WikiConference North America has gone virtual! Join the Wikimedia
community, 11-13 December 2020 online for talks, training, gatherings, and
chats.

with lightning talks, open space sessions and a virtual lounge space.
Attendees must abide by a safe space policy.

The Friday Culture Crawl focuses on GLAM Wiki and cultural heritage. The
weekend sessions are made of events hosted by partners and original
content, such as an update on activity by North American Affiliates and a
session on the state of the Wikimedia 2030 movement strategy process.
It's not all business - the conference is also designed for social
interaction and fun. The presence of a WikiCheese meetup is rumored but
unconfirmed, and bring your own beverage and munchies for social activity

topical chats, or perform at the Sock Puppet Stage or Talk Page Theater.
Hang out with friends old and new in the many zones in the virtual lounge.

You are invited to join the Wikimedia NYC community for our annual summer
Great American Wiknic, this year being held virtually.
We look forward to seeing local Wikimedians, but would also like to invite
folks from the greater New York metropolitan area (and beyond!) who might
not typically be able to join us in person!
Featuring artist-Wikimedian Sara Clugage's "Picnics: An Outside History"
for a cultural exploration of picnicking, knowledge and society during the
national panel in the first part. We encourage you to call in for the
second part from a local park or natural site and share it on the video
stream, as well as sharing your favorite picnic grub or other special foods
with us.
The Wiknic is also taking the place of "WikiWednesday" this month, so we
will also include salon and knowledge-sharing workshop aspects.
Sunday August 16 Great American Wiknic NYC:
3:00 pm - online via YouTube (watch our national panel's livestream, and
participate by text chat)

Dear Wiki-Yorkers,
Please join Wikimedia NYC and Kundiman for a weeklong Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon
focusing on Asian American literature. Since 2018, Kundiman and Wikimedia
NYC and DC have partnered to address the erasure of Asian American writers
online. We’ve taken the opportunity of social distancing to extend our
traditional one-day Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon into a weeklong marathon of
editing! There is no experience required, and Wikipedia newbies are
encouraged! We will offer three introductory trainings via Zoom throughout
the week. Sign-up at http://www.kundiman.org/wiki-week.
Also this week, Wikimedia NYC is hosting its monthly WikiWednesday Salon at
7PM on Wednesday, May 20th. This month, we'll focus on WikiProject New York
City and our favorite local articles, as well as Wiki Loves Pride past and
future. Log-in details available at

As always, please don't hesitate to reach out with any questions. We look

Dear Wiki-Yorkers,
When the public hears about something on the news and wants to learn more,
they turn to Wikipedia. That's as true during the COVID-19 pandemic as
ever, with the site receiving record-breaking pageviews in April. But why
does anyone consider it reliable? Who are the people volunteering their
time to contribute to this content that so many people rely on? How do they
organize themselves to coordinate improvement of the topic? There are
thousands of articles about the pandemic in more than 150 languages. What
kinds of topics do they cover? In what ways does Wikipedia and its sister
sites, like Wikidata, collect and use data about the pandemic?
The Symposium on Wikipedia and COVID-19 aims to answer questions the public
may have about Wikipedia's coverage of the pandemic. The event includes
four speakers, all of whom are active contributors to the topic area on
Wikipedia, but bring different perspectives, backgrounds, and interests.
The event is free and open to the public, broadcast live on YouTube and
Facebook, and questions taken from viewers on these platforms. No prior
experience with Wikipedia is expected.
*** Symposium on Wikipedia and COVID-19 ***
When: Saturday, May 9th 6 - 8PM
Where: Streaming on YouTube and Facebook
Full description (including speaker bios):

RSVP:
