Interesting, considering that Wikispecies itself has 425 thousands main
namespace pages in total (including redirects)...

Oggetto: [Wikimedia-l] Lsjbot has now started to generate 1-1, 5 M
articles of species on sv:wp

Inspired by the botgenerated articles of species made on nl:wp in late
2010 a colleague of mine, User:Lsj, started a similar project on sv:wp
early 2012. By October 2012 his bot had generated some 65 000 articles,
with essentially complete coverage of all fungi and birds.
He has since then extended the scope to include all living species, both
animals and plants, which means another 1-1,5 million articles. Running
at full permissible bot speed, the bot generates around 10,000 articles
per day, but at a more realistic speed, the full project will take the
rest of 2013 to complete.
The botcode has been written in a language-independent way, so that it
can be ported to other language versions with only a modest effort. All
language-specific text strings are in external files, so the code itself
does not need changing between language versions. Beyond Swedish, the
code has been tested on Cebuano wikipedia as well; full production on
cebwp is ready to go, just awaiting community blessing there.
The source of the core of the data is taken from Catalogue of Life
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catalogue_of_Life but the bot also checks
with Commons, other languages(iwlinks) and other appropriate databases,
such as the IUCN Redlist of endangered species.
The botcode is written in C# and uses the DotNetWikiBot framework.
Example articles:
http://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lichenopora_verrucariahttp://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phylactolaematahttp://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rundkrassinghttp://ceb.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sipunculidaehttp://ceb.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solaster_endeca
The full set of created articles (includes some other stuff as well,
besides organisms):
http://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kategori:Robotskapade_artiklarhttp://ceb.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kategoriya:Paghimo_ni_bot
My colleague is much too busy now to discuss himself just now, but I
think it could be an inspiration for us all.
Besides Lsj himself there are about 10 users supporting him, with
checking that the bot generate correct data etc, it has also been
discussed extensively on our village pump etc Wikidata is as yet not
used
The page where the project is discussed is just now (in Swedish of
course..)

I wonder if anyone could write (or has written) a bot to link the entries in wikispecies to the entries of individual species databases (or create such wikispecies entries in the first place).
The Catalogue of Life is compiled from about 100 individual species databases (http://www.catalogueoflife.org/col/info/databases), each of which has much more information than the CoL excerpts from them. For instance, I maintain the Reptile Database (http://www.reptile-database.org) which lists almost 10,000 species, many of which do not have a wikispecies entry.
It would be great to have a bot that (1) links from each wikispecies to its respective entry in the species database and (2) updates that link once the name changes (which, unfortunately happens quite often). Obviously, this should be done for each species database as well as other metadatabases such as EoL or the NCBI taxonomy database.
Thanks and cheers,
Peter
Dear all,
A Wikispecies editor created an interactive illustrated Tree of Life [1] based on the Wikispecies data dump file. It's cool, go check it out!

Three days left! This is also about new user groups and thematical
organisations for individual projects, so forwarding.

Hello everyone,
I am pleased to announce the beginning of Steward Election 2012 [1]. We are
now taking nominations from eligible candidates. Interested candidates can
check their eligibility and procedure to submit the nomination on the
guidelines page [2]. We are open to candidate submissions till January 28,
2012, 23:59 (UTC). Questions to the candidates can be submitted until
February 6, 2012, 23:59 (UTC). Guidelines about questioning can also be
found on our guidelines page [2].
This time we are also arranging the confirmation of existing stewards [3].
But the confirmation will begin on February 8, and will finish on February
27, 2012.
Please remember, the voting has not yet begun and will be not until
February 8, 2012, 00:00 (UTC). We will poke you once again when the voting
start.
As you all know steward election is a global event, so we need help from
volunteers to translate necessary pages into languages they speak. For
those who want to help us out with translation, please see our translation
portal [4]. And if you have any queries related to translation or anything
related to the election, you can ask us on the talk page [5]. Alternatively
you are free to poke us on IRC channel #wikimedia-stewards-elections.
For those who are a little bit surprised to see another election in few
months, I want to let you know that previous one (in September-October of
2011) was a special one which we arranged in need. This is the regular one
to elect new stewards and to confirm existing ones.
Please feel free to forward this e-mail to any list if you think it will be
useful. :-)
Regards,
Tanvir Rahman

*Call for referendum*: The Wikimedia Foundation, at the direction of
the Board of Trustees, will be holding a vote to determine whether
members of the community support the creation and usage of an opt-in

particular types of images strictly for their own account.
Further details and educational materials will be available shortly.
The referendum is scheduled for 12-27 August, 2011, and will be

Oggetto: Five-year WMF targets exclude non-Wikipedia projects
Data: Sun, 10 Oct 2010 12:33:07 +0200
Da: Federico Leva (Nemo)
A: Wikimedia Foundation Mailing List <foundation-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Despite repeated assurances at Wikimania, on lists and on strategywiki,
that the strategic plan was going to consider all Wikimedia projects as
important, now at
http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Resolution:Five-year_targets the
second target, «Increase the amount of information we offer» considers
only the number of Wikipedia articles.
«We're aware of the challenges around bot-created articles, articles of
low quality, etc., and the limited focus on Wikipedia, so this metric
shouldn't be seen in isolation, but is an important indicator.» Yes, but
a wrong one.
I'm, very, very disappointed: I have to conclude that all the words on
community participation etc. were only empty rhetoric.
