Hello Bostonians (as well as everyone else on the list),
The article on the 2014 Boston Marathon is a tad short for DYK (which has a
minimum article length of 1500 characters, around 60 more than what the
article has now). The DYK nomination has stalled because of this. If
someone would be kind enough to expand the article, and another person be
kind enough to put it through a DYK review once it's been expanded, I would
then be able to place the hook in a prep area on the appropriate date so
that the article appears on the main page during the marathon. (I can't do
the expansion or the review if *and* also move it to prep, which is why I'm
asking here).

Thanks in advance,

Hey everyone,
Just wanted you to be aware of the following upcoming Wikipedia events in
Massachusetts over the next month. Hope to see you all at our
organizational meeting on the 19th!
**Wed, April 16**
Law edit-a-thon at Harvard Law
School<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/Boston/HLS_edit-a-thon>,
Cambridge, MA. The organizers, Kendra Albert and Sam Feldman, are
requesting a facilitator (interest in law topics ideal but by no means
necessary): "We'd love to have some members of the local Wikimedia
community attend and help guide us, and if this edit-a-thon is successful,
we'd love to make a semi-regular event." If you'd be up for volunteering,
please contact Kendra at kalbert(a)cyber.law.harvard.edu or Sam via his talk
page <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Hallmark>. 2-7PM.
**Sat, April 19**
New England Wikimedians general
meeting<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/Boston/April_2014_meeting>,
Cambridge, MA. Agenda: Meet-and-greet for all new and returning members;
Brief recap of local WP events held so far this yr (will also include a
report from Berlin Wikimedia mtg, to which we are sending representatives);
Attendees recount any interesting Wiki projects that they are proud to have
worked on recently; Brainstorm spring events such as a potential trip to
Cape Cod for a photobombing expedition for Commons and a trip to
WikiConference USA in NYC; Brainstorm ideas for NE Wikimedians swag.
(T-shirt, buttons, etc.); Any other business you would like to bring up.
1-3PM.
**Sat, May 3**
Native American & Chinese Art edit-a-thon at the Peabody Essex
Museum<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/Peabody_Essex_Museum_Edit-a-…>,
Salem, MA. "Come and join the Peabody Essex
Museum<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peabody_Essex_Museum>(PEM) for
our very first Wikipedia edit-a-thon! PEM is committed to making
information about its collections available to a global audience. At this
first edit-a-thon, we'll be editing Wikipedia articles and uploading images
on our Native American and Asian collections using the resources and
expertise provided by the PEM curators and staff." 9AM-5PM.
cheers,
Maia

Here's a fine WiR job focusing on using the Houghton special collections.
3 months @ 15 hr/wk, $16/hr

If you're looking for an excuse to come spend three months in Boston,
this may be a great opportunity. For whoever ends up there: this is a
beautiful library to work in.

Mailman! Everyone who has ever had an awkward mailman experience
should consider attending.

Subject: [Acetarium] 3/21 SpinachCon, a user feedback event!
To: social(a)lists.acetarium.com, revolt(a)rhydd.org
Small-to-midsize free software projects don't get enough
user-experience feedback. Coders can't see their own "teeth" so they
need your help.
When: March 21st, noon-5pm
Where: Industry Lab, 388 Norfolk St in Cambridge
Who: Anyone who wants to help improve free software -- no experience neccessary!
SpinachCon is a five hour open house where users will come by and do a
few tasks with up to four different projects. Help us improve
LibreOffice, Mailman, Inkscape and MediaGoblin. Lunch will be provided
near the beginning of the event, but stickers and the warm fuzzy
feeling of providing much needed feedback will be happening all day!
More background: https://www.fsf.org/blogs/community/the-0th-spinachcon

Hey all,
I received a request today from Bill Densmore to upgrade a page to a new server and interface, and I was wondering if anyone would be interested in responding to the request. More information can be found on his posting, here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Ktr101#Seeking_help_with_upgrading_… Also if anyone wants to contact him directly for more information, I have cc’d him on this e-mail.
In other news, we have also secured a time for our April meeting, and it will be occurring on Saturday April 19th, and we will confirm a time and location at a later date.
Have a great week!
Kevin Rutherford
Hi again peeps,
There is a great project afoot in which a series of edit-a-thons will take
place in cities throughout North America on Saturday, February 1st. The
theme is art + feminism. Here is the combined event page:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/ArtAndFeminism
I would love to get something going on this for the Boston area. Would
anyone be willing to take the reins on organizing it? You would need to:
Find and confirm a location; set the time; be there for the duration of the
event; be the point-person for any inquiries. We can recruit for it at the
Jan 18th party, but I think we should have figured out logistics before
then.
NB: I will be more than happy to attend the event and help present and/or
tutor newbies. If I can find a committed host, I will also work with you to
add the event to various Wiki pages + our Meetup.com group. I just don't
have time to organize a full thing from scratch.
Ping me if this sounds interesting.

Hello fellow Wikimedians!
Please join us for a year-end celebration and 2014 kickoff party and
planning session at MIT on Saturday, January 18th. As Kevin mentioned in a
previous email, this party/meeting is open everyone in greater New England.
In fact, if you haven't been to a Boston meeting before, we highly
recommend you attend this one. The start time is tentatively set at 3pm,
with an optional dinner afterward.
Please RSVP on Meetup and/or on our Wiki event page, both of which have
full details:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/Boston/End_of_2013_Celebrati…http://www.meetup.com/wikipedia-5/events/139040902/
At the meeting we will hear from organizers of the various edit-a-thons and
other events in our area this year, and we will look ahead to what we hope
to accomplish in 2014. If anyone has any ideas about where they want the
chapter to go and what they want to do in the future, that is the time to
voice them. Please let us know if you prefer to check in remotely; we will
try to have a Google hangout or similar for those who cannot be there in
person.
cheers,
Maia (user:Girona7)
