Hello Bostonians, Prof. Gregory Crane (Head of Classics Department) from Tufts University is looking for a 'Classics' experienced Wikimedian to assist on a new project. The premise of the collaboration is to Wikisource and translatevClassic texts, which will be annotated and interpreted collaboratively to form a 'Wikiedition'. I (finally, yeah, I know) had a meeting with some of the curators from Harvard's Law Library. They're going to send us a list of possible dates that would be good for them as well as a few options for collections to work with. What is this about: Back in January we talked about doing some work writing articles on a special collection of the law library at Harvard. This would entail going in and meeting up with some of their librarians, talking about the collection, doing some work with it, and generally having fun around old things. Faithfully yours, Molly

Dear Bostonians, Those of us from the Boston area met on Saturday at the end of the Wikipedia in Higher Ed summit to discuss how to move forward with outreach to profs and student ambassadors in the region. If you are a professor or student who wants to get involved with the program as it grows over the coming year, there are ways you can get involved over the summer. If you want to help frame the program to improve WP and higher ed, or simply to facilitate your own plans to redecorate the world, we'd love to hear from you as well. Yes, we need to move back in that direction. FabLabs are entirely defined in that way ' as a mechanism for enriching your own life, giving you tools to make your life better, and stepping back tyo see what happens. That is absolutely what I have in mind, I just am blocking on coming up with specific use cases to illustrate that. I spend a lot of time with wikipedians, who spend their 'pesonal enrichment' time doing things that help large arhives and others, so my instinctive use cases are skewed towards what I know they would do with such a lab... Wikipedia in Higher Education Summit

Dear Bostonians, There is a party this Saturday at Simmons College for the first annual Wikipedia in Higher Ed Summit! It's the first such event focused on Wikipedia, and organized by the Wikimedia public policy initiative team. A lot of Wikimedians will be there - from the WMF, our ED Sue Gardner is coming, as is Barry, and Rod Dunican & Frank and everyone involved in the PPI effort. From the Campus Ambassadors, a whole new crop will be there. And the profs and some students who have taken part in the program over the past year have all been invited; most are attending. The event itself tomorrow and Saturday is by invitation, and focused on people who are deeply familiar with PPI and the ambassador program. (If you desperately want to attend let me know.) The party Sat. night is open to local Wikimedians -- with light food, drink, and rumours of dancing. RSVP if you can come. [Liblab] update, possible location, and ideas for lab design.

Location update, DCPL contacts == Katie and I just had a helpful call with Ginnie Cooper, head of the DCPL, and some of her technical and programs staff. Nate, thank you for making that *excellent* introduction; the whole team struck me as efficient, inspired by their work, and deeply knowledgable about the local community and history. I would be thrilled to work with them. They are looking into potential spaces for a lab, and have some ideas; one option would be prominently in the main library, which is right on the Metro. Volunteers are needed to man the lab make this happen; see below. I am still interested in hearing about other possible liblab spaces, in DC or elsewhere -- we will want a list of interested future labs to submit with the final results in September. == II. DPLA statement of intent

I was in DC recently starting on Monday, sadly conflicting with our meetup! (for both OLPC and DPLA meetings - the latter is a national digital library being developed by a consortium of existing libraries and foundations). At the DPLA meeting, I mentioned the idea of a 'librarylab' which was warmly received. and which I hope to develop with a few partners as a proposed piece of future DPLA infrastructure: something that could be set up in any city that is introducing its public and other libraries to new library and collection tools [such as might be part of a DPLA platform]. A demo of such a library lab would be developed in DC. I asked the Wiki Society of DC to consider being a local partner in this demo-project. while all costs will be covered by participating hosts or libraries, we need a partner group based in dc to help coordinate local meetings. The reason to have a dem site in DC is that the next large DPLA event will be hosted in DC in October, when good proposals will be showcased. The specific proposal is below, with some discussion I will elaborate on it online after getting some more initial feedback from would-be users. Wikimedia DC is a partner in this proposal - while we don't have an official entity in Boston it would be great to include the Boston Wikipedian network as well. And I would like to test out some of these ideas with our library colleagues here also... the reason to make the first demo site in DC is that the public presentation of all demos from the summer will again be in DC (in October).
