Dear colleagues in Bangladesh,
(I apologize for not being able to write this in Bangla. I encourage you
to translate this into Bangla if necessary!)
I work for the Wikimedia Foundation, and one of my roles is to run the
Wikimedia Grants program. Like other new chapters, Wikimedia Bangladesh is
encouraged to apply for a "start-up" grant to help fund some activities for
the first year or two of its existence. Instructions for submitting a
grant are available here: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Index [1]
However, some Wikimedia money is already in Bangladesh and is *available
for your use* -- it was granted to Messrs. Nasir Khan and Tanvir Rahman to
support their attendance at the WikiConference India event late last year.
For technical reasons, there is an amount of money left over from those
two travel grants, and instead of asking Nasir and Tanvir to wire the money
back to the Foundation (wasting some of our donor funds on commissions and
banking fees), we have decided to award the remaining funds to Wikimedia
Bangladesh, as an _advance_ on its first start-up grant (which Wikimedia
Bangladesh is yet to request).
The money itself is with Nasir and Tanvir, and as soon as Wikimedia
Bangladesh has its own bank account, they will deposit the remaining funds
there. The total amount was *67221.5* BDT, of which 17698.5 are with Nasir
and 49,523 are with Tanvir.
The funds are available for any mission-aligned[2] use Wikimedia Bangladesh
would like to put it to, and it is up to Wikimedia Bangladesh's board
(executive committee) and members to plan and approve the specific uses.
We do require a *public* report about how that money ends up getting used.
We recommend starting a page on the Meta-wiki as a sub-page of Wikimedia
Bangladesh's page[3], and tracking the use of the money there. Eventually,
when WMBD submits a start-up grant request, we can roll this report into
that start-up grant's eventual report. So far, Tanvir tells me he has
spent 5,500 BDT toward the Chittagong Unconference, so please record that
(including _what_, exactly, those 5500 BDT paid for) expense on this public
page.
I look forward to seeing more activity (the Chittagong Unconference sounds
like a success!) from Wikimedia Bangladesh, and would love to help in any
way I can.
Please don't hesitate to contact me with any questions, about the Wikimedia
Grants program or otherwise.
Cheers,
Asaf Bartov, WMF Grants Team

Hello everyone,
I am so pleased to announce that Wikimedia Bangladesh, with the help of
Independent University, Bangladesh, Chittagong, and Bangladesh Open Source
Network, organized the first Bangla Wikipedia Unconference 2012 [1] in
Chittagong [2] to promote Bangla Wikipedia [3] in Bangladesh. This outreach
event was held in 2 and 3 of March and was attended by around 300
participants. It was first big-level program of Wikimedia Bangladesh and it
was outside of the Dhaka (the capital) to focus on country-wide outreach.
We called it an "unconference" to give it a less formal look and to make
the appearance more welcoming.
This two days event was inaugurated by the Chittagong City Mayor and and in
the last it was attended by the Since and Technology minister of Bangladesh
Government. It was also attended by some other popular public figures,
writers, and university professors, and media personalties. During the
unconference we had events like workshops, photo exhibition, cultural
program, seminars, article writing contest, etc. We had several teams from
the schools, colleges, and universities in Chittagong as team participants.
The unconference was hosted by Chittagong campus of Independent University,
Bangladesh. You can see the some of the images of the events in the Commons
category [4].
Because of the presence of the popular public figures and government
officials, the event got a significant amount of media coverage in national
print and electronic media. We also even had billboards in the city's main
crossings to let people know about Bangla Wikipedia which was the main
purpose of this event and current strategic priority of Wikimedia
Bangladesh.
Wikimedia Bangladesh wants to thank everyone who supported us. We want to
thank our sponsors and donors who helped us to arrange this big event. We
want thank Wikimedia Foundation director Sue Gardner for her nice video
speech that we screened in the inaugural ceremony. And of course to our
participants, who eventually made this effort a success. And I apologize to
let you guys know about this event in late. We are still working on putting
everything on wiki.

Hi all,
For those that do not know me: I'm Lodewijk from the Netherlands, and I'm
(amongst other things) one of the people coordinating the Wiki Loves
Monuments initiatives on an international level. I have been involved in
the 2010 contest in the Netherlands and the 2011 in Europe.
Wiki Loves Monuments is a photo contest organized around cultural heritage
(buildings and other similar physical objects such as bridges etc that are
of cultural/historical relevance). It was organized last year in 18
countries in Europe, and this year we're seeing which countries outside
Europe might be interested too. It was suggested to us that the Bangladesh
community might be willing and able to join Wiki Loves Monuments this year.
How would you feel about this?
You can find more information about what Wiki Loves Monuments is all about
on
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2012/Documen…
and
the suggested Timeline gives you perhaps an impression of the work that
would be involved with this
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2012/Timeline .
You should however realize that Wiki Loves Monuments is organized
federatively, and that the national contests have a large degree of
independence. You would be organizing your own contest (with support and
help from the international team, for example on technical side) and you
should do, within a framework, do whatever works best in your country.
Would you perhaps be interested? If you have any questions, please let me
know.
Kind regards,
Lodewijk
