Pharos proposed Thursday 5 April for the next US WALRUS meeting. I cannot
meet on that day, and in general, the first and last weeks of months are
always bad for me because many groups schedule things on the first or last
"xday" of the month.
I would prefer a consistent day of the week in either the second or third
week of every month. I propose Wednesdays, so for next month either second
Wednesday the 11th or third Wednesday the 18th. Whatever the day, I propose
that day of the week happen consistently in that same week every month. I
am open to proposals of other days. I would prefer to keep the evening time
as it is.
To put something up right now - how would others feel about Wednesday April
11, 9pm EST / 6pm PST, #wikimedia-us channel on IRC?
http://webchat.freenode.net/?channels=wikimedia-us
How does this compare to Pharos' proposal of Thursday 5 April?

My fellow Wiki-Americans,
Thanks to every one of the 22 Wiki-Americans who joined in for our
inaugural meeting :)
Please, everyone, have a look at the meeting summary, and add your
thoughts to it:

Thanks,

My fellow Wiki-Americans,
I would like to propose that we start holding monthly online Wikimedia
US / WALRUS meetings, as a way to share our diverse experiences in
local outreach and coordination.
I would suggest the easy-to-remember first of every month, at 9pm
Eastern Time / 6pm Pacific Time.
That would make our first meeting on the evening of Thursday March 1.
The venue would be the #wikimedia-northeast channel on IRC, and if
you're not familiar with IRC, please just use this easy web client:
http://webchat.freenode.net/?channels=wikimedia-northeast
Thanks,
Richard

My fellow Wiki-Americans,
This might be an excellent opportunity to organize the next meetup in
your region around:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiWomen%27s_History_Month
(sequel to Wikipedia Loves Libraries, and also highly appropriate for
a library setting!)
Thanks,
Richard

For a spring activity, I propose we team up with OSM folks across the US
and run a series of mapping parties. Better OSM = better maps in
Wikipedia. :)
There's very much a need to build and strengthen mapping communities (and
Wikipedia meetup groups) in the United States, especially outside of places
like Boston, DC, and SF.
Simple tools like walking papers (pen & paper!) can be used, so the
technical requirements can be low, -- http://walking-papers.org/ and there
are bunch of us happy to provide guidance, if needed.
Cheers,
Katie

My fellow Wiki-Americans,
Time to start planning for Wikipedia Day 2012 coming up in January :)
In NYC, we'll probably be doing a daylong mini-conference at New York
University, as we did last year and also in 2009.
Given the success of Wikipedia 10, I think it's important to keep this up
as an annual celebration, especially in encouraging a multiplicity of
events in new cities and regions.
Whether it's a mega-event or a micro-event, please propose it here and
we'll spread the word together:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Wikipedia_Day/United_States
Thanks,
Richard

If you are at all interested in cultural and GLAM outreach, I invite you to
subscribe to a new regional mailing list on the topic:
http://lists.wikimedia.ch/listinfo/glam-north-america
It's a place to discuss and share about projects and coordinate outreach.
Right now, there's an abundance of opportunities for Wikipedians to work
with and help well-respected institutions get involved with Wikipedia!
Please come join the mailing list to find out more and get involved.
Cheers,
Katie

My fellow Wikimericans,
I thought this might be interesting, it's a summit of Ibero-American
Wikimedia chapters and chapters-to-be, and possible inspiration for us
USA-Americans...
A point to consider in advance of the 1st Annual Great American Wiknic :)
Thanks,
Richard

Subject: [Internal-l] Ibero-American Wikimedia Summit
To: "Local Chapters, board and officers coordination (closed
subscription)" <internal-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Dear friends:
>From Friday 24 to Sunday 26 Wikimedia Argentina will be hosting the
first Ibero-American Wikimedia Summit in Buenos Aires. This
Ibero-American Wikimedia Summit will gather representatives from
Wikimedia Argentina, Wikimedia Chile, Wikimedia España and Wikimedia
Portugal, as well as working groups from Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia,
Mexico, Uruguay and Venezuela that are currently working towards the
establishment of local chapters in their countries.
We wanted the event to focus especially on these groups, so that
already established chapters can help developing the Wikimedia
movement in our region by means of sharing experiences and know-how,
as well as working on somme common, cross-frontier projects.
Unlike most international events in the Wikimedia scene, the
Ibero-American Wikimedia Summit will have only Spanish and Portuguese
as its working languages. We believe it's better to use our native
languages to discuss the common challenges and shared grounds our
region has. We believe regional efforts such as this help making
multilingualism real.
Ibero-America shares not only a land mass; more important, the reasons
behind Ibero-American cooperation have to do with a shared history, a
common culture and two sister languages such as Spanish and
Portuguese, which are mutually intelligible to a very high degree.
The final schedule can be seen at
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Encuentro_Wikimedia_Iberoamericano_2011/Prog…;
a rough English translation of the proposed agenda that led to it can
be seen here: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Ibero-American_Wikimedia_Summit_2011/Agenda/…
The conference will span for three days, from Friday 24 to Sunday 26.
The first day we'll be discussing general topics having to do with
forming a working group and running a chapter. On Friday we'll
dedicate one our and a half to a panel/workshop on educational
outreach (Wikipedia en el aula) with Lila Pagola, a professor from the
National University of Villa María who was a pioneer in incorporating
Wikimedia projects in her classes, and Ángeles Soletic, from the
Innovation in Education and Tecnology Centre of the University in
Buenos Aires. During the afternoon, we'll be discussing about the
Foundation's Five-Year Plan and the way in which it relates with our
region, emphasizing about the "Global South" concept. We expect to
produce some documents to discuss with all of the community
afterwards.
Waiting to see some of you here this week, un abrazo,
Patricio
