Not sure if this is the right forum for this, but I hope we could come out of this thread with rough consensus to enable these formats to help increase the reach of audio works.
So this would need a configuration change? If the technical aspects are already clear, the issue should be raised on Commons-l.
Related: especially if new formats are added, it's important to document what formats/codecs/containers work or are recommended, see recent confusion at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help_talk:Converting_video#Some_thoughts.

Worth noting we also recently merged improved firefogg support into upload wizard. https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/#/c/39035/
So our instructions can be simplified a bit. Use firefox, install firefogg ( once ). Now you can upload your mp4 assets directly from your camera files and we will automatically convert them to the best format with the correct settings.

That's great!

The software patent situation for mp3 is sad, considering how long the mp3 format has been around:

But fundamentally Wikimedia is not "distributing" these encoders and there are no royalties for media distribution. Likewise we are not shipping decoders (the decoders are in browser or the mobile OS )
Do any of the MP3-related patents (including ones not owned by Technicolor) cover data storage and/or network streaming per se?
I ask because a casual reading of [1] suggests that Wikimedia would be a non-exempt, 'revenue-generating' entity employing MP3 in a 'content distribution system' and thus subject to a 2% cut of arguably all total revenue.
Is MP2 viable? The patent situation there is not as aggressively enforced.
Sincerely, George
Your system does not seem to support OGG audio format. Downloading this file without ogg support may need a significant amount of space and bandwith. Downloading article.wav ... 20%

Something tells me that won't be feasible for video. :)
