Thanks for bringing this up, Peter.
Just so you know, the filesize limit might change after the full
deployment of the Swift media storage system, and after more hardware
gets prepped in eqiad (a Wikimedia data center). As of February, Swift
now serves out all the photo thumbnails that you see on Wikimedia
Commons, but it's going to take more hardware work and more system
administration work before it's ready to serve out all the multimedia
(audio, video, and photos), including "originals" as well as thumbnails.
So that is tentatively scheduled for April:
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Roadmap#Operations_3
and after that completes, it would be a good time to ask again about
whether filesize limits could change.
I spoke to WMF operations engineer Ben Hartshorne about this:
<maplebed> at least one thing limiting our ability to increase max
filesize will be removed - capacity on ms5/ms7 will no longer be an issue.
<maplebed> I don't know if there are other things blocking us from
increasing the max filesize.
<maplebed> (well, I do know one - our current software falis to scale
large .pngs)
<maplebed> (but that doesn't prohibit large .jpgs or other media)
I'm asking questions about the file *format* issue as well but that will
take a little longer to resolve.

Maarten, I am not on that list; could you forward my message there? Thanks.

Musopen is a wonderful project, and a perfect fit for us.
When I first heard about this awesome thing a few months ago, my only
disappointment was that it was not yet in the Wikimedia family :)
Maybe this could be pursued in terms of reviving the Featured
Sounds/Video/Media process on Wikipedia and Commons.

Hello,
I am having some trouble trying to find a way to change the thumbnail
display after I upload a video. It seems that after I upload, there is no
way to further manipulate the video file. I have a series of videos that I
would like to upload, but I must ensure that I will have some control as
to what the thumbnail will look like.
My assumption is that WikiMedia auto-selects a point in the video to
choose a thumbnail?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Matt

Hi everyone,
I put all the videos submitted to Wiki Loves Monuments in
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Videos_from_Wiki_Loves_Monument…
. Not a lot of videos I'm afraid. Uploading videos to Commons is just
too difficult I guess......
Should be a nice thing to work on in 2012: How to get more (quality)
user-made videos uploaded to Commons?
Maarten
Hi everyone,
Would it be nice to have a special price for video's made for Wiki Loves
Monuments? We don't have an awful lot of user made video's and this
might be a fun way to promote it.
Maarten
Ps. http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wiki_loves_monuments.ogg is a
nice first step :-)
Hi wiki-videoniks,
Thought you'd all be interested in this initiative for "oral
citations"; the project is actually quite deeply video-centric in an
interesting way.
Thanks,
Richard

Subject: [Foundation-l] Oral Citations project: People are Knowledge
To: Wikimedia Foundation Mailing List <foundation-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Dear friends,
At the beginning of 2011, a group of us began working on a project to
explore alternative methods of citation on Wikipedia. We were motivated
by the lack of published resources in much of the non-Anglo-European
world, and the very real difficulty of citing everyday aspects of lived
reality in India and South Africa.
We are now at a stage where the project is almost complete, and we'd
like to share our work with the broader movement, especially within
India and South Africa.
There are three languages we worked within: Malayalam, Hindi and Sepedi.
The project page documents the process and logistics employed, as well
as the findings and results:
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Research:Oral_Citations
A film made on the project is available here:
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:People-are-Knowledge.ogv?withJS=Medi…http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:People-are-Knowledge.ogv
or
http://vimeo.com/26469276
There have been discussions on oral citations for some time now within
the language communities we worked with for the duration of the project.
At this stage, we are really interested in *your* feedback, either on
this list, or on the Discussion section of the project page.
There are still some things to come, namely:
- Updates on events, meetings and discussions held around the project
(as they happen)
- Updates on articles created in Malayalam, Hindi and Sepedi as a result
of the project (as they happen)
- English transcripts of the interviews and a full English subtitle track
for further translation (we could use some help here).
We would be very grateful to hear your feedback, and begin a broader
discussion.
Best wishes,
Achal

Hi,
just wanted to let you know that I wrote a python script to import
videos from Youtube into any MediaWiki instance. This only works if the
video you are trying to import is available in WebM on Youtube.
The script is at: https://github.com/bit/youtube2mediawiki
Example usage:
./youtube2mediawiki.py -u username -p password -w
http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/api.php DWef69ItVrU
A question regarding the import, right now assets are imported with a
page template that looks like this:
== {{int:filedesc}} ==
{{Information
|Description={{%(description)s}}
|Source={{Own}}
|Author=%(author)s
|Date=%(date)s
|Permission=
|other_versions=%(url)s
}}
<!--{{ImageUpload|full}}-->
== {{int:license}} ==
{{self|cc-by-sa-3.0,2.5,2.0,1.0}}
%(wiki_categories)s
if anyone got suggestions what should/could be added/changed please let
me know.

Hi:
Thx Pharos! I'd be eager to help here - and for now second SJ's nomination of an MIT Open Coursweare clip from the physics classroom.
It'd be great to see if all the tools are in place to harvest Nielsen-type info like how many plays the featured motion picture gets as well as # of page views etc. That info will help more people make the case to put their institutions' educational videos in under these kinds of liberal licenses.
