Subject: Call for Applications - Open Internet for Democracy Leaders Program
To: Jorge Vargas <jvargas(a)wikimedia.org>
Hi Jorge:
I hope this note finds you well! CIPE recently launched the non-residential
fellowship for open internet leaders from the Global South. Can you please
share it with Wikimedia’s network of partners? We’d like to have a diverse
cohort of participants for our inaugural class.
Thank you! Please let me know if you have any questions.
Best,
Maiko
The Center for International Private Enterprise (CIPE)
<https://www.cipe.org/>, the National Democratic Institute (NDI)

Participants will conduct their own research/advocacy related to open
internet/internet freedom issues and will have the opportunity to travel

love to hear from you!
Please also share the below information among your networks. I am happy to
answer any questions you might have.

*Open Internet Leaders Program*
*APPLICATION DEADLINE: April 5, 2018!*
Democracy has always required the free flow of ideas. In the modern age,
this means a free, open internet where all citizens can freely voice their
opinions, share, and debate. Access to an open internet for all is
necessary to strengthen democratic engagement and governance, enable equal
participation in the market economy, and promote social accountability.
The Open Internet for Democracy Leaders Program - a collaboration between
the Center for International Private Enterprise <http://www.cipe.org/>
(CIPE), the National Democratic Institute (NDI) <http://www.ndi.org/>, and
the Center for International Media Assistance (CIMA)
<https://www.cima.ned.org/> - is a nine month non-resident leadership
program that empowers emerging leaders from across the globe to build their
advocacy and organizing skills to protect internet freedom.
Open Internet for Democracy Leaders are a unique cohort of global advocates
from civic organizations, media, and the private sector who are passionate
about protecting and promoting an open internet.
This program is designed to support open internet advocates organizing
for change in their countries while connecting them with new allies around
the world.
*DURATION*
9 Months (estimated May 2018 - January 2019)
*EXPECTATIONS*
Expectations of selected Leaders include:

conducting a social media campaign on the importance of an open internet).
- *Communications/Outreach*
- Produce at least 4 blog posts or articles for OpenInternet.global
<http://openinternet.global>.
- Actively engage in conversations on open internet issues, such as
on Twitter with the program’s OpenNetGlobal account.
- Map the network of in-country and regional groups and individuals
in the open internet community; build relationships and engage with them
regularly; develop joint efforts as possible.
- *Thought Leadership*
- Participate in a week-long Washington, DC-based “design sprint” to
develop the Open Internet for Democracy Playbook, which will serve as a
companion guide to the Democratic Principles for an Open Internet.
- Participate at one international conference related to an open
internet from an internet governance or human rights angle.

Hello, Wikimedians of Iberocoop,
I am writing to let you know that the WMF Community Resources team is
closing one of our smaller funding programs, Travel and Participation
Support (TPS) [1]. *TPS will no longer accept applications as of May 1,
2018.*
Some background: TPS was created in 2011 as a movement outreach program. It
reimburses travel expenses for Wikimedian volunteers who present about
Wikimedia at non-Wikimedia events. Its closure comes as a consequence of
the grants restructure following our 2015 Reimagining Grants consultation.
[2] As we have redesigned our grant programs to better meet the needs of
our stakeholders, we are no longer resourced to support TPS as a separate
program.
*We will continue to* *support travel requests as part of our other grant
programs*, as follows:
*Rapid Grants* will now fund travel requests for non-Wikimedia events from
individuals for up to $2,000 USD, prioritizing applications that include
all of the following:
* Wikimedian presenters who have a special area of expertise in relation to
their target audience (for example, a psychology professor who is sharing
about Wikimedia projects at an academic conference for other psychology
professionals)
* outreach activity with a training component and a plan for online
follow-up providing ongoing mentorship and support (editing training,
editathon, etc.)
* regional travel requests under $2,000 USD
*Rapid Grants* will continue to fund travel expenses for local Wikimedia
events. Learn more here: https://meta.wikimedia.
org/wiki/Grants:Project/Rapid
*Conference and Events Grants* will continue to support travel scholarships
for Wikimedia events. Note that this funding is awarded to conference
organizers who then manage requirements for participants. Requests for more
than $10,000 USD are required to start the application process 6 months
before the date of the proposed event. Learn more here:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Conference
*Wikimania Scholarships* will continue to support travel scholarships for
Wikimania. Learn more here: https://meta.wikimedia.
org/wiki/Grants:TPS/Wikimania_scholars
You can contact me directly if you have any questions.
Warmly,
Katy Love

Hola estimados,
Escribo para contarles que estoy organizando una serie de conversaciones
con la comunidad, llamada "Mujeres en el Movimiento Wikimedia
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Community_Engagement/Women_in_the_Wikimedia…>
".
sumarse y participar! Las conversaciones serán grabadas y estarán
disponibles en nuestro canal de Youtube
<https://www.youtube.com/c/WikimediaLearningandEvaluationCE>.
Saludos,
María
