Dear Wikispecies Community,
Wikimania 2025 is just around the corner, and we are thrilled to invite you to contribute your expertise to this global gathering of knowledge-sharing enthusiasts! This year's conference theme, "Wikimania at 20: Inclusivity. Impact. Sustainability," resonates deeply with the mission of Wikispecies to create a comprehensive and accessible directory of all living species.
We encourage you to submit program proposals that explore topics highly relevant to the theme. Here are some ideas on research track that may inspire you:
● Sessions on fostering collaboration across global communities to expand the species catalog.
● Case studies showcasing how Wikispecies data has supported scientific research or conservation initiatives.
● Strategies to maintain and grow the Wikispecies project for future generations.
Proposals can be presented in various formats:
● Remote presentations from the comfort of your home or workplace.
● Pre-recorded sessions to share at the conference.
● Onsite presentations in Nairobi, Kenya.
Submit your proposal by March 31, 2025 through the program submission site https://wikimania.wikimedia.org/wiki/2025:Program .
Additionally, if you have suggestions, comments, or specific requests, feel free to reach out to our team of dedicated volunteers at wikimania(a)wikimedia.org. They are here to help and ensure your voice is heard.
Together, let's make Wikimania 2025 a transformative event for knowledge, collaboration, and sustainability.
Looking forward to your participation,
Warm regards,
Butch Bustria

Dear all,
I wish you a successful start to the week!
My name is Gorana Gomirac, and I am part of the Let’s Connect working group
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Knowledge_Sharing/Connect/Team> a
team of movement contributors/organizers and liaisons for seven regions: MENA,
South Asia, East, South East Asia, Pacific, Sub-Saharan Africa, Central &
Eastern Europe, Northern & Western, and Latin America.
Why are we outreaching to you?
Wikimedia <https://www.wikimedia.org/> has 18 projects, and 17 are solely
run by the community, other than the Wikimedia Foundation. We want to hear
from sister projects that some of us in the Movement are not too familiar
with and would like to know more about. We always want to hear from
Wikipedia, but we also want to meet and hear from the community members in
other sister projects too, like Wikispecies. We would like to hear your
story and learn about the work you and your community do. You can review
our past learning clinics here
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Knowledge_Sharing/Connect/Calendar>
.
We want to invite community members who are:
-
Part of an organized group, official or not
-
A formally recognized affiliate or not
-
An individual who will bring their knowledge back to their community
-
An individual who wants to train others in their community on the
learnings they received from the learning clinics.
To participate as a sharer and become a member of the Let’s Connect
community you can sign up through this registration form.
<https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdiea87tSYmB2-1XHn_u8RLe7efMJifJBz…>
Once you have registered, if you are interested, you can get to know the
team via Google Meets or Zoom to brainstorm an idea for a potential
learning clinic about Wikispecies or just say hello and meet the team.
Please email us at letsconnect(a)wikimedia.org .
We look forward to hearing from you :)
Best,
The Let’s Connect Working Group

Hi Folks,
We encourage each and everyone of you to create a program submission. You can submit an interactive workshop or panel, a lecture, a short lighting talk or a poster for our dedicated poster session. Submissions are catered to both onsite and online (live or pre-recorded) or a hybrid combination. We at the Core Organizing Team would like to see a program submission related to non-traditional online projects such as Wikispecies.
The theme for this year's Wikimania is Diversity, Collaboration, Future. Topics that strengthen collaboration on online campaigns and initiatives are topics we like to see this year. There are also photography outreach (photo walks, teaching participants on Nature Photography), visit to the Singapore Botanic Gardens, Garden by the Bay, or to an upcoming aviary to be opened in Mandai, Singapore in August 2023 called Bird Paradise. Singapore is one of a few countries where nature reserves and parks are at close proximity. It is great way to collaborate with each other. There is also a spacious Wikimania Expo space where Wikispecies projects can be exhibited.
For participants joining virtually, we also have allocated online hours for you too to allow you to participate & present.
Session submissions for Wikimania 2023 are open until 28 March.

On August 2020, the Wikimedia Foundation board of trustees may decide a
rename to "Wikipedia Foundation" and various other things.
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_Board_noticeboard/Boar…>
Following a community meeting, a proposed open letter was written:
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Community_open_letter_on_renaming>
«We ask the Wikimedia Foundation to pause or stop its current movement
renaming activities, due to persistent shortcomings in the current
rebranding process. Future work should be restarted only in a way that
ensures equitable decision-making.»

I'd like to add that the scalpers that bought a crap load if tickets overestimated what fans were willing to pay.
For a destination show during a major holiday: when you add travel cost, lodging and food for 5 - 6 days PLUS overpriced tickets from Stub Hub... You will find that a higher percentage of fans are not willing to spend THAT much.
Streaming also is a factor.
