Dear Wikimedians,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2010 Picture of the Year
competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which
images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2010. Any user registered
at a Wikimedia wiki since 2010 or prior with more than 200 edits as of 1
January 2011 (UTC) is welcome to vote. Check your eligibility now.[1] If
you meet the criteria, you are able to vote.
Nearly 800 images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the
international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered
in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to
breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant
images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems,
diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human
portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.
For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two
rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many
images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall
will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number
of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become
the Picture of the Year.
To see the candidate images just go to:
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2010/Galleries
Wikimedia Commons is interested in hearing your opinions on our featured
images of 2010. The deadline for first round voting is the 4th of May at
23:59 (UTC).
Thanks,
Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Subject: [Foundation-l] Announcing Wikimedia Education List
To: Wikimedia Foundation Mailing List <foundation-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Hi All,
We would like to take this opportunity to announce the new Wikimedia
Education list. During the past Wikimania conferences we seen
incredible examples of educational use of Wikimedia Projects or
Content. During the recent chapter conference in Berlin we saw some
more. These are often not related to a specific project and often have
subject matter which involves a different audience than the other
general mailing lists. Thats why we decided to start a new mailing
list which will hopefully foster creative discussion on the topic at
hand.
So what would we like to discuss on this list:
* Educational use of Wikimedia content or projects
* Best practices
* Educational Licensing
* Educational Outreach
* Other Open Educational Resource Projects
* Anything else that is education related :)
Everyone is welcome to post to the list. You can subscribe to the list
at https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/education .The list
will be moderated by Cormaggio, Jan-Bart and Louriepieterse.
Hope to see you there!
Cormaggio, Jan-Bart and Lourie
PS: Small disclaimer: although Jan-Bart is a member of the Board of
Trustees, this is not an offical WMF initiative, but a community
initiative.

Subject: [Wiki Loves Monuments] Fwd: WLM meeting in Berlin, 13 May 2011
To: Wiki Loves Monuments Photograph Competition
<wikilovesmonuments(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Hi all,
on Friday May 13, 2011 there will be an international Wiki Loves
Monuments workshop in Berlin. This workshop will be organized by me
and Maarten and Wikimedia Deutschland.
Because we're organizing a European contest, we would like to make
sure that every participating country/region is going to be
represented at this workshop, so that we can coordinate matters,
exchange experiences and help wach other with problems.
who is coming
I would like to ask all participating countries to check with
themselves who will be going. There is a maximum of 25 participants,
so please restrict yourself in sending people. There will be no
absolute maxima at this stage, but I ask for your understanding.
Please send *asap* on this list who will be coming. We will then
provide you with a code to register.
costs
The costs for this meeting will be 25-35 euro per night, incl
breakfast and your own travel costs. If you are representing a chapter
that would like to join WLM and to attend, but does not have the
funds, please send your details anyway, and let us know that you need
financial support. We will find a way to support you.
program
The program still will have to be figured out. However, on
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2011/Timeline
you can find several topics that will have to be discussed.
hackathon
This workshop is coupled to the hackathon happening 13-15 May in
Berlin too. This allows for interaction with the developers, and ways
to ask them to help us write tools etc which we need. See for more
information about the hackathon:
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Berlin_Hackathon_2011 . If you are a
developer, you will also be able to register there. Some developers
might also attend our workshop. If you're a developer, consider to
hang around two more days :)
If you have any questions, please ask them. I dont have to remind you
that we need to act quickly here, sorry for the delays, because the
tickets will get more expensive etc.
Best regards,
Lodewijk

i øvrigt.
Mvh.
Rune
Det er ikke helt så tæt på som det var i '10, men stadig forholdsvis
let at komme til.

I can't recall if we've had someone active from WM Denmark on the list recently. We just got this call in, and I figure it would be better if a Danish speaker could get back to them to describe the difference clearly. We'll do it if I don't hear back in the next hour or so - cognizant that the day is winding down in Europe...

Emne: [Translators-l] New request: Licensing tutorial for Wikimedia Commons
Til: "Wikimedia Translators" <translators-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Hi,
As you may have seen on the Wikimedia Blog, we just published an
illustrated licensing tutorial for Wikimedia Commons:
http://blog.wikimedia.org/blog/2010/11/05/illustrated-licensing-tutorial-wi…
The tutorial will be integrated into the new upload wizard (to be
enabled at the end of the month) and I'm coming to you today to help us
translate and localize it.
This translation request is a bit special, since it consists not only of
translating text, but also of localizing some of the graphics (if
needed).
If you feel uncomfortable updating / creating the graphics yourself, you
can focus on the translation and someone else will add your translation
to a localized version of the tutorial.
I already did the French translation, in order to identify the biggest
problems that could be encountered during the translation. I've added
some recommendations & instructions on the coordination page.
Please read them carefully, as it will save your time and ensure we can
publish your work in the software interface.
Many thanks in advance for your help!
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Licensing_tutorial
If you have any question, comment or doubt, please ask on the talk page
and I'll do my best to help solve the issue.
