My fellow Wiki-Americans,
In December, we had our first hosting by a "rotating presidency" of WALRUS,
with Ganesh gamely representing the Georgia Piedmont usergroup.
Ganesh was able to being some fresh perspectives, and brought us to a new
level of organization with the slide deck and the inclusion of a live demo
by another member.
Slide deck from December:
https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/11vKo-3y0DNOwSqEH46ZTtZUs4zh1ycKlm2F…
Certainly you do not need such an elaborate deck, but it's an example of
the type of thing you can do when you help set the agenda.
We'd like to invite other usergroups/regions to be part of a "rotating
presidency" in January and beyond, starting with the next WALRUS meeting on
January 14.
And here are the next few WALRUS meeting dates, if one of these work better:
January 14
February 11
March 11
Do any of these dates work for you and your usergroup?
Feel free to reach out on this list or privately, if your usergroup/region
would like to "host" the call in January or beyond.
Thanks,
Richard

Hi all,
Speaking as a co-organizer for Wiki Loves Monuments in the United States,
I'm pleased to relay that the international winners of Wiki Loves Monuments
2018 have been announced! Check them out if you'd like to see awesome pics
of historical sites from around the world.
WLM Blog coverage:

Wikimedia Foundation Blog coverage:

If you haven't yet, you can also check out the top-ten photos from the
United States' national competition here:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2018_in_the…
I'm thrilled to say that a photo from the United States placed 9th
internationally. The photo is of the Procession Panel found along the Comb
Ridge in the Shash Jaa National Monument. The photo is by Marc Toso from
AncientSkys Photography (https://www.ancientskys.com/):

Another photo from the United States placed 16th internationally; this was
a photo of Hidden Lake Lookout by Nick Archibald
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hidden_Peak_Fire_Lookout_at_sunset,…
Wiki Loves Monuments 2018 saw over 258,000 photos submitted by over 14,000
photographer from 50 countries. In the United States, we had over 10,000
photos uploaded by over 1,900 individuals. Last year we had no U.S. images
in the international top-25, while this year we had 2 - which is a great
improvement to see!
I'd like to give a quick thanks to the international WLM team, my fellow
U.S. organizers (Niki Korth and Laura Soito), and our numerous awesome
judges who went through an endless number of images. Finally, a shout-out
to anyone from WALRUS who participated in WLM this year.
Thanks,
Kevin Payravi

Hi fellow Wiki-Americans,
You can still apply for a Wikipedia Day grant, the deadline is December 15,
though sooner is better.
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/Rapid/Apply#Meeting
So far, we have grants from LA, Atlanta and SF (all approved!), and
Cambridge and Colorado (still pending approval).
You can apply for $500-2,000, and you can choose to apply for Wikipedia Day
or a series of a few events together.
Let me know if I can help anyone individually with your city or region's
event(s)!
You might also be inspired by looking at some of the text for the existing
rapid grants.
Thanks,
Pharos
Forwarding in case US Wikimedians who aren't on the Education or GLAM
mailing lists would like to participate in this.

Subject: [Wikimedia Education] help test usability of the Event Metrics
program
To: <glam(a)lists.wikimedia.org>, <education(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Do you organize wiki events? Would you like to have a convenient tool that
provides metrics about the impact of your events? Then you are a potential
user of Event Metrics [1], a new tool under development. I’m writing now to
find event organizes who can help us test the usability of this new metrics
program, to make sure people such as yourself can understand and easily use
its functions.
The test will involve a one-hour videoconference session with a design
researchers, who will lead you through a series of tasks on the program and
talk to you about how well the tool's user interface works for you and how
it could be improved. Sessions will take place the second and third weeks
of January.
If you’d like to help out, please email Daisy Chen, dchen[at]wikimedia.org,
and let her know:
* The email address where you prefer to be reached.
* Your time zone
* General times when you prefer to meet (evenings, mornings, etc.)
Daisy will follow up to schedule a time. Thanks for helping to make Event
Metrics a tool that event organizers will find empowering!
Joe

Hello!
Summary -
- Anyone can host a Wikipedia party in their local university, library,
or community center
- You should host a Wikipedia party in January 2019
- The Wikimedia Foundation offers event funding support up to $2000 with
a simple form that you fill out by 15 November
- January 2019 is unusual for a change in public domain legal status,
and your local uni / library is probably keen to co-host with you if you
bring cake
-------------------
On January 15, 2001, Wikipedia was established and also creativecommons.org
was registered. The organizations came to be good collaborators, with
content in Wikipedia being available through Creative Commons licenses.
There is a tradition in January of celebrating Wikipedia's birthday,
Wikipedia Day!, and anyone can host a birthday party. Celebrate Creative
Commons also! See previous events and documentation at
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Wikipedia_Day
If you think you might host an event, please request funding NOW and by 15
November for response in December. Expenses which the Wikimedia Foundation
has sponsored in the past include the cost of snacks for attendees, fees
associated with renting a meeting space in a community center, and costs
associated with promoting accessibility and diversity among participants.
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/Rapid
Something unusual about this year is that 2019 in the United States is the
first time since the late 1990s when there will be copyright expiration of
published works. See context:
https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2018/04/copywritten-so-dont-…https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2019_in_public_domain#Entering_the_public_dom…
In practical terms, for as long as Wikipedia has existed we have given the
general copyright advice that works published after 1923 are under
copyright. In January 2019, our advice changes for the first time in nearly
20 years to be 1924, and we will count forward every year from this point
with all the media from those years entering the public domain. Many
librarians know about this shift in public domain, and your local
university library might be hosting an event already to which you can add a
Wikipedia talk or workshop + cake. If you show up with cake and wiki then
they will love you and wiki forever.
Public Domain Day + Wikipedia Day + <3 Creative Commons in January 2019!
Thanks everyone and speak up here or on the Wikipedia Day talk page if you
have questions.
