There is a Grant Proposal from a couple of weeks ago that is relevant to this discussion. "Wikidata items for sources, such as a journal article, contain metadata that could be used to generate a citation from that item to be used on a wiki."

    Having been steeped (if not petrified) in MARC21 for decades, I

    attempt a mapping to the {{cite}} templates. It would cover books,
    music, movies, possibly photographs, and maybe art works.

    Note that there is a mapping in OpenLibrary from their books data
    (derived from MARC but not in MARC), and with a single click you
    get the
    filled in book citation template for the book. I use this a lot.
    Some of
    us have been wishing that OCLC WorldCat would do the same. It

makes sense to have the mapping happen at the discovery point.
