That's right, it was a bugfix. The namespace prefix stripping behavior was never documented anywhere, and caused the inability to search for prefixes like Talk: (which is useful in non-main namespaces, since [[Category:Talk:Foo]] is a perfectly legal title, although probably a mistake), which was filed as bug 16225 [1].
