Hello all,
I attended the Wikipedia 10th anniversary celebration with the expectation
that something like this would be active in Chennai. I can participate and
support the activities for such a group. Leading such an activity would not
be possible because of my lack of experience in editing Wikipedia.
Regards,
Karthik

Hello all,
The tenth anniversary Wikipedia meetup went on successfully. I have posted a
brief summary here[1]. I would like to thank
Manian,Mahir,Parithimathi,Ravichandar,Theni Subramani for their efforts in
making the meetup successful.Keeping the momentum,at this juncture I would
like to propose monthly meetups focusing in detail on editing /
contributions apart from Introduction to Wikipedia. Meetups however small
will help in sharing ideas, experiences, how-tos in the Wiki world would be
useful for wikipedians.
I would like to share the success story of Bangalore meetups here. Every
second sunday Bangalore wikipedians meet and share things related to
Wiki-world activities. A typical meetup would have one / two persons doing a
talk for 30 minutes each and then will have discussions. We also had Skype
discussions from Wikipedians across the globe. The talks can be at any level
of expertise starting from getting introduced to editing or even advanced
topics like bot creation etc. The series of meetups helped us over a period
of one year to have ~25 people contributing to Wikipedia with additional
level of expertise. We would also have introduced to Wikipedia to over 200
people easily who attend one or the other meetups. I think its time we do a
similar exercise in Chennai as well.
I request someone from Chennai to take the lead and start the meetups. I
could help in getting a venue. All that is required is atleast 3 - 4 people
committing their Sunday afternoon for Wikipedia and am sure the initiative
will be a successful one :)

Hi all,
The tenth anniversary of Wikipedia was celebrated at Madras Institute of
Technology, Chennai. It was attended by ~70 people including English,Tamil
and Malayalam Wikipedians. The event started with a cake cutting ceremony.
Ravichandar spoke about English wikipedia. Mahir spoke about Tamil
Wikipedia,Wikinews and Wiktionary. A book "Tamil Wikipedia"(in Tamil)
written by Tamil wikipedian and writer Theni.M.Subramani was released by
Badri Sheshadri(Publisher,New Horizon Media). Badri then spoke about
Wikipedia, importance of language wikipedia and how books like the one
released is essential in reaching out to masses. There were discussions and
then there was a live chat with Jimmy wales over Skype.
I would like to thank CSMIT for providing the venue, Wikimedia Foundation
for the merchandise and Manian for the cake.
I would also like to thank Manian / Ravishankar (Parithimathi) / Mahir /
Ravichandar for making this event happen.
I would get all the pictures into one place in commons and post the same.
There is a video of the book release / Jimmy chat is available here[1]
