Hello,

2. If it is not set up yet: Where are the problems? Can the volunteering (responsible) people please say something?
3. when we set up the old Sandbox server from private funding: setting up + running was not much of a hassle (2)
I'll also email people from WMF de

I don't know the background, but can't you use https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Labs ?

Thanks Frederico.
I was worrying that - though WM de offered to fund - this would end up in nothing.
I'll also have a look at your link, that may be another option to get this started faster Here are the services which we ran in the past (1) (Personally: I've my own server running for e.g. some of my PLE activities)
P.S. Jan came up in chat and shared some info, which he will post later

In short, no.
I think that the Labs idea is great, but like the toolserver, it serves a specific need. Now, some projects which were proposed for the Sandbox server could use something like "labs", but many others can't.
If I recall, the WM labs is focused on the WM software and extensions, whereas the Sandbox sees other uses. If I'm wrong in my analysis, then it would be great to see what the lab might offer.
Thanks, Gerald

To find out, just file a request for an account specifying what you need.

One of the people involved in the Labs admin is a party to the discussion. I don't mind having a labs account, but so far the indications that I've gotten is that it has restrictions, much like the toolserver. (The toolserver was suggested as the best thing to use when we first got the idea about this).
Thanks for the suggestion, though. Hopefully you'll be able to use and contribute to the Sandbox server, whatever form it takes.
Thanks, Gerald

This is not very helpful. Any shared server will have restrictions, but this doesn't mean that you always need your own. It might be a language barrier, but I assure you that from the outside it's impossible to understand what do you need and why do you need to follow this path. Anyway, good luck. And try also to contact WM-HU and WM-PL, which have some servers on their own [not only for you].

I wonder how much does it cost to run Wikiversity or Toolserver, that we have to offer tight project to be agreed by these parties.
I always understood SS like another WMF project were WMF as a support organization to the community may offer us on of its written-off servers. But it looks more like, we should work on serious project, with serious goals and serious reports etc.

Hi,
because Gerald doesn't send any note the last months I looked at Nemo's proposal. The Labs seems to be a good alternative to a own server because the Labs give us a very dynamic platform to test and develop new features for Wikiversity and I think the Terms of Use [1] are not forbid our ideas.
If nobody disagree strictly I would ask if our project would be allowed.
Best regards, Jan

I strongly recommend to be bold and ask access immediately; you can always drop it later or reconsider it. ;-) https://labsconsole.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Access Ask in #wikimedia-labs on FreeNode for best result.

Another request: Can anyone give me a Labs-account? I get the message "There were no Nova credentials found for your user account. Please ask a Nova administrator to create credentials for you.". My account name is "jan".

Hi Erkan,
2012/2/1 Erkan Yilmaz erkan77@gmail.com
- What is the status with the Sandbox server? (1)
I was the point person for some time on this. We had gotten an initial commitment, and then weren't able to get things pushed through to setup.
I actually recently picked up the project again, and started to get in touch with the various parties about funding, beginning in December. With the Holidays, we haven't got this side all sorted out yet.
3. when we set up the old Sandbox server from private funding:
setting up + running was not much of a hassle (2)
If we have another funding source, that is a possibility. Right now I'm trying to figure out if WM DE is willing to fund it -- they were very supportive and willing in the past.
It would be nice if we could start some plans for projects, though -- as it would assist in demonstrating the need for funding.
I didn't want to make any public announcements until we had all of the ducks in a row, just so no one would have unreasonable expectations. I do apologize for keeping quiet up until now, though.
Thanks, Gerald
Thanks for the status update.

it shouldn't be difficult to generate needs/projects, since we've already input for that:
