Long answer: A considerable amount of code has been developed in two
separate branches of the API that does successfully enable editing.
However, this code requires a substantial number of changes to the core
MediaWiki code that cannot be implemented until very thorough testing is
done. At present only very few people have even played with the
implementations, let alone performed comprehensive compatibility testing
or developed unit tests for the editing code. I know of no exact
roll-out schedule that we have, but I would expect to see editing via
the API available by the 1.12 release, and possibly as early as one or
two months from now in 1.12a (on Wikimedia wikis, in other words).
Actually,
I'm merging the apiedit branch with trunk right now, albeit in
small steps. So at least my code (the apiedit branch) should definitely
be in 1.12
If you're interested in experimenting with the
edit functionality of the
API, you might have a look at the Vodafone ApiEdit branch [1] where most
of the development has taken place.
No intention to brag, but most of the development has actually taken
place in the apiedit branch [1], although the Vodafone branch implements
the more 'popular' stuff (edit, createuser, upload) while apiedit does
pretty much everything else.
