Subject: eidete - a nice screencaster for gnu/linux
To: "ILUG-C" <ilugc(a)ae.iitm.ac.in>
Found a nice screencasting application for ubuntu - eidete
Though the gnome 3 has its inbuilt screen recording app using
crtl+alt+shift+r
it can record only video, not the audio.
I was looking for a decent screenrecorder with voice.
gtk-recordmydesktop is good. But, we have to configure the parameters to
get video without any scattering effects.
Tried eidete. It is so good. Video is stored as webm format. video/audio
quality is fine.
Check more about it here:
https://launchpad.net/eidetehttp://www.ubuntubuzz.com/2012/01/record-your-screen-activity-with-eidete.h…
Recorded a sample screencast - "intro to gnome 3" in Tamil.
check it here. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eg5h1-YgoJI
Now, you can create screencasts easily with Eidete.

Hi all
Russavia from English Wikipedia and Commons here
I am currently looking for some photographers in several countries who
might be able to assist me with taking photos from India which I am
requiring for
some articles I am working on. I need photos from Chennai, Kolkata,
Mumbai, Delhi and Thiruvananthapuram
Details of what I require can be found at
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Russavia/Required_photos#.C2.A0India
If anyone is able to help me, or if anyone knows of photographers who
can help, feel free to contact me on this email (and to pass my email
on), or i can be contacted at
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Russavia
In the event someone is able to help, and the photo subjects are
obscured, I may be able to organise with the local diplomatic mission
for inside access to take photos and the like, so this is an option if
anyone is willing.
Any help appreciated.
Cheers
Scotty (Russavia)
Deal all,
As a part of helping the community to reach out to more people apart from
the presentations, handouts, FAQs and mailing list support we also have
need for more visuals. Audio/Video clips containing Indian Wikipedians
sharing their message "I EDIT WIKIPEDIA" or "I EDIT AN INDIAN LANGUAGE
WIKIPEDIA" or "WIKIPEDIA IS HELPING ME DOCUMENTING MY HERITAGE" will create
impact among people and motivate them to contribute to Wikipedia. Many
people use Wikipedia in a daily basis without being aware of they can also
[Edit] it, social media, Youtube, mails containing link to such a video can
be used to reach this message to them. Moreover, such videos which are
already there in Outreach (outreach.wikimedia.org) Bookshelf might make
some people feel it's project being managed by some foreigners. Seeing some
real Indians editing Wikipedia with the Main page of an Indian language
background will definitely make this message clearer.
If there is a fairly good no of community members located in anywhere in
India (e.g Pune, Bangalore and Mumbai community) we can ask the community
members say it altogether aloud apart from one/two community members
speaking in their own language. I will be posting the details in the
community village pumps, you are allowed to send as many people's footage
as you can provided the video and audio quality are reasonable good. We
will be collecting footage from all the communities and do a post
production.

Dear all,
An introductory session about "Introduction to Wikipedia" at
"Kurukshetra2012", an international tech fest at College of Engineering
Guindy, Anna University, Chennai was attended by 2 wikipedians Subhashish
and Surya and 45 students. This event was intended to bring awareness among
students attending this fest about writing articles in the Wikipedia.
Subhashish took the audience through a
presentation<http://prezi.com/9lwwxhv7vqtg/introduction-to-wikipedia-the-free-encycloped…>explaining
basics of Wikipedia, how they can edit Wikipedia, what they can
edit in Wikipedia. Later on the students questioned about authenticity of
articles edited by multiple editors and there was a discussion regarding
that. Students also questioned if Wikipedia editing will help them to gain
some qualities and certifications which will help them during their campus
placements. There were also questions regarding Technical projects and
questions regarding jobs at Wikimedia. There were curious folks who
questioned abut the cause of blackout against SOPA and PIPA!
The questions asked by students had lot of valid points regarding
notability and authenticity of Wikipedia articles, there is need for
documentation of them in the form of FAQs, So, majority of the important
questions and answers to them would be documented in the meta page of Outreach
Program Handbook
FAQ<http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Meta/India_Program/Outreach_Progr…>
.
After the discussion Surya spoke about Tamil
Wikipedia<http://ta.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page>and the on going
Tamil
Media Contest<http://ta.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E0%AE%B5%E0%AE%B2%E0%AF%88%E0%AE%B5%E0%AE%BE%…>
.
Attendees socialized and had a group photo session after the event.

Hi all,
Wikimania is the annual international conference of Wikimedians
, jointly hosted by the local team ( usually local chapter) and the
Wikimedia Foundation.
The previous conferences were held in Frankfurt, Germany (2005), Boston,
USA (2006), Taipei, Taiwan (2007), Alexandria, Egypt (2008), Buenos
Aires, Argentina (2009), Gdan'sk, Poland (2010), and Haifa, Israel (2011).
This year, it is to be held in Washington DC, United States of America,
on July 12-14 , 2012. http://wikimania2012.wikimedia.org/wiki/Main_Page
<http://wikimania2012.wikimedia.org/wiki/Main_Page>
I have attended the Wikimanias in Gdansk and Haifa, along with several
other Wikipedians from India.
http://wiki.wikimedia.in/Wikimania2011
<http://wiki.wikimedia.in/Wikimania2011>
I highly recommend everyone to apply and attend Wikimania !
Like every year, The Wikimedia Foundation is offering a limited number
of scholarships to offset the cost of select individuals' attendance at
Wikimania.
Both full and partial scholarships are available for Wikimania 2012:
Full scholarships will award round trip travel, dorms
accommodations and registration.
Partial scholarships will subsidize up to 300EUR of travel expenses.
Scholarship recipients have to bear themselves the additional costs of
taxis, visa & travel agent charges etc.
More Information : http://wikimania2012.wikimedia.org/wiki/Scholarships
<http://wikimania2012.wikimedia.org/wiki/Scholarships>
Apply here : https://secure.wikidc.org/wm/schols/
<https://secure.wikidc.org/wm/schols/>
Deadline : *16 Feb 2012*
Around 30 % of the scholarship are allocated to Asia & Pacific, so there
are more chances of scholarship applications from India to be selected. :)
Please note that the selection is mostly based on the merit of the
applications.
One of the common mistakes that Wikimedians in India make is that we
aren't enough vocal of what we do. So please do write in detail about
your Wikimedia activities.
Please feel free to forward this to various language and city mailing
lists and encourage other Wikimedians to apply.
All the best wishes!

Tinu Cherian
