created a GLAM (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, Museums) group for kansas,
mailing list for topeka and a facebook page linked from here
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/Topeka would like to
organize some more meetups at different historic sites in topeka (and even
other places if we can find someone with a car), go there and take photos,
collect information and work on the articles. It could be a great group
event. please let me know what you think, and sign up on the mailing list
if you like. Also if you know of GLAM sites anywhere in kansas, please add
them to the list.
Also I would like to organize a photo contest for Kansas.
Hello everyone,
I'm very pleased to announce that Dominic McDevitt-Parks will be joining
Wikimedia DC as our new Cultural Partnerships Coordinator!
I expect that most of you already know Dominic, who has been a long-time
Wikimedian and a regular participant in events both within the DC area and
elsewhere. Dominic has graciously offered us the benefit of his immense
experience with building partnerships between cultural institutions and the
Wikimedia movement, most notably in during his tenure as the
Wikipedian-in-Residence at the National Archives and Records Administration.
In his new position as Cultural Partnerships Coordinator, Dominic will
report directly to the Board of Directors of Wikimedia DC. He will have
number of responsibilities, including serving as a point of contact for
DC-area cultural institutions and professionals looking for guidance from
Wikimedia; facilitating communication and sharing of best practices among
professionals and Wikimedians and between the two groups; helping to
initiate and evaluate partnerships between institutions and Wikimedia DC,
as appropriate, in the interest of the chapter's goals and the Wikimedia
movement as a whole; and serving as the bridge between the Wikimedia DC
community and the global GLAM-Wiki community.
Please join me in welcoming Dominic to his new role!
Cheers,
Kirill

Apologies for the inevitable cross-posting but I just wanted to get this
out to those of us in the US, which currently has no members on the
Affiliations Committee despite being a major region for potential new
chapter development in the coming years. Please consider volunteering!

Dear all,
The Affiliations Committee [1], the committee that is responsible for
guiding volunteers in establishing Chapters, User Groups and Thematic
Organizations ("affiliates" in short) and approving them when they are
ready is looking for about 6 new members.
The main focus of AffCom is to guide groups of volunteers in forming
affiliates. We make sure that the group is large enough to be viable
(and advise them on how to get bigger), review bylaws for compliance
with the requirements and best practices, and advise the Board of the
Wikimedia Foundation on issues connected to Chapters, Thematic
Organizations and User Groups.
This requires communication with volunteers all over the World,
negotiating skills and cultural sensitivity and the ability to
understand legal texts. We try to get a healthy mix of different skill
sets in our members.
Key skills/experience that we are looking for in candidate members,
are typically:
* Excitement by the challenge of helping to empower groups of
volunteers worldwide
* Willingness to work in a sometimes bureaucratic, sometimes political
process
* 4 hours per week availability[2]
* International orientation
* Very good communication skills in English
* Ability to work and communicate with other cultures
* Strong understanding of the structure and work of affiliates and the WMF
* Communication skills in other languages are a major plus
* Experience with or in an active affiliate is a major plus
With the help of the Affiliations Committee, 2012 has been an exciting
year of transformation for the movement with the introduction of new
types of affiliation. This means that the workload of the Committee
has increased and diversified and help is wanted! Currently many
applications to become a Chapter, Thematic Organization or User Group
are in the pipeline and can use your attention and dedication!
You can send your applications with your name, contact data (e-mail,
wiki username), experience and motivation to join to the AffCom email
address, affcom AT lists DOT wikimedia DOT org by January 12, 2013.
You will get a confirmation that your application came through.
Members are usually selected every twelve months for staggered two
year terms. The applications will be considered by the current members
and outgoing members and Committee advisers, who are not seeking
re-selection.
Since I will be a candidate for re-selection myself, this process will
be managed by another committee member, Lodewijk Gelauff. I hope for
many suitable applications. If you have any questions, please don't
hesitate to email me or Lodewijk[3] privately. We are happy to chat or
have a phone call with anyone about our work, if this helps them
decide to apply.
Please distribute this call among your networks, and do apply if you
are interested.
Best regards,
Bence Damokos

Greetings Walri,
For those of you who are interested in the idea of GLAM, I am excited to
announce a new GLAM-related event we're planning in the US. Wikimedia DC,
in cooperation with the National Archives as host, is organizing GLAM Boot
Camp, a new model of event in which those of us with extensive backgrounds
in GLAM projects will be giving a workshop to share experiences and teach
skills relevant to the GLAM-Wiki project.
The concept for this event was developed at GLAMcamp London, and the idea
behind it is to give experienced Wikimedians the skillset and confidence
they need to engage in GLAM projects so that, ultimately, GLAM-Wiki will be
more representative of the regular Wikimedia editing community. At
GLAMcamp, the lack of broad community participation from different types of
contributors was identified as one of the effort's key problems. So this is
for all of you Wikimedians who like the concept of helping libraries,
museums and archives share their knowledge with Wikimedia, even if
(especially if) you aren't actually experienced in doing that yet. With
Wikimedia DC's help, we are planning to cover the travel costs of all
attendees, to ensure that money or geography are not a barrier to
participation.
I would like to invite anyone who is intrigued to please indicate your
interest by answering a few short questions on this Google form: <
http://goo.gl/TCiYx>. This is especially important so we can pin down the
ideal weekend to hold the event, and the sooner we get responses, the
sooner we can reserve the venue.
To learn more about the GLAM Boot Camp, please see the more detailed
description and proposed program at <
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:GLAM/Boot_Camp>.
Thanks!
Dominic
