Hi all,
I wanted to make a proposal for the list: let's rename the Advocacy Advisory Group (advocacy_advisors@lists.wikimedia.org) to publicpolicy@lists.wikimedia.org. It's not a big change, but I think that it's more accurate since the list includes expert discussions of public policy that are not always limited to advocacy actions.
The proposal will only affect the name -- we will continue to keep the same focus and great discussions. We set up this mailing list nearly three years ago to provide an open venue for Wikimedians and others supporting the Wikimedia mission to discuss public policy and legislative developments around the world that could affect our movement's work. The Wikimedia Foundation also sends proposals to this list to get feedback on particular policy issues, following the Wikimedia Foundation Policy and Political Association Guideline ( https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Legal/Foundation_Policy_and_Political_Associ...). I've enjoyed all of the great discussions with the Wikimedia community, and particularly appreciate the great updates from the EU prepared by Dimi and others.
If there are no concerns about changing the name, we can set it up next Friday (August 14). We will update the Policy and Political Association Guideline to continue to refer to this list.
As Yana, Geoff, and I presented at Wikimania ( https://wikimania2015.wikimedia.org/wiki/Submissions/Amplify_Free_Knowledge_...), we are also working on a site communicating significant public policy positions. That site will also invite people to sign up to this list to discuss public policy issues that affect the Wikimedia projects.
I think the renaming makes good sense. "Public policy" is the standard label for the category in which the issues here belong.

I am already on some other mailing list that use the "publicpolicy" name, so the terms becomes pretty generic. At least this one stood out (and I live it having it in my "main" inbox).
I think that the challenge of renaming the archives (so that old links work etc.), reconfiguring filters for those who use them is not worth really worth it.
I really love gmane.org, the alternative archive of the mailing lists:
http://news.gmane.org/gmane.org.wikimedia.advocacy-advisors
They do not support renaming (so the list will stay under the old name) and it would be good to take extra steps so that the gmane.org archive continues to work, if the name will be changed indeed.
I believe that technical issues can be overcome (tech guys did excellent work before during the famous foundation-l move), but I really don't mind using the old name, as when somebody tells me "remeber that post on the public policy mailing list?" I don't have to ask "which one?".

Apparently, the rename happened. https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/publicpolicy needs a description; https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Mailing_lists/Overview was updated by Varnent but would benefit from a more understandable description, too. (By the way, I've never followed this list because since 2012 it never had a suitable name or description.)
The welcome message needs update, see below. I also don't understand why such info is kept hidden in mailman configuration: it should be a wiki page; if it is, it should be linked.

P.s.: I think the idea of yet another website, outside our wikis, is catastrophic.

Welcome to the Publicpolicy@lists.wikimedia.org mailing list! Welcome to the Advocacy Advisors Group!
The purpose of this mailing list is to provide an open venue where anyone can participate in lively discussions about political and legislative developments around the world that could affect the Wikimedia mission. If the need arises, the Wikimedia Foundation will also seek discussion and input from the members of this list regarding potential policy or political associations with third parties, in accordance with the Wikimedia Foundation Policy and Political Association Guideline.
Advocacy Advisors Group Instructions & Guidelines
* Anyone can join or leave the group anytime. You can subscribe or unsubscribe at : https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/advocacy_advisors.
