Hello everybody,
Yours truly has been invited to help out as public policy liaison to the Programme Committee of Wikimania Esino Lario.[1]
This means that, apart from looking for the best possible speaker to give a "digest" presentation on the topic of internet censorship, I need to figure out what you would like to focus on next year.
We do now have our BIG 5 [2] and want to dig into the censorship area, but what else? More copyright or is it getting boring? Which other topics need to be scheduled? Just presentations or more specific workshops and skill-sharing exercises? Any speakers you really, really want us to invite?
Please think about it and let me know what you think we should hear and learn next year.
Best, Dimi

Hi Dimitar,
I would love to see some conversations about the Sustainable Development Goals being adopted by the UN this week. We have a lot of opportunities to partner with like-minded organizations around the information dessimination goals [1].
I have connections within IFLA, that worked on the Lyon Declaration http://www.lyondeclaration.org/ , and the Wikipedia Library is reaching out to them to work on creating a framework for libraries to engage with the movement. I would love to see talks (or invites) for similar organizations that are working on the international scale for implementing SDGs or are helping create policy frameworks that move the international community in that direction and could be good movement partners.
Cheers,
Alex Stinson Project Manager The Wikipedia Library
[1] Wikimedia and other communities disseminating information/knowledge have clear opportunities around the soon-to-be-adopted post-2015 Sustainable Development Goals recently published by the UN (see them here https://sustainabledevelopment.un.org/content/documents/7891TRANSFORMING%20OUR%20WORLD.pdf). Here are the goals that are most aligned with Wikimedia activities:
-
4.7 By 2030, ensure that all learners acquire the knowledge and skills needed to promote sustainable development, including, among others, through education for sustainable development and sustainable lifestyles, human rights, gender equality, promotion of a culture of peace and non-violence, global citizenship and appreciation of cultural diversity and of culture’s contribution to sustainable development -
5.b Enhance the use of enabling technology, in particular information and communications technology, to promote the empowerment of women
-
9.c Significantly increase access to information and communications technology and strive to provide universal and affordable access to the Internet in least developed countries by 2020 -
12.8 By 2030, ensure that people everywhere have the relevant information and awareness for sustainable development and lifestyles in harmony with nature -
16.10 Ensure public access to information and protect fundamental freedoms, in accordance with national legislation and international agreements

Hello everyone,
(I think that this is my first email to the list, so a quick intro: my name is Alek, I’m Public Lead of CC Poland, I run a Polish organisation called Centrum Cyfrowe - where we do copyright and PSI reuse policy, and I’m a member of the Admin Council of Communia, the European Association for the Digital Public Domain)
I think that copyright is not yet boring, and this and next year exceptions and limitation will, and should be, a big subject. we should endeavour to think big about how they should work, and make an effort to have them as prominent as possible in the reform that should be launched later this year. I also think that there’s a big subject about how open licensing / open policies and copyright law (L&Es in particular) work together. this is a question of overlapping / possibly conflicting policies. it’s also a practical matter of making people who are aware about open also interested in copyright reform issues (Dimi, your work on FoP is a good example of such approach).
all the best,
Alek
