I've been surprised by the success of this 7 min animation on Dewey
codes, from the Finnish libraries (kirjastokaista.fi):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tF342znnAsM
It's been on the front page of YouTube in Finland for several days now,
even as top 1 trending video. It reached 200k views and counting.
As far as I know, no "serious" video on Wikipedia or other Wikimedia
projects has reached such a virality. (Although I see a Stephen Colbert
and an alltime10s video with 1M views each.) Maybe we can learn
something from it?
The video is part of a series by this Tuomas Toivainen:

Hi all,
It's that time of year -- the Wikimedia and Libraries User Group Steering
Committee nominations and election season will open on February 4th.
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_and_Libraries_User_Group/Steering…
If you are interested in getting more involved (and can spare 10 or more
hours a month of volunteer time) please nominate yourself. We are
especially seeking more global representation in order to help us reach our
goals. If you have questions about the group, please ask any of us who are
currently serving on the steering committee.
Best,
Merrilee
Dear all,
(and sorry in advance for x-posting -- we are sharing this a bit wider to
draw attention to not only the education group, but also the Libraries and
GLAM groups, which we believe have a lot in common with ours and hope will
be active partners in our work throughout the year)
Below is a report of what we've been up to during 2018, including a few
updates looking forward to 2019. We've tried keeping it short and to the
point.
Best,
Shani.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
** 2018 Report - *
Our group has been recognized during 10/2018, so we don't have much to
report about, but here is a short summary of what we've been up to since
being elected -
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_%26_Education_User_Group/2018_Ann…
** Revamping our User Group Page - *
Check out our (a bit more) updated page on Meta. The work is far from over
and the key areas identified are especially a work in progress and will
keep evolving as we do more work. That said, you can now easily find who we
are, how you can get involved, how governance works, various resources and
a way to contact us, which is a good start.
** Logo - winner - *
As some of you remember, we've ran a logo challenge, in order to determine
what our logo would be. We finally have a winner - a logo that most people
voted for, which was designed by krishna chaitanya velaga (who also happens
to be one of our board members :)). The new logo will be implemented soon!
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wikipedia_and_Education_User_Group_…
** Bylaws -*
We have started working on a draft for our bylaws here (which, once done,
will be moved to Meta) -
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1hsEXVCnLrqC7qcGYXinEZENIDsZIvPnBcInh_bf…
We are looking for people with experience in governance to join the board
as we finalize our bylaws. If you're interested in working on it with us,
please contact us privately.
** Annual plan *-
We've also started working on an annual plan. Again, this is a draft, and
once done, it'll be moved to Meta. In the meantime, we are inviting anyone
who's interested in affecting what we'll be focusing on this coming year,
to comment on the (really not final!) doc -
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1wBR-tAHwpwsCo24tu7mL0QNgUJEebSA18_rbZF8…
** Working groups -*
As part of working on our annual plan, the board has recognized key focus
areas for our work: *Community, Resources & Outreach. *
It was decided to open *working groups* that will be working separately on
advancing each of these focus areas. So what do we want from you?
*Please check out the different working groups
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_%26_Education_User_Group/Get_invo…>
**and sign up* to the group(s) that interest you. We will soon start
working in those groups (also in accordance with the movement strategic
process) and interested users will be contacted directly. Each group will
have a facilitator from the board, and each group will determine its own
annual plan and tendency of meetings throughout the year.
** Monthly Open Online Meetings - *
As of January 2019, we will be conducting open online meetings at *the last
Monday of each month, between 1630-1800 UTC* (that is the time-slot most
people voted for in a doodle poll we conducted). We will send a reminder a
few days before, but this means you can already mark your calendars!
This is *a link to the meetings <https://meet.jit.si/EDUWikiUG> *(at least
for the coming 6 months) and a *the minutes from the meeting
<https://docs.google.com/document/d/1C6jrTGrFIS51L9qGIWXZiLfRBHSNZF8vKcO1uST…>
*(which
we'll also be using for the coming 6 months). We are hoping to record our
next meetings for those who cannot attend.
In addition, in every coming meeting *we will feature 3 stories* of
initiatives from around the world. I*f you'd like to be featured* in one of
the coming meeting, please *contact me privately*.
*Finally,* we realize that while all of this makes perfect sense to us, it
might not be so clear to others, *so p**lease feel free to ask us anything
at all*. We are really looking to involve as many people from around the
world as possible in order to achieve our goals. In other words, we do not
want to rely only on the board to develop these key areas for the global
community; rather it is hoped that board members will take more of a
facilitator role, especially as our network strengthens and our
organization evolves.
Looking forward to working with as many of you in the coming year!
Shani and the Wikipedia & Education User Group Board.

**Deadline extended to February 8**
LD4 Conference on Linked Data in Libraries: Call for Participation
2019 May 10-11
Boston, Massachusetts, USA
Linked data promises to expose the richness of library collections to the world, and to open up new pathways to knowledge based on previously unlinked data. After a decade of experimentation and pilot projects, what are the next steps to move to large-scale production of linked data? How can the library community learn from and contribute to other communities who are working toward similar goals? The 2019 LD4 Conference, to be held May 10-11 in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, aims to bring practitioners together to collaborate on creating pathways to implementation of linked data in libraries.
The Program Committee seeks participation that will bring diverse and broad perspectives. We invite both aspiring and experienced practitioners to apply to participate in this event, including:
* librarians working (or aspiring to work with) linked data
* representatives from adjacent cultural heritage spaces including archives and museums
* ontologists and data modelers
* software engineers and user experience professionals interested in library metadata
* open knowledge advocates
* and others who share an interest in implementing linked data in libraries
We especially encourage applications from participants from groups and regions that are traditionally underrepresented in conferences related to libraries and linked data, as well as applications from early career professionals.
Because this is an evolving space with many learners and few who are “experts” in everything that will help to move us forward, this event seeks to engage all attendees as active participants. “Participation” can take many forms:
* delivering a presentation on current work
* giving a lightning talk
* leading a hands-on tutorial
* demonstrating a tool
* working on a defined project in collaborative environment
* facilitating a working session
* engaging in an in-depth discussion session, including helping to shape new learning resources, or meeting with participants with similar skill levels and goals
* and more
The Program Committee will select participants and will design the agenda based on the applications received.
Thanks to the generous support of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, there is no registration fee for this conference, and a limited number of stipends are available to make participation possible for those who would not otherwise be able to attend.
To apply to participate (in any of the ways listed above, including attending and engaging but not presenting or leading) please complete the Application to Participate<https://stanforduniversity.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_3PHrZv1egoVwdJr> (which includes the funding application) by February 8, 2019. The Program Committee will notify applicants of decisions (including funding) by February 28, 2019.
For questions about the LD4 Conference, please contact the conference co-chairs at ld4conf_chairs(a)googlegroups.com

The Wikipedia Library
Dear EDUWiki enthusiasts,
We've just wrapped 2018 and heading toward 2019, about which I'll be
sending a separate email in the coming week, with information about what
we've been up to till now and most importantly, what we're planning next.
In the meantime, however, *we'd like to schedule our next open online
meeting. *
To that end, we've *created a doodle*
<https://doodle.com/poll/id2bmreyqsf7gvh2>, with 3 different options on the
last week of January.
As we are an international group, we've tried to pick different time-slots
during the day.
*Please fill it out by the end of this Friday, 25/01/19, at midnight
*(whichever
time zone you are in). It's important for us to see how many people are
able to participate in the different time slots, as it'll also affect our
future scheduling as well. The final date will be announced Saturday, Jan
26.
The meeting will include:
* A short update (and intro) by participants.
* A short update regarding what we've achieved during 2018.
* A short update on our annual plan & bylaws
* An invitation to the working groups (explanation and call of action)
Yours,

Hi all!
Is anyone doing anything with public domain day and Wikipedia? We are
running an edit-a-thon on Wikipedia Day centered around 1923 books we
digitized here at MIT libraries:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/Boston/Public_Domain_Day_2019
but I am struggling with what kinds of articles to work on or activities to
do.
Any ideas? Is anyone doing something similar in their libraries? I think it
would be fun to go through the Hathitrust 1923 collection, which is now
open, to see what would be good for Wikipedia:
