Hi all,
I was asked by our colleagues at Wikimedia Netherlands to spread the word
about a storyboard writing workshop they are running on March 19th in
Utrecht. It would be run in English.
If anyone finds themselves in the Netherlands at the time, it may be an
interesting event to join. The workshop itself is free, but we do not have
scholarships for travelcosts etc.
You can find information about the workshop here:
https://www.wikimedia.nl/nieuwsbericht/march-19-2016-workshop-storyboard-wr…

Hi All,
This education conference may be of interest, so I'm circulating the
information about registration if anyone is interested in attending.
There will be several Wikimedia-related talks in the programme. I am also
pleased to say that the conference co-chair is the Edinburgh University's
lead on the Wikimedian in Residence project, which has only just started.
To quote from the conference's page:
The vision for the conference is to focus on the value proposition of
embedding open culture in the context of institutional strategies for
learning, teaching and research. The conference will be chaired by Melissa
Highton, Director of Learning, Teaching and Web Services at the University
of Edinburgh, and Lorna Campbell, OER Liaison at the University of
Edinburgh and EDINA Digital Education Manager.
OER16 will focus on:
- The strategic advantage of open and creating a culture of openness.
- Converging and competing cultures of open knowledge, open source,
open content, open practice, open data and open access.
- Hacking, making and sharing.
- The reputational challenges of openwashing.
- Openness and public engagement.
- Innovative approaches to opening up cultural heritage collections
for education.
All the best,
Daria

Financial support for attendance
We have aimed to make our charges for this event reasonable in order to be
as inclusive as possible. However if cost is a genuine barrier we have a
small amount of limited funding that we can use to help subsidise
registrations. If you are presenting a paper or if you are a student, from
a small FE organisation, a school teacher, work in adult and community
education, or are a member of the public with a special interest in OER
wanting to attend, please complete the form below or contact us to discuss
your options. Both national and international applications will be
considered, but please note that it is unlikely that we will be able to
refund travel. Please note the terms and conditions below (including
cancellation charges). Terms and Conditions
- This funding option is specifically available to unfunded projects and
individuals, teaching and support staff and students, members of the public
who are not otherwise supported by an organisation.
- Those working in HEIs and large FE Colleges (400+fte HE equivalent)
are not eligible to apply.
- The funds available to cover registration and accommodation costs are
limited and will be decided by the OER committee, signed off by the
Treasurer, on merit.
- Travel costs must be normally met from elsewhere.
- There is no appeal procedure once a decision has been made.
- You may be required to provide evidence of your circumstances in order
to qualify (e.g student number, line manager's letter, etc).
- Any inaccuracy in the description of your circumstances will lead to
any awards being withdrawn.
- If you are awarded financial help but are unable to attend you must
inform us as soon as possible. 'No-show' places will result in a request
for full payment for attendance being re-instated as this would prevent
another from taking up a funded place
Please click the link below to apply for funding assistance. Closing date
for applications is 6 March 2016: http://go.alt.ac.uk/OER16-Assistance-Form.

Dear all
Many thanks to those of you who were able to make the 15th birthday party
on Saturday, your presence was much appreciated. Photos have now gone up on
Commons, and on our Facebook page here:
https://www.facebook.com/events/975864969140790/permalink/978696188857668/
Also, I thought that some of you might be interested in the media coverage
of the 15th birthday party in the UK, and particularly that which mentioned
Wikimedia UK and featured interviews with volunteers and staff. Martin
Poulter (currently Wikimedian-in-Residence at the Bodleian Libraries) gave
interviews for both Sky News and ITV News, while Robin Owain and Jason
Evans (WMUK Wales Manager and WiR at the National Library of Wales
respectively) spoke on BBC Radio Cymru; our Head of Programmes Daria
Cybulska spoke on the BBC World Service; and I was interviewed by Paul Ross
on BBC London Radio.
There was of course a lot of coverage of Jimmy, who gave a substantial
interview to the Telegraph and was on BBC Breakfast, as well as in other
broadcast and print media. The coverage mainly felt celebratory in feel,
and included some fantastically impressive statistics about Wikipedia
globally, as well as insights into the work of the UK charity.
All best

Dear all
The 2016 Annual General Meeting for Wikimedia UK will be on Saturday 9th
July. As in previous years, we also plan to combine this with an
opportunity to bring people from our community together, in particular the
charity's volunteers and members.
We are starting to think about possible venues for the day and are keen to
look at locations outside London, if we can find somewhere suitable (by
which I mean an accessible venue with good public transport links that we
can ideally have for free or at a subsidised rate!) Birmingham and
Manchester would be obvious choices as they are relatively central, but
other suggestions are welcome, particularly if you are in a position to
help with securing a venue.
Regardless of whether you have any suggestions or preferences regarding the
venue at this point, please put the date in your diaries!
Best wishes
Lucy

Dear all
This is just a quick reminder about the 15th Birthday Party for Wikipedia
that WMUK are holding tomorrow evening:
Saturday 16th January
7.30 - 10.30pm
Newspeak House
133 Bethnal Green Road
London E2 7DG
The nearest station is Shoreditch High Street, just a few minutes away, and
Liverpool Street and Bethnal Green tube stations are pretty much
equidistant - about a 10 - 15 minute walk depending on your stride!
There will be speeches from several people involved in the movement,
including Jimmy Wales, who will also cut the (rather magnificent) cake.
Wine, beer and soft drinks are provided, along with some nibbles.
I hope to see many of you there. There's still time to sign up here:
https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/wikipedias-15th-birthday-
party-tickets-20509187532
Or just let us know you're coming via this mailing list.
Best wishes

Dear all
Here is the link to register on eventbrite for the party on Saturday 16th
January. Do feel free to bring partners/friends but if you're planning to
do so, please book a ticket for them so we have a good idea about numbers.
We're very pleased that Jimmy Wales has confirmed that he can attend.

I mentioned before our thanks to Ed - but spelt his surname wrong! Thanks,
Ed Saperia, for the venue :)

Hi Lucy,
Just a couple of years ago, when the number of employees in the UK was
measured between zero or two, unpaid volunteers like me used to go
along and sit in on and give views in parliamentary discussions, meet
and share ideas with other unpaid volunteer representatives from
advocacy groups such as the Open Knowledge Foundation, Creative
Commons etc. This no longer seems to happen, nor does it seem
expected. It is still the norm for open knowledge groups apart from
WMUK to have unpaid volunteers as their leading advocates and main
points of contact.
Considering that the FDC has already stated that:[1]
A. "The FDC is concerned about very low targets for WMUK’s program work."
B. "The FDC believes that WMUK's advocacy work and work on influencing
policy towards Open Knowledge in the UK and EU has potential."
Would you consider keeping the staff focus firmly on delivering more
ambitious outcomes in programme work, and stepping back from
controlling advocacy work yourself? You could try approaching or
encouraging volunteers, such as the couple of trustees that are seen
at wikimeets, to take responsibility to push our advocacy for open
knowledge forward and enthuse some of their fellow UK Wikimedians.
With volunteers taking an active role, this brings relevance and
urgency to our volunteer groups and restores the organization to one
where the volunteers are central and leading change, rather than
joining projects where employees are the default top of the hierarchy.
In terms of meaningful metrics, if hardly any volunteers are
interested in finding out more or getting directly involved with
suggested political or legislative advocacy even with supporting WMUK
employee time, then it seems a poor strategic choice to just proceed
with that work regardless.
