Successful short educational videos

I've been surprised by the success of this 7 min animation on Dewey codes, from the Finnish libraries (kirjastokaista.fi): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tF342znnAsM It's been on the front page of YouTube in Finland for several days now, even as top 1 trending video. It reached 200k views and counting. As far as I know, no "serious" video on Wikipedia or other Wikimedia projects has reached such a virality. (Although I see a Stephen Colbert and an alltime10s video with 1M views each.) Maybe we can learn something from it? The video is part of a series by this Tuomas Toivainen: http://www.kirjastokaista.fi/kallen-ja-keijon-kirjastoluokat-animaatiot/ https://fi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tuomas_Toivainen Federico

New GLAM and Underrepresented Heritage role at the Wikimedia Foundation
by Alex Stinson 11 Jul '18

11 Jul '18

Hi All, I am really excited to share with you the opening of a new job working within the Programs Team at the Wikimedia Foundation: a Program Officer focused on GLAM and Underrepresented Heritage. As part of orienting our team to better support the Wikimedia Movement direction, we hope this role can help us to better support tactics and strategies that are becoming important among emerging communities wanting to get involved in GLAM programs -- including, for example, leveraging digitization, WikiSource and Wiki Loves type events to document marginalized knowledge. They will be working closely with our existing GLAM team, including Alex Stinson and Sandra Fauconnier, to document and expand the impact of GLAM partnership in the movement, and to help us advance the larger Equity and Infrastructure goals of the movement direction. We also hope that this role helps our team build increased depth of experience with Wikimedia communities outside of North America and Europe, where existing GLAM communities have a strong community of practice and from which Sandra and Alex (and Ben, the Programs team director) have deep backgrounds. If you know someone who is enthusiastic about or has deep experience facilitating GLAM-Wiki or similar community initiatives, please share the job announcement with them: https://boards.greenhouse.io/wikimedia/jobs/1236692 Cheers, Alex -- Alex Stinson GLAM-Wiki Strategist Wikimedia Foundation Twitter:@glamwiki/@sadads Learn more about how the communities behind Wikipedia, Wikidata and other Wikimedia projects partner with cultural heritage organizations: https://outreach.wikimedia.org/wiki/GLAM

Speaker for Boston Wikipedia event 7/10
by Jenemann, Laura 04 Jul '18

04 Jul '18

Hello Wikipedians, I am helping to organize a Wikipedia edit-a-thon on July 10, 2018 at Boston University Libraries. In anticipation of the upcoming 2018 Wikimania Cape Town conference, our theme for this event will be the Global South: Bridging Knowledge Gaps. We would like to have someone speak or share information on the topic of Wikipedia’s global gaps for no more than 10-15 minutes. If you or someone you know is in the Boston area and interested in giving an informal intro to this topic, let me know. In addition, if you have any links or videos to provide on this topic, feel free to share. Thank you for any assistance you might provide. Structured Data on Commons - community consultation on basic properties for media files
by Sandra Fauconnier 03 Jul '18

03 Jul '18

Hi everyone! This month, we warmly invite you to take part in a community consultation on Wikimedia Commons, to list the basic properties that media files will need for structured data. Some explanation here: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Structured_data/Get_involved/Fee… And you can leave your input on the talk page: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons_talk:Structured_data/Get_involve… Please take a look, as this is an important opportunity to make sure that basic properties for GLAM files will be taken into account! We have already collected some examples of 'GLAM-ish files': a (photographed) 3D object, a map, an engraving, a digitized film, the interior of a building, and a photo related to performing arts - but you are encouraged to add more examples to the mix! For instance, digitized books and manuscripts are not included yet... Thank you - and see you on wiki! :-) Cheers, Sandra ps. For those attending Wikimania and its pre-conference: we will also collect input during the hackathon.

National Archives of India
by Shyamal Lakshminarayanan 03 Jul '18

03 Jul '18

Dear fellow Wiki[p|m]edians/ independent researchers, This is just to bring to your attention that the National Archives of India have made a major advance with digitizing their contents and it presents an opportunity that will be quite exciting for those inclined to research. They are available through http://www.abhilekh-patal.in and require free registration. Many documents are yet to be digitized and there is an option to pay for priority digitization after which the digitized contents become readily available (very similar to the French Digital Library http://gallica.bnf.fr/) Because of the understandable size of the contents and limitations of personnel, it appears that the metadata is often defective or in need of work. The content has been OCR-ed but with serious issues which make discovering relevant content a matter of requiring some search-engine-fu and even pure luck while browsing the contents. We can however improve the ease of discovery of relevant content. What volunteer researchers can do * Search the contents for topics of your interest - if you find something relevant - you can cite it using cite web (a custom wrapper for the Archives may be desirable) * You can add links to the material on the relevant pages - as external links - perhaps future researchers will make a more careful examination and use it for referencing * Include in the edit comment - a suitable #tag - just so that others can find the archival research of colleagues via https://tools.wmflabs.org/hashtags/- for now I have been using #NAI but alternatives can be considered * Some of the files contain interesting attachments or portions - signatures of notable persons - photos or more - to give an example - a file discussing the proscription of a newspaper / magazine for carrying certain content will include a copy of the newspaper / magazine - these can* - if they are identified as being in the public domain* - be extracted and archived - possibly on the Internet Archive <https://www.archive.org> or to Commons <https://commons.wikimedia.org>. (these may however require some web tricks, PDF-hacks, and tools) Partnerships with the National Archives may also be possible in future. Interesting content discoveries and research stories are welcome also on the Facebook group - Open Research India https://www.facebook.com/groups/412404838856872 best wishes Shyamal https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Shyamal/India_resources

Results of Wikimedia + Libraries User Group survey
by Merrilee Proffitt 03 Jul '18

03 Jul '18

Hello Wikimedia and Libraries User Group Community members! Thank you for taking our survey which ran between May 24th and June 30th (we left it open for a few extra days...). We received 84 responses. Results are in order of number of votes (people could choose multiple items). This helps us to see where the energy of the community is. The User Group steering committee will use these poll results to help plan our activities in the coming year. - 57 Engage with libraries in communities with historically low participation in Wikimedia projects - 53 Serve as ambassadors for the idea that Wikimedia work is business as usual in libraries by sharing case studies and communicating the benefits of engaging with Wikimedia - 50 Proactively coordinate outreach to library professionals; arrange for attendance at library conferences and events - 41 Expand campaigns like 1lib1ref, and get librarians more involved in other campaigns such as Wiki Loves Monuments, The 100,000 Challenge, Women in Red, etc. - 32 Explore how to roll out a Wikipedia + Libraries OCLC-style course on a global scale - 31 Help explain and promote The Wikipedia Library - 28 Use social media and email channels to exchange expertise, share resources, and support each other during events (such as edit-a-thons) - 24 Revive Wikipedia Loves Libraries - 22 Relieve anxiety about 'doing Wikipedia wrong' and get people excited to join - 15 Turn 1lib1ref from a campaign into a year-long, 24/7 branch - 0 Engage with libraries in communities with historically low participation in Wikimedia projects (this was on twice as an option) Thank you!
