Would wikimedia UK be interested in me donating my old Canon EOS 5D Mark III
(~42K shutter actuations)?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canon_EOS_5D_Mark_III
Canon specs say it should be good for another 100K shutter actuations.
It has had zero careful owners but best I can tell everything appears
to be working.

Hi all, it was great to talk to some of you yesterday at the London meetup,
and especially the discussion around trying to better organise those
Wikimedians who are also software developers. I think we all agree that
some of the tools people have created to edit and improve Wikipedia,
Commons etc are really useful, but that they aren't very accessible or user
friendly. I think we could make a useful impact if we could organise
developers to put their heads together to work on improving and extending
the vast array of tools that exist already. To this end, I've started a
Slack channel for Wikimedia developers to discuss how we might move forward
with the idea. If you would like to be added to the channel to discuss with
other Wikimedia developers how to take the idea forward and share what you
might already be working on, please reply with your interest and let me
know your email address so I can send you an invite to the channel,

You may have seen the unveiling of the 'Leekfrith Torcs' on the news today.
Clem Rutter started, and I expanded:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leekfrith_torcs
which is currently on en.Wikipedia's Main Page, 'In The News' section.
I'm particularly please that the 9Mb image used was released, promptly
after my request, by Staffordshire County Council. UK local government
bodes such as that one are not usually known for their grasp of open
content and the importance of making such media available under open
licences. I'll be using it a lot, as a case study - with 25 million
main-page views per day, I'm hoping that it will help to change
attitudes in other public bodies!

Dear all
Many thanks to those of you who have inputted into the two policies I
circulated earlier this year for community consultation (about Diversity
and Safeguarding). I'm in the process of revising those draft policies -
according to the suggestions that have been made - for board review in
March.
As I mentioned at the time, I'm updating a number of board-level policies
and would welcome community feedback into the following working documents
by Wednesday 1st March:
Volunteers Policy

Safe Space Policy

Donation and Grants Acceptance Policy
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1UnqR3V9-_mOMacEQo0xzTGn6aY9-HaC3jAC1Lk6…
Please feel free to add comments directly to the document or to email me
with your feedback.
Many thanks

At the WMUK education summit yesterday somebody - I regret that I don't
recall who - mentioned a tool that scrapes a US newspaper for obituaries,
and matches them to Wikipedia articles (or highlights missing Wikipedia
articles).
It was suggested that we might have a UK equivalent.
On checking, I see that the Guardian have an RSS feed for their obituaries:
https://www.theguardian.com/tone/obituaries/rss
Is anyone interested in working on such a tool (or adapting the US one)?

Hi,
You’re invited to a weekend of learning, making, and doing to advance
Open Research Data on March 4 and 5th. The event is hosted by SPARC
and the NIH as part of an international celebration for Open Data Day.
At its heart, Open Research Data is about making it easy for you and
others to see, use and share data. This simple idea is powering some
of the largest breakthroughs of our time and our event aims to
celebrate and accelerate the power of Open Research Data. Whether new
or old to Open Research Data, scholar or citizen, to join us for this
weekend to make, hack, contribute, try, teach, design, test, learn (or
just about anything!) in the name of Open Research Data.
Interested? Learn more and sign up for tickets here.
Hope to see you there,

P.s You're receiving this as you've been to (or registered for) Open
Knowledge London events!
I'm happy to announce that Newnham College will be marking International Women's
Day, 8 March, this year with a Wikipedia editing event:
http://www.newn.cam.ac.uk/event/wikipedia-edit-thon-mark-international-wome…
Everyone is welcome to come, and write on Wikipedia, in a woman's biography.
Please do read what the link has to say about that.
The event will run 12 noon to 8 pm in the Jane Harrison Room, Newnham College.
There are training places, and if that would be your main interest, please note
that training sessions start on the hour, and you need to book a slot for that.
The most popular times are expected to be the initial two hours. If you are able
to help with one-to-one support of editors, please just come along. A number of
trainers will be there, but if also you'd like to be involved in that capacity,
please let me know offlist.
Charles
Dear all
As promised I wanted to follow up about the Daily Mail story last week and
the need for the Chapter to be able to call on volunteers who would feel
comfortable talking to the media on behalf of the community. Thanks to
David Gerard for initiating this discussion on the list.
In the past the charity has offered media training for volunteers, and
whilst we haven't budgeted for this in the current year it's certainly
something to think about again in future. I attended CIPR's Media Handling
and Crisis Communications course earlier this week (with a free place
courtesy of Alastair McCapra) which I found extremely useful. As it
happens, I contacted six or seven people about the Newsnight request last
Thursday, but for various reasons we weren't able to provide a volunteer to
talk to the BBC...In several cases this was because the editor concerned
didn't agree with the decision, and so could potentially defend the process
but not the outcome. There will doubtless always be circumstances in which
a volunteer doesn't want to speak to the media about a particular story, or
is unable to do so because of work, travel, location etc; hence the need
for a 'stable' of people who can do this (sorry, I can't think of a more
appropriate collective noun!)
Either John or I will be in touch with those of you who have a) responded
to David's message about media spokespeople in the past few days or b) are
already on our radar as potential spokespeople, to create an up-to-date
list of names and contact details. Please feel free to add your name to
this list by replying to this message or dropping me and/or John Lubbock an
email.
With thanks and best
Lucy
