, although of course it can still go 'round in cirlces ;-)
I"m also interested in seeing more advancement of the OTHER wiki-arenas, not just Wikipedia; I've mentioned WikiTravel already, WikiNews also could use a good Canadian contingent but is seriously staff-limited; making it easier and quicker and more accessible to non-wikipedians could result in a new, independent, news service in Canada, which is much-needed; but right now they only have, as i recall, eight article reviewers, meaning taht the time between someone submits something and when it passes review to get published it's rarely any longer "news".....I'd also be curious about what marketing/packaging efforts there are for the saleable aspects of WikiMedia technologies, e.g. private wikis, corporate wikis, assocation wikis, and what those licensing/costs issues are....

I agree. Keeping it simple should apply whenever possible. It's human nature to seek to be in the cheaper tier, but I would never want the headache of deciding on false claims.

Wikimedia Australia allows half price membership for concession card holders, who have all the 'rights' as members who pay the full amount. We don't police this, assuming an honour system will suffice. I think this has worked quite well. Our rules are written so that the committee can change the membership dues by a vote.

Maybe I missed an e-mail to the list, but I haven't heard that we got an official response from the Government.
Let me say, Congratulations to all who have made this possible! There have been many iterations to get from a few people with the idea to form WM Canada until now, when we actually have a legal entity.

This was bantered back and forth years ago, if I recall correctly. I don't remember what the consensus was at the time, but my feeling is "less is better".
Is there a link somewhere to the official Incorp stuff, and the structure that we will be adhering to?
Thanks, Gerald.

I agree totally, partly so that they learn the ropes of WP:CITE, WP:NPOV,
WP:OR/VS, WP:COI and MOS and so on (so that we're not always picking up after emergent editors....)
Another suggestion, which I've pondered here in the Okanagan, though moving Coast-wise soon, is seminars for museums, tourist boards/CoC's etc on proper article format, NPOV, no-SPAM and so on....quite a few times tourism-board specific SPAs have shown up, e.g. User:Tourism Ucluelet and it's frustrating to know that they have useful information (not always correct, as with the Okangan wine region bunch)....have always wanted to see a "this information is welcome on WikiTravel, but not suitable for Wikipedia" for tourism-directory kinds of input, and "peacock" language, likewise the general brochure-y tone of many town/place artices.....

In many countries there is an active relationship between the Chapter and the GLAM (Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums) sector. Co-operation with the tourism industry would also be useful, but we don't want to be seen as telling them what to do. Rather than giving them the Wikipedia-101 lecture, it might be preferable for our volunteers to work hands on with them to help with such things as preparing brochures.

According to James Owen's message to this list last November[1] there are no plans. She would have been available for a meet-up mid-day to afternoon Feb 6. Unfortunate, as I'd hoped to be attend.

Actually Andrew, I think you forgot to CC James, so I'm doing it now :-)
Recapping: I think James (Owen) wrote this list to see if anyone here wanted to take charge of organizing a meetup while I'm in Toronto. I don't think he got much/any response, which is fine and to be expected, since Canadian Wikimedians are scattered across the country rather than necessarily being clustered in or near Toronto.
So I think we should do this:
* Toronto-area Wikimedians who might be able to attend, should state any preferences to this list, CCing James. It would be helpful, I think, for James to know whether people prefer day or evening, weekend or weekday, and if they have preferences for neighbourhood. We won't have tons of wiggle room, but we'll likely have some, and we'd try to accommodate people's preferences as much as we can.
* James will figure out a location and date/time, and publish it to this list.
* I'll turn up at the appointed time and place, and spend some time with whoever's able to be there.
It won't be a formal event, just a casual meet-up since I happen to be in town. It'd be great to see anyone who can manage to come :-)
Thanks, Sue

Does anyone have the details regarding Toronto's meetup with Sue Gardner?

According to James Owen's message to this list last November[1] there are no plans. She would have been available for a meet-up mid-day to afternoon Feb 6. Unfortunate, as I'd hoped to be attend.

Hi Sue,

Recapping: I think James (Owen) wrote this list to see if anyone here wanted to take charge of organizing a meetup while I'm in Toronto. I don't think he got much/any response, which is fine and to be expected,
I think I wrote back to him when he posted first (circa Nov/2010), but I did also follow up privately in the past few days.
So I think we should do this:
- Toronto-area Wikimedians who might be able to attend, should state
any preferences to this list, CCing James. It would be helpful, I think, for James to know whether people prefer day or evening, weekend or weekday, and if they have preferences for neighbourhood. We won't have tons of wiggle room, but we'll likely have some, and we'd try to accommodate people's preferences as much as we can.
- James will figure out a location and date/time, and publish it to this
list.
- I'll turn up at the appointed time and place, and spend some time
with whoever's able to be there.
It won't be a formal event, just a casual meet-up since I happen to be in town. It'd be great to see anyone who can manage to come :-)
I'm willing to help James out, and try to get the word out to GTA Wikimedians (those further away are welcome, of course). I think James had penciled in a meeting time and day -- but either you or he could indicate what (if any) the alternatives are.
Thanks, Gerald
Dear Gerald,
Thanks for writing, I must have missed your reply maybe it was filtered with the Canada list which goes to a different inbox.
I would suggest we set up a Wikipage for possible options, originally I was suggesting Sunday afternoon, but I think we can also accommodate Monday . I will also see if it is possible for Wikimedians to attend her speaking engagements at Shulich School of Business on Tuesday, February 8.
More information soon, but if someone would like to set up a Wikipage we can start working on something. A big thing for me will be finding a location, so suggestions on location and possible times that might work will be useful.
James

Dear All,
I added to the Wikipedia talk Page for Toronto meet ups a section for the planning for a February 2011 meet up. Please use the below link to indicate if you are interested to attend, and suggested dates/time, and locations. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:Meetup/Toronto
I would like to find a location early next week so please indicate suggestion by Sunday if possible.
Thanks James
