Hi Wiki-Americans,
Our New York City event for wikipedia Day in January is looking to take on
an unconference format, and link by video regionally and globally with
similar events sharing lightning talks from different cities.
The question remains though, should we do this Friday January 15, or that
perhaps more conveniently that weekend, Saturday January 16 or Sunday
January 17?
The input of other locations would be appreciated, let's settle on a common
date soon!

Subject: Upcoming press release to celebrate 5 million articles on English
Wikipedia
Dear colleagues,
Aligned with discussions at the Wikimedia Conference about coordinating
press releases around the world, I would like to invite you to participate
in the drafting and upcoming publication of a community-written press
release that celebrates English Wikipedia's milestone of 5 million
articles. I particularly extend this invitation to affiliates which are
located in areas where English (in any dialect) is a primary, official, or
common language.
Drafting and discussion are happening here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Village_pump_%28miscellaneous%29#5_…
Please ask your affiliates to participate in a near-simultaneous press
release from interested affiliates and WMF on the day that English
Wikipedia reaches 5 million articles.
Please make sure that your affiliate's contact information is current on
Meta so that it can be included in the press release. Journalists may wish
to speak with representatives of your organization about the press release
and about Wikipedia in general.
This event offers and opportunity to raise public awareness of Wikipedia in
general and our many accomplishments, as well as the many challenges and
opportunities ahead of us to make English Wikipedia in particular be more
accurate, friendly, inclusive, accessible, reputable, and comprehensive.
Regards,
Pine
Hi Wiki-Americans,
We would like to do something special in NYC for next year's Wikipedia Day,
to help kick off the year celebrating the 15th anniversary, on January 15
or thereabouts, and would welcome collaboration with North American and
other cities by video link for that day.
for context, last year's Wikipedia Day in NYC-
Wiki page:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC/Wikipedia_Day_2015
Videos page:
http://livestream.com/internetsociety/wikidaynyc15
(especially see lightning talks, etc, which could be spread globally in
bitesize chunks)
Besides NYC, I think WMDC is hosting a Diversity Conference about the same
time that could be a part of this, and Cascadia was also I think
considering an event in Vancouver.
Thanks,
Pharos

Subject: Seeking comments and translations for proposed video project
Dear Wikimedia colleagues:
I am developing a proposal for a video series that's designed to introduce
Wikimedia to new contributors (particularly in GLAM and education
programs), and to motivate them to participate in the community in a
constructive way. I would appreciate your input. The video is intended for
translation into multiple languages; there are already volunteers for
Spanish and German translation.
The proposal's main draft page is here:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:IEG/Motivational_and_educational_vid…
The proposal talk page is here; it includes a draft outline of specific
subjects to cover:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants
talk:IEG/Motivational_and_educational_video_to_introduce_Wikimedia
Please note that the scope and budget of the project are still under
consideration. At this point it would be especially helpful to have input
on the subjects that the video should cover, and how best to cover them.
This information will help as the project scope and budget are refined.
Please add your questions and comments to the talk page.
If you would like to support the project with your endorsement, please do
so here:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:IEG/Motivational_and_educational_vid…
If you would like to volunteer to translate the video, please email me or
comment on the talk page.
Thanks and regards,
Pine
