Thinking back to the editathon we ran at the time of the last election,
there was quite a long wait until much in the way of new MPs were elected,
and by that time people were tired and/or enthusiasm had waned.
There will be a number of candidates for safe seats for whom we can start
draft pages in anticipation of their election being announced later that
evening/morning. If we could identify such candidates ahead of time, then
editors would have something worthwhile to do whilst we await the actual
constituency results.
By way of example, anticipating a very likely Labour victory in the 2016
Tooting by-election after Sadiq Khan stood down to become mayor, I started
an article on the Labour candidate:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosena_Allin-Khan
An AfD was started the next day, and the article was deleted:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Rosena_Allin-…
After she won, the article was reinstated. If I had just done that article
as a draft, there would have been no need for an AfD.

I'm looking at the feasibility of setting up a temporary office at Newspeak
House in London for the next 6 weeks for people coming together to work on
tech & democracy projects.
It might make sense to do a politics/elections edit-a-thon in the space at
some point(s) in this period. Any interest?

Hello Wikimedians, we are just trying to decide on some designs for T
shirts to order for the next year and I would like to get some feedback
from the community about what kind of designs they would like to see. At
the moment we are just doing Wikimedia UK ones, and I've mocked up a couple
of options, with the logo either in the centre or as a badge. Please tell
me which you prefer, if you'd like to see it in different colours, with a
different logo layout (e.g. with Wikimedia UK to the side of the logo
rather than underneath) or if you have ideas for different designs. All
ideas appreciated.

Dear all
I'm pleased to confirm that this year's Wikimedia UK AGM will be taking
place on *Saturday 15th July* at Senate House Library
<https://wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/2017_AGM/Venue> in London.
The detailed schedule for the day is currently being finalised but we will
start at 10.30am for networking, sharing, strategy discussions and lunch,
with the AGM itself from 2.30 - 4.30pm. Following the AGM there will be a Train
the Trainer networking and refresher event, also in the Library, for
previous participants of Wikimedia UK's Train the Trainer course.
We would encourage you to come and stay for the whole day, particularly if
you are a member and can vote at the AGM, although all volunteers, editors,
partners and potential volunteers and editors are welcome. The registration
page on Eventbrite can be found here
<https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/wikimedia-uk-agm-2017-tickets-34718204083?re…>
-
please note that you will need to register for the AGM and evening Train
the Trainer event separately by selecting the appropriate option(s) from
the drop down menu. There is limited capacity for both, so please ensure
you update your attendance details if you are no longer able to attend.
Any member who wishes to bring forward a resolution for consideration at
the AGM must inform the charity, and supply a copy of the suggested text,
by no later than *Friday 9th June 2017*. The suggested text may either be
sent by email to the chair of the board at michael.maggs(a)wikimedia.org.uk or
may be posted online at
*https://wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/2017_Annual_General_Meeting/Resolutions
<https://wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/2017_Annual_General_Meeting/Resolutions>*
If you have any more general comments or queries, please email Nicola
Furness at nicola.furness(a)wikimedia.org.uk. Nicola and I will be emailing
(and updating the wiki) with further details including the agenda for the
day over the next few weeks.
With all best wishes
Lucy

Subject: Digitisation Grant fund
To: AHFAP(a)jiscmail.ac.uk
Dear all,
*with apologies for cross posting*
I thought list members would be interested to know about the TWA
Digitisation Grant fund, which re-opens today.
The Digitisation Grant is aimed at UK archives (including business
archives), special collections libraries and museums, and offers
funding grants of up to £5000 for institutions to digitise their
collections.
The fund will be accepting applications from today until 7th July and
bids will be judged by a panel composed of:
John Chambers - Chief Executive ARA; Claire Adler - HLF Appointed
Expert Advisor; and Paul Sugden - Senior Digitisation Consultant.
More details and how to apply can be found below:

Best wishes,
Ryan Kyle

There has been quite bit of discussion over the years about how the
Wikimedia movement could engage with those who have research interests
in family history or genealogy, and a centralised discussion page [1]
has been set up on Meta.
I am posting to ask whether there would be Wikimedian developers who
would be interested in joining an open source project to create a free
platform independent application called History Research Environment [2]
(‘HRE’) for the serious genealogist or historical researcher.
Considerable effort has been put into high-level planning over several
years, and we are now ready to start writing code.
While the proposed software is not currently an official Wikimedia
project, if there is enough interest we are open to it becoming
integrated or affiliated in some way. The plan is, in any event, that
the software should be interoperable with Wikidata to allow (subject to
the agreement of the Wikidata community) the exchange of a variety of
structured data including verified and fully sourced family trees.
I'd be happy to answer queries.
