Hello,
You’re invited to make our images more accessible and discoverable:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Image_Description_Week
Images on Wikipedia are used for more than just illustration, but less than
half of them are contextualized by a caption that relates the image to the
article, and only 10% have some form of alternative text (‘alt text’) that
describes the visual content of the image for people with low or no
vision. Our lack of image description not only limits the accessibility of
content on Wikipedia, it also reduces the ease with which our open access
images can be discovered through search.
*Tuesday*
- Miriam Redi will share her first impressions of the Wikipedia
Image/Caption Matching Challenge [1]
- Sandra Fauconnier will demo five easy tools to improve descriptions of
images on Commons
*Wednesday*
Michael Raish will share an evaluation of captions written as a newcomer
task [2]
*Thursday*
- Sudhanshu Gautam will introduce the Wikistories pilot [3] and invite you
to create your own image-led stories on the Beta Cluster
- Florence Devouard will describe the life of an image after it's uploaded
to Commons
- Sandra Fauconnier will show beginners how to use OpenRefine [4] to
describe batches of images on Commons
We hope you'll be inspired to include more image description in your own
contributions and campaigns.
Fiona

Hello fellow Wikimedians, librarians, bibliophiles, and information
enthusiasts,
The May round of the 2022 1Lib1Ref <https://1lib1ref.org/> starts just
tomorrow 15 May 2022 and will run until 5th June 2022. Are you going to be
joining us to improve the reliability of Wikipedia's content for the
billions of readers who rely on Wikipedia as a source of information?
In the past year or so we have been piloting different modes of
participation in the campaign. In May 2021 we encouraged adding sources on
Wikidata, in January 2022 we improved on that, added opportunities to
create Wikidata items related to works on Wikisource, and added 9 new
languages from the CEE on citation hunt
<https://citationhunt.toolforge.org/en?id=3c84e6ae>. We are
encouraging the addition
of references to decrease gender bias on Wikipedia
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/The_Wikipedia_Library/1Lib1Ref/Participate#…>
and 12 new languages from Africa, and Asia in the upcoming May round.
If you are already familiar with the campaign or editing on Wikipedia and
would like to experiment a bit, we invite you to try our new contribution
methods for advanced contributors
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/The_Wikipedia_Library/1Lib1Ref/Participate#…>
in the May 2022 round.
If you are an organizer, remember to add your local event(s) to the campaign
dashboard
<https://outreachdashboard.wmflabs.org/campaigns/1lib1ref_may_2022/overview>,
so we can learn and track activities happening across the world. Read more
about the campaign at the blog post on Diff
<https://diff.wikimedia.org/2022/05/11/the-may-round-for-1lib1ref-is-back-wi…>
.
Join us to improve the reliability of Wikipedia articles one source at a
time!

Hi!
The Wikipedia Library has new collections now available to experienced
Wikimedia contributors at https://wikipedialibrary.wmflabs.org/:
* Wiley (journals, books, and research resources, covering life, health,
social, and physical sciences):
https://wikipedialibrary.wmflabs.org/partners/128/
* OECD (iLibrary, Data, and Multimedia published by the Organisation for
Economic Cooperation and Development):
https://wikipedialibrary.wmflabs.org/partners/125/
* SPIE Digital Library (journals and eBooks on optics and photonics applied
research): https://wikipedialibrary.wmflabs.org/partners/129/
Many other sources are already available, including collections which
recently became accessible to all eligible editors: Cambridge University
Press, BMJ, AAAS, Érudit and more. Do better research and help expand the
use of high quality references across Wikipedia projects: log in today!

Hi everyone,
The annual *#1Lib1Ref* campaign is inviting librarians, researchers, book
lovers, wikimedians, and any other knowledge enthusiasts to add missing
references to articles, in order to make Wikipedia (and, as a consequence,
all other Wikimedia projects) more reliable, complete, and useful!
The May edition of the 2022 #1Lib1Ref campaign will happen from May 15th to
June 5th and is an opportunity for people in the southern hemisphere
(Africa, Asia, Latin America & Oceania) to participate.
This year we are experimenting with new contribution methods and expanding
the languages on Citation Hunt <https://citationhunt.toolforge.org/>.
During the January campaign, we encouraged contributions on Wikisource and
Wikidata and added 9 new languages from CEE. In this round, we are hoping
to add a new contribution method focused on thematic or topical
contributions (for example: adding references written by people who
identify as women) and adding some more languages from Africa, Asia, and
Latin America. We will keep you updated on how things shape up!
Are you excited about the May edition of #1Lib1Ref? Do you have any ideas
or suggestions on how to invite more people to participate? Would you like
to help organize and promote the campaign in your communities? If your
answer is “yes” to any of the previous questions, you can share your
thoughts with the 1Lib1Ref community via the Libraries (
libraries(a)lists.wikimedia.org) and 1Lib1Ref mailing list (
1lib1ref(a)lists.wikimedia.org), by joining the Wikimedia + Libraries User
Group <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_and_Libraries_User_Group>
on Facebook or by reaching out directly to me at gfontenelle(a)wikimedia.org.
If you're planning to organize an event, join the campaign on Outreach
Dashboard:
https://outreachdashboard.wmflabs.org/campaigns/1lib1ref_may_2022/overview. And
don’t forget to check the Meta-Wiki page for more information:
