A full set of high resolution OS map scans is being gradually uploaded
to Wikimedia Commons and indexed by historic county. These are very
large files, 10,000 pixels wide, so are both in TIFF and jpeg format
to make reuse easier.
These are of 'specialized' interest, but I would think could be of use
to both Wiki Loves Monuments projects and readers of this email list
interested in early maps and geo-related experiments. The maps show
plenty of fine detail, including inns/pubs, churches, bridges etc.
Those that still exist will be likely to be listed and protected, and
those that are not, may still be great photography subjects. Note that
to view the maps, Commons' in-built ZoomViewer is useful but it
appears to be broken today, so you may have to settle for examining
the full size jpeg in-browser.
As I write this, the uploads are working through "B", so the projects
is going to take several weeks to complete. If there are ideas for how
better to categorize or template these maps, feel free to drop a note
on my Commons talk page. It is always possible to do some post-upload
housekeeping or adjusting the way the uploads are currently getting
formatted.
Thanks,
Fae

I am very pleased to be able to announce the 2017 award winners for Wiki
Loves Monuments in the UK.
First place goes to Matthew Hoser for his image of the derelict West
Pier in Brighton.
In second place was Paul Stümke, who captured the Glenfinnan Viaduct at
Loch Shiel.
Third was Oliver Tookey for the De La Warr Pavilion in Bexhill on Sea.
The special prize for the best image taken in Scotland was awarded to
Keith Proven for Smailholm Tower.
The special prize for the best image taken in Wales went to Sterim64 for
Craig-y-mor.
You can see all of these images, and the other stunning pictures that
were awarded Highly Commended status, at Wikimedia Commons:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2017_in_the…
Many congratulations to our prizewinners, and thanks to all who
volunteered to help make the contest a success: contestants, judges,
reviewers and Wikimedians in many roles. Thanks also for the kind
support we received from the International team, from our friendly staff
at Wikimedia UK, and from our 2017 prize sponsors, Wikimedia UK and
Archaeology Scotland.

S4C have agreed to change their 'Usual You Tube licence' of videos on their 2017 Royal Welsh Show account (and previous years) to CCBYSA. This means we can upload around 2,000 videos to Commons. It also means that S4C, for the first time, have discussed and understood legality and benefits of open licencing, and could produce footage of other subjects.
Link: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCOrGrdJcnGuiCXMc3tCUvnA/videos
I gave them two options:
1. RTS (the simple option)
2. Change licence on You Tube to CC (recommended as it's visible on You Tube).
They say that they have changed the licence (using batch - manual historical), but that it's not visible on any of the videos on You Tube, and the videos don't appear in a Google CC search.
Any help please?
PS In due course we will need to transfer them over to Commons with a pilot patch of 10. Each video will need a 5 second subtitle saying "S4C - Sianel Pedwar Cymru". A project will then take place in order to subtitle the main points in English eg names of species, breeds, farm location. Clips from each video could also be taken, and placed in that breed's Category on Commons, Wikidata etc.
But first - the licence!

I've been thinking of running a Wikimedia organised dinner event at
Newspeak House one Wednesday evening during their normal Ration Club dinner
they have. If I organise the cooking, would anybody in the community like
to come for a free meal, some networking and a nice place to have a drink
and discuss projects? If anybody would like to help with the cooking, that
would be good too. At the moment if anybody who would be interested to
attend would let me know, that would be great. I'm thinking of 1 November
or 8 November. Let me know what you all think of the idea.

I've just heard that the Imperial War Museum is advertising for a volunteer trustee with a job spec that seems to me to be very well suited for a Wikimedian with a MILHIST enthusiasm. If that is you the application is at https://publicappointments.cabinetoffice.gov.uk/appointment/imperial-war-mu…

Dear all
The strategic direction for the Wikimedia movement to 2030 is now final,
and all groups and individuals are invited to endorse it on *Thursday 26th
October*. The Wikimedia UK board will be deciding over the next few weeks
whether or not to endorse the direction as a Chapter (and I will confirm
with you all once this has been agreed), but all individual contributors,
volunteers, members etc can choose whether or not to add their own support:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Strategy/Wikimedia_movement/2017/Direction
The strategy team hope that as many individuals and groups as possible
endorse the strategy in order to show support and commitment to the
direction and to commit to participating in the next phase of the movement
strategy process in good faith. You can do this by signing a meta page with
your Wikimedia username on 26th October.
If anyone has any questions about the process then I can certainly attempt
to answer them from my own perspective, but a lot of information about
what's happened so far and future plans can be found on the strategy meta
pages linked to above.
All best
Lucy
