Hello everyone!
Forwarding the latest message from Keegan:
Multilingual captions are scheduled to go live on Wikimedia Commons today,
Thursday 10 January, between 15:00 and 16:00 UTC. The time window may
change at the last minute, and the team may hold the deployment (or roll it
back) if last minute problems occur. Should that happen I will keep you all
informed, and I'll see you all at the IRC office hour today.

From another list. Of interest to us here as #1lib1ref ramps up!
Any other friendly competitions going on out there?
Merrilee Proffitt
Senior Manager, OCLC Research Library Partnership
Hello, all.
1Lib1Ref is a project to get each librarian to add 1 reference/citation to any Wikipedia article where there's a flag that one is needed.
There is a special drive going on Jan 15 - Feb 5 for this, and some Canadian librarians are organizing a friendly competition among their institutions. Last year, only Quebec institutions were involved but this year we're trying to make it Canada-wide.
See attached for a basic explanation and invitation to join.
Here is more info about the overall drive:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=The_Wikipedia_Library/1Lib1Ref…<https://meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=The_Wikipedia_Library/1Lib1Ref…>
and you can use the Citation Hunt search box to find where citations are needed relating to particular topics that may be of interest to you:
https://tools.wmflabs.org/citationhunt/en?id=0e139d96<https://tools.wmflabs.org/citationhunt/en?id=0e139d96>
If you would like your institution to participate, contact:
Lëa-Kim Châteauneuf, Vice President
Wikimedia Canada, national chapter supporting Wikipedia
lkchateauneuf(a)wikimedia.ca<mailto:lkchateauneuf@wikimedia.ca>
to get a "dashboard" for your institution created associated with this "program" (the program being the competition). Then one of you becomes the institution's admin for adding editors.
Each contributing editor will need to make their own wikipedia account if they don't already have one, and get it added to that dashboard so their edits get counted towards the competition.
For instance, here is the newly created dashboard for UPEI for this competition.

Call for Participation:
LD4 Conference
2019 May 10-11
Boston, Massachusetts, USA
Linked data promises to expose the richness of library collections to the world, and to open up new pathways to knowledge based on previously unlinked data. After a decade of experimentation and pilot projects, what are the next steps to move to large-scale production of linked data? How can the library community learn from and contribute to other communities who are working toward similar goals? The 2019 LD4 Conference, to be held May 10-11 in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, aims to bring practitioners together to collaborate on creating pathways to implementation of linked data in libraries.
The Program Committee invites interested practitioners to apply to participate in this event. We especially encourage applications from participants from groups and regions that are traditionally underrepresented in conferences related to libraries and linked data, as well as applications from early career professionals.
“Participation” can take many forms:
- delivering a presentation on current work
- giving a lightning talk
- leading a hands-on tutorial
- demonstrating a tool
- working on a defined project in collaborative environment
- facilitating a working session
- engaging in an in-depth discussion session
- and more...
The Program Committee will select participants and will design the agenda based on the applications received.
Thanks to the generous support of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, there is no registration fee for this conference, and a limited number of stipends are available to make participation possible for those who would not otherwise be able to attend.
To apply to participate (in any of the ways listed above, including attending and engaging but not presenting or leading) please complete the Application to Participate < https://stanforduniversity.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_3PHrZv1egoVwdJr > (which includes the funding application) by February 1, 2019. The Program Committee will notify applicants of decisions (including funding) by February 28, 2019.
For questions about the LD4 Conference, please contact the conference co-chairs at: ld4conf_chairs(a)googlegroups.com

Subject: [Commons-l] Structured data - file captions coming this week
(January 2019)
To: Wikimedia Commons Discussion List <commons-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Hi all, following up on last month's announcement... [0]
Multilingual file captions will be released this week, on either Wednesday,
9 January or Thursday, 10 January 2019. Captions are a feature to add
short, translatable descriptions to files. Here's some links you might want
to look follow before the release, if you haven't already:
* Read over the help page for using captions - I wrote the page on
mediawiki.org because captions are available for any MediaWiki user, feel
free to host/modify a copy of the page here on Commons. [1]
* Test out using captions on Beta Commons. [2]
* Leave feedback about the test on the captions test talk page, if you have
anything you'd like to say prior to release. [3]
Additionally, there will be an IRC office hour on Thursday, 10 January with
the Structured Data team to talk about file captions, as well as anything
else the community may be interested in. Date/time conversion, as well as a
link to join, are on Meta. [4]
Thanks for your time, I look forward to seeing those who can make it to the
IRC office hour on Thursday. I'll reply to this post once I confirm exactly
what day file captions will be released to Commons.

Hi all,
For 2019, the Wikimedia and Libraries User Group steering committee is
launching a series of Hangouts. You can join your steering committee hosts
to hear what our priorities are for the upcoming year, share what you have
been up to and hear from others.
We will have a focus on #1lib1ref so if you want to find out more or tell
us what your plans are for the upcoming campaign you are most warmly
welcome to join!
We will be having steering committee elections in February so if you are
interested in running for a position (or getting involved in any way) this
is a great way to find out more about what our group has been up to.
2019 crept up on me so I apologize for not getting the word out sooner. Our
first Hangout will be this week, in three different time slots -- pick the
slot that makes the most sense for you. We are trying a variety of times to
accommodate our professional and volunteer colleagues across the globe.
When it is time, join using the appropriate link below:
Wednesday 9am Eastern (14:00 UTC)
<https://hangouts.google.com/hangouts/_/calendar/bXByb2ZmaXR0QGdtYWlsLmNvbQ.…>
- hosted by Sodapopinski7
Wednesday January 9th 3pm Eastern (21:00 UTC)
<https://hangouts.google.com/hangouts/_/calendar/bXByb2ZmaXR0QGdtYWlsLmNvbQ.…>
-
hosted by Merrilee
Thursday January 10th noon Sydney (01:00 UTC)
<https://hangouts.google.com/hangouts/_/calendar/bXByb2ZmaXR0QGdtYWlsLmNvbQ.…>
-
hosted by Aliaretiree (this is the same as Wednesday January 9th 8 pm
Eastern)
The Hangouts are a work in progress so we will be experimenting to see what
works. Join us and help make it better!
On behalf of the WLUG Steering Committee,
Merrilee
