Echo Dismiss Feature Question

Hi folks, We would appreciate your views on the current version of the Dismiss feature, as described here: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Echo_(Notifications)/Feature_requirements#Dis… This 'Dismiss' tool enables users to turn off notifications categories they don't want to see in the flyout or the all-notifications page, so they don't have to go to the preferences page if they don't want to. If you haven't already, you can test this feature here on MediaWiki: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Special:Notifications Krinkle and a couple other folks have raised concerns about this feature here on Bugzilla: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=46587 What do you think? Is this feature useful to you in its current form? Note that currently it only lets you turn off an entire notification category (instead of just removing individual notifications). In that sense, it is similar to Facebook's 'User Opt-Out' feature, which lets you turn off notifications from an application or group, as described here: https://developers.facebook.com/docs/concepts/notifications/ Would you prefer to have the 'X' button simply close that individual notification? (without the option to turn off all notifications from that category?) Or would you prefer this compromise solution which lets you do both, as proposed earlier by Brandon: Hover over the notification and there's an "(x)" that appears on the right side. Click that and it dismisses the notification but also asks "Do you want to hide all notifications of this kind?" [y/n control] - if "n/cancel", dismiss/hide current element, do nothing else. - if "y" set "hide this type" preference for the user. show message about "you can set your preferences [[here]]" We are debating whether to change the current version of Dismiss before we deploy to en-wiki, or remove it entirely, or try it out in its current form to get more community feedback. The Wikipedia Adventure as a GuidedTour

Ori pointed me to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:The_Wikipedia_Adventure (prototype at http://en.wikipediaadventure.org/). It's basically a game that walks you through becoming a Wikipedia editor. It has its own rough tour library, but it seems like they could use GuidedTour to great effect. The code (http://en.wikipediaadventure.org/w/skins/common/tutorial.js) is under the public domain, so we might be able to use some snippets as well. Today's feature updates from Editor Engagement Experiments

Hi all, This week the "Getting Started" feature by the Editor Engagement Experiments team has been on hold while we work on future designs, data analysis, and Echo notifications to go with it, but we did deploy a few significant updates today... *Account creation and login redesign: *We turned off the experimental implementation of the new account creation interface on English Wikipedia. S Page, Munaf, and the rest of the team have been hard at work prepping a version of both the account creation and login redesign for MediaWiki core, and we need to turn off the previous version to make way. Commits for this are undergoing review, and after they're merged and the next biweekly MediaWiki release happens, you'll be able to test it out and give us feedback on an opt-in basis locally, before it's made the default everywhere. Look for another announcement about that in the coming weeks. :) *Guided tours: *We added GuidedTour to Portuguese Wikipedia, bringing it to a total of about 15 communities where you can build and use tours. *Last but not least: *We removed Extension:LastModified (the experiment with adding a timestamp of the last change, linking to the history). This was an experiment that we decided not to make a permanent feature since it didn't really lead to any gains in active contributors to articles. Opting out of individual Echo notifications

Hi all, I've been playing around with Echo on MediaWiki.org and noticed that in my preferences I can configure a number of different notifications. (See https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-echo) I've also tested the User Right notifications that were just deployed and whilst you receive an email when you have a user right *added *to your account, you don't currently get one when a user right is *removed *from your account. That's probably an oversight, but from what I've been told the option to opt out from any email notifications intentionally isn't available so as to reduce the number of preferences for users to configure. Another justification is that a user is unlikely to have their user rights changed too often, so email traffic should be minimal. This seems reasonable, but for future notifications, how are we going to decide whether something is worth a preference or not? I'm thinking that anything that technically affects your editing, e.g. a notification that you've been blocked or renamed (if Echo supports that in the future) would be something that probably shouldn't be opt-out-able. Can anyone think of any other notifications that should not be opt-out-able (or does anyone think that all notifications should be individually opt-out-able?) -- Thehelpfulone https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Thehelpfulone

Hello everyone, We'd like to give you a quick update on Echo and let you know about today's deployment on MediaWiki.org. The project is coming along nicely, and we keep adding new features every week. Here are some highlights. 1. Today's deployment Benny and Kaldari just deployed a couple new features on MediaWiki.org today: • Dismiss (turn off notification types from the flyout or all-notifications page) • Web Preferences (control which notification types to include on your flyout or all-notifications page) These features are not in their final form yet, but already provide a lot more control over which notifications you receive on the web or via email. Next features Our next Echo deployment is now scheduled for the week of March 4th. Article feedback update: New version on the German Wikipedia!

Hi folks, I am happy to report that we deployed an updated version of Article feedback v5 on the German Wikipedia yesterday, at long last. :) This new version includes these new features: • Better feedback filters • Simpler moderation tools for editors • Separate reader moderation tools • Discuss on talk page / contact post author The release went well and the tools are now being tested by German community members. We will also be releasing this new tool on the English Wikipedia next Tuesday (that release is being delayed so we can complete the feedback data conversion -- as well as disable the 'feedback from watched pages' feature, which is causing database cache issues). Note that AFT will only be enabled on an opt-in basis on the English Wikipedia, as requested by the community in last month's RfC; but many editors have already started to re-enable AFT5 for articles they are watching, and we hope the tool will continue to help them and others improve Wikipedia based on reader feedback in coming months. Our current plan is to complete these three deployments, then monitor activity on the English, French and German Wikipedias in the next couple months and wait for their communities to vote on a wider release. If these pilots are successful, we will consider supporting a few more deployments this summer, for projects that have reached consensus for a wide release of the tool (so far, we've received a variety of requests from the Chinese, Hungarian, Kannada and other Wikipedias, as well as Commons). Hi SJ, Thanks so much for your kind words -- and for your thoughtful recommendations on the English Wikipedia RfC, which were really appreciated ;o) I also forgot to thank one more team member, designer Pau Giner, who streamlined the user interface to make it a lot easier to moderate feedback. Some of the first comments we are getting on the German Wikipedia talk pages have noted this improvement -- and a former critic of the tool just said that "the new system is much better, clearer, faster". Article Feedback Tool and inline comments

While looking through https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Sue_Gardner/Wikimedia_Foundation_Guidi…, it occurred to me that inline comments would be powerful addition to AFT. Basically something like https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stet_%28software%29 integrated into MediaWiki. I think it would help people make useful comments that could more quickly be acted on/resolved.
