Earlier this afternoon we apparently filled up our quota of tickets for
GLAM-Wiki; if you try and register on eventbrite, you'll be told we're sold
out.

I am fairly sure we are not actually full and we will be able to release
more tickets, but it'll take us a couple of days to sort out - both
tomorrow and Monday are public holidays here in the UK, so most of the
organisers have already gone on holiday, and we won't be able to check
numbers with the venue until Tuesday at the earliest. I recommend you sign
up on the waitlist and we'll notify you when tickets are available again.
If you have already made arrangements to come to GLAM-Wiki (or you're a
speaker...) but have not yet registered, please don't panic! Drop me an
email and I'll make sure it's sorted out.

Do you want to learn how your library can harness Wikipedia to improve
discoverability of library resources, including materials in special
collections and archives? Have you always wanted to contribute to Wikipedia
but aren't sure how to get started? Have you tried to edit but haven't had
a good experience? Do you need tips on how to teach information literacy
with Wikipedia, or had faculty ask about teaching with it? Do you simply
want to learn more about using and contributing to the largest and
most-used reference work in human history?
On April 10th, just before the ACRL 2013 kickoff, you are invited to
attend: “Libraries in the age of Wikipedia: Understanding & Contributing to
Wikipedia,” a hands-on workshop that will provide an introduction and
general overview of how librarians can begin editing and contributing to
Wikipedia. The workshop is open to all and includes refreshments. ACRL
registration is not required to attend the workshop.
Three librarians who are expert Wikipedians will give an overview of the
project, guide participants through a hands-on editing session, talk about
the relationship between libraries and Wikipedia, and answer questions.

Hi all, and apologies for crossposting -
We've been pushing ahead with the last stages of planning for the
GLAM-Wiki conference these past couple of weeks, and I thought I'd
send around a reminder that it'll be four weeks from now!
The conference will be looking at the work done by Wikimedians working
with cultural organisations over recent years, and highlighting the
prospects for future cooperation. It will involve a series of talks
and reports (Friday), workshops (Saturday), and an
unconference\hackathon run by THATcamp (Sunday).
The conference is hosted by the British Library in London from 12-14
April, and organised by Wikimedia UK with support from Wikimedia
Sweden and Europeana. Speakers include Michael Edson (Smithsonian),
Lizzy Jongma (Rijksmuseum), and Nick Poole (Collections Trust), as
well as twenty or thirty others from inside and outside the Wikimedia

Hi folks,
I just want to notify you about an Individual Engagement Grant I have
proposed about furthering a project called The Wikipedia Library. The idea
is simple: to arrange for the community's most active and experienced
editors to have free, full, and convenient access to the best available
academic, scholarly, and subject-specific resources through a single
website. To date, the community has arranged four partnerships with
library partners (Credo, HighBeam, Questia, and JSTOR). Individually
purchased, that account access would have been several hundreds of
thousands of dollars. Hopefully we can increase that total, our partners,
and continue to improve the management of the program with a dedicated
grant:

There is no one place that serves as a central promotion spot. As with
social media, you have to get into various places to promote your event.
Don't forget to add your event to this year's Wikipedia Loves Libraries
list:

- Presumably the people in the local Wikimedia chapter are apprised of
the event and will come.
- Make sure the library and UNC will promote the event (widely) - don't
forget the campus newspaper
- Social media: Twitter, Facebook, and the usual suspects
- There must be local venues/outlets (newspapers? websites? community
centers?) that cater to the African American community in Chapel Hill and
environs -- use them.
- I note the date is April 16 - might you want a tie-in to Lincoln?
In short, as with social media, there is no "one size fits all" and you
have to reach out in many ways (often) to promote your event.
