There is a lot in the news at the moment about newspapers, etc.
charging people for accessing news on their websites. I wonder if
Wikimedia UK should issue a press release recommending Wikinews as an
alternative. The project could do with some publicity and this might
be a good time to get it some since the subject of news websites is
being discussed. It probably won't be in the news for long, though, so
we would have to move quickly (the release probably needs to go out in
the next 24 hours at the longest).
Oh, sorry for that, thanks for pointing it out, Thomas.

Dear All,
Our initiative, Britain loves Wikipedia is coming. According the plan,
the event will launch at the Victoria and Albert Museum on Sunday, 31
January 2010, followed by a series of events each weekend at museums
or galleries around the UK.
It would be great if members can join this event at many volunteering
point. Currently, there are three entries to join in this event:
1, designing Poster: Poster will be used to advertise this event on
local avenue, college campus and other public areas.
2, designing T-shit: T-shit will be given to volunteers on that day,
which need to be remarkable, and represent our logo.
3, signing for volunteers: in the event date, we need volunteers on
museums to lead people, assist museum staff, even encourage people to
join Wikimedia UK. Please check the date and location from
http://uk.wikimedia.org/wiki/Initiatives/Britain_Loves_Wikipedia, and
sign the event which is suitable for you to attend.
Please do contact Project leader Mike Peel or me for helping any
issues above. All ideas and comments are welcome!
best

Hi all,
Thanks to Kaldari, the photos from the Wiki Loves Art event at the
Victoria and Albert Museum last February are now (finally) online!
You can find them at:
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/
Category:Wikipedia_Loves_Art_at_the_Victoria_and_Albert_Museum
Please help categorize them and add them to articles - the more these
images are used, the stronger our argument to museums in the future
to get them to participate in this sort of event, so we can get even
more photos etc...
Planning for the Britain Loves Wikipedia event next February is
ongoing; we have several museums involved already, and a number of
others that are interested. Please help develop the event on the wiki:
http://uk.wikimedia.org/wiki/Initiatives/Britain_Loves_Wikipedia
Thanks,
Mike
Gah, I only got the mail now due to internet issues. I happen to be in Birmingham tomorrow for unrelated matters, and I would have loved to go along. Oh well.

"The National Archives and the Museums, Libraries and Archives
Council (MLA) welcome the new government policy on archives -
Archives for the 21st Century - which was laid before Parliament today."
Full PDF at:
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/policy/aft21c/
Of particular interest are the recommendations, particularly from our
point of view the 4th one:
"Archives for the 21st Century sets out five key recommendations to
help the sector build the foundations for a more sustainable future
and respond to the challenges of the digital information age:
- Develop bigger and better services in partnership - working towards
increased sustainability within the sector
- Strengthened leadership and a responsive, skilled workforce
- Co-ordinated response to the growing challenge of managing digital
information so that it is accessible now and remains discoverable in
the future
- Comprehensive online access for archive discovery through
catalogues and to digitised archive content by citizens at a time and
place that suits them
- Active participation in cultural and learning partnerships
promoting a sense of identity and place within the community
This policy does not offer a single blueprint for the way forward,
but suggests a range of options that can be applied to short and long
term planning in archives, according to local need and priorities."

We've been invited to a conference in Birmingham this Thursday and are urgently seeking anyone who may be able to go along and is able to speak on Wikimedia's perspective.
The conference is called "Digital Treasures" and is being organised by the museum sector. It's a very important event for us as we're currently developing our links with the museum sector through Britain Loves Wikipedia, the GLAM-WIKI conference and various content release discussions so we need someone who will be able to represent Wikimedia.
It's next Thursday 26th November - the conference is from 10am to 5:30pm and our session is 1:30 - 2:30 pm. Travel costs will of course be paid by the chapter.
Not exactly Italy I know! ;) Please let me know if you're able to help or if not or need any more information, or if you have any ideas for who else could do it.
Cheers

See below. Sounds like a very good opportunity to talk about what
Wikipedia can do to help archives. Is anyone able to go? (I'll go if
no-one else can, but I should really be focusing on my thesis...)
