Dear Librarians and Library Lovers:
#1Lib1Ref
<https://www.facebook.com/hashtag/1lib1ref?source=feed_text&epa=HASHTAG> is
happening again from January 15th through February 5th! Imagine a world in
which every librarian added 1 more reference to Wikipedia...
We want you to make #1Lib1Ref your own! Adapt the subject area or type for
your community, region, and language. Run events when it works for you.
Also, try Citation Hunt’s new “Intersections” feature to preload topics
that you select and care about (http://citationhunt.org

Hello everyone,
Exciting times: the first feature of Structured Data on Wikimedia Commons -
multilingual captions - can now be beta tested. See below for further
explanation.
After the deployment of captions, the other functionalities of Structured
Commons (depicts + other statements from Wikidata) will be added in the
next months.
Looking forward to your tests and feedback! Sandra

Subject: [Commons-l] Structured data on Commons: Multilingual captions beta
testing
To: Wikimedia Commons Discussion List <commons-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>, <
wikidata(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
The Structured Data on Commons team has begun beta testing of the first
feature, multilingual file captions, and all community members are invited
to test it out. Captions is based on designs discussed with the community
[1][2] and the team is looking forward to hearing about testing.
***If all goes well during testing, captions will be turned on for Commons
around the second week of January, 2019.***
Multilingual captions are plain text fields that provide brief, easily
translatable details of a file in a way that is easy to create, edit, and
curate. Captions are added during the upload process using the
UploadWizard, or they can be added directly on any file page on Commons.
Adding captions in multiple languages is a simple process that requires
only a few steps.
The details:
-
There is [[mw:Help:File_captions|a help page available on how to use
multilingual file captions]]
-
Testing will take place on Beta Commons. If you don’t yet have an
account set up there, you’ll need one. (direct link:
https://commons.wikimedia.beta.wmflabs.org/wiki/Main_Page )
-
Beta Commons is a testbed, and not configured exactly like the real
Commons site, so expect to see some discrepancies with UI elements like
search
-
Structured Data introduces the potential for many important page changes
to happen at once, which could flood the recent changes list. Because of
this, Enhanced Recent Changes
<https://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Help:Enhanced_recent_changes> is enabled
as it currently is at Commons, but with some user interface changes.
-
Feedback and commentary on the file caption functionality are welcome
and encouraged on the discussion page for this post:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons_talk:Structured_data/Beta_captio…
-
Some testing has already taken place and the team are aware of some
issues. A list of known issues can be seen below
-
If you discover a bug/issue that is not covered in the known issues,
please file a ticket on Phabricator and tag it with the “Multimedia” tag.
Use [
https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/maniphest/task/edit/form/1/?projects=mult…
this link to file a new task] already tagged with "Multimedia."
Known issues:
-
Search is not currently working on Beta Commons. Search is not needed
for testing captions, but service should be restored soon.
-
Language name display inconsistencies in multilingual file captions -
https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T209380
-
Language names for multilingual File captions can run into the caption
value in the mobile view - https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T209333
-
Deleting a caption field that has text that exceeds the limit does not
re-enable the "publish" button -
https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T209329
-
"Edit" tab for past revisions should be "restore" -
https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T209187
-
When using the back button, recently added captions sometimes don't
display in Chrome - https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T208894
-
File Captions can't be edited on mobile browsers -
https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T208993
-
Wrong font weight for some language labels on SDC captions box -

Dear Wiki & Libraries enthusiasts,
I have a huge favor to ask of everyone in this mailing list --
TLDR: *please fill out* *this questionnaire
<https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/%E2%80%8Bhttps://goo.gl/forms/WMFb6j2mpG2H…!!>!*
And now in more details:
As some of you may know, I'm a PhD candidate at the School of Education,
Tel Aviv University, and my research focuses on Wikidata as a learning
platform.
To succeed in my research, I need data about how users (especially
librarians) interact with Wikidata, so it would be of great help if you
could take the time to fill out the questionnaire linked above.
It's estimated that it should take between 15-30 minutes, depending on how
detailed your answers would be.
I'm striving for at least 100 replies, but this is one of those cases of
"the more, the merrier", so every person filling it out is of huge help.
Please feel free to ping me privately or send me an email if you have any
questions, or if you are willing to participate in a follow up
interview (there's
also an option to mark that in the questionnaire itself).
Thanks in advance for considering filling it out. I will be forever grateful
to anyone who can help and promise to update you on my progress. :)
Cheers,
Shani.

Hello all!
tl;dr Do you work for a cultural institution and have you contributed media
files from your collections to Wikimedia Commons? And/or are you interested
in crowdsourced metadata around your collections? Then consider filling in
this short survey.
Or are you a Wikimedia volunteer working on GLAM-Wiki projects? Then please
bring this survey to the attention of the GLAMs you work with! :-)
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScMnowgs8Zs_Qcbkdk20Sxk0ake0gZrQP8…
The questionnaire will take approximately 10 minutes to complete.
A bit more context:
Many Galleries, Libraries, Archives, and Museums (GLAMs) upload media to
Wikimedia Commons. These media files help to enrich the experience of
Wikipedia articles and increase the reach of heritage collections. The
metadata of these media files are often augmented and enriched by the
volunteers of Wikimedia projects. These enrichments often do not find their
way back to the contributing GLAMs.
The Swedish National Heritage Board (www.raa.se), in collaboration with
museums in Sweden, are researching and prototyping a tool that makes it
easier to extract this enriched metadata. This questionnaire indexes the
use of third-party metadata in collection management systems in order to
determine the scope of the tool that is going to be developed.
The questionnaire will take approximately 10 minutes to fill in. If you
have additional information or suggestions feel free to mail the researcher
(Maarten Zeinstra) at info(a)ip-squared.com.
*Privacy statement*
The information that you contribute to this questionnaire will only be used
for research purposes for the duration of the project. We will not keep or
distribute information about you or your institute unless you have given us
prior consent to do so.
This project is closely related to Structured Data on Wikimedia Commons (
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Structured_data). From early
2019, files on Wikimedia Commons can be enhanced with multilingual,
structured data from Wikidata (www.wikidata.org). The APIs of Wikimedia
Commons will become more refined as well, which makes it easier to feed
back improved metadata in a systematic way.
See project info from the Swedish Heritage Board:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Commons_Data_Roundtripping
Many thanks in advance for your help and input! :-)
With kind regards, Sandra

Hello everyone!
tl;dr Please fill in this short survey about how you like your GLAM-Wiki
documentation!
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdWcLNO6dyM11usIet29bGhEPtbA-01q04…
In 2019, the documentation for batch uploads of files to Wikimedia Commons
will be improved, on the occasion of Structured Data on Wikimedia Commons.
Before we start working on this, the GLAM team at the Wikimedia Foundation
wants to understand better which types of documentation you already use,
and how you like to learn new GLAM-Wiki skills and knowledge. To learn more
about this, I have created a short survey, which you can access here:
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdWcLNO6dyM11usIet29bGhEPtbA-01q04…
The survey runs until November 30, 2018. It is most relevant for beginning
and active GLAM-Wiki volunteers, and for GLAM staff members who have (some)
hands-on experience with Wikimedia projects.

Colleagues,
I'd like to call your attention to a draft white paper that is out from the Association of Research Libraries, that looks at the opportunity space for academic libraries and Wikidata and Wikibase. This comes from the convergence of interest in linked open data for both library discovery systems, and advancing a diversity and inclusion agenda in the cultures of both libraries and Wikimedia projects. We are inviting comment on the paper until the end of the month. Please read and give us your feedback!

Save the date for the 2019 LD4 Conference: May 10-11, in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, at the Martin Conference Center<http://www.theconfcenter.hms.harvard.edu/> at Harvard Medical School. The LD4P initiative<http://www.ld4p.org/>, supported by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, is hosting this conference to bring together those who are passionate about the adoption of linked data in libraries.
We’re seeking volunteers to join the Program Committee and set the themes, goals, format, and content of the meeting, from the overall vision down to the details of the two-day agenda. Our beautiful venue accommodates up to 150 people, with flexibility for multiple simultaneous activities. The possibilities are wide open for the direction and nature of this meeting: What would be most valuable to you in a community meeting? How can this community gathering best advance the adoption of linked data in libraries? Join the Program Committee and shape an event you want to be part of!
To be on the Program Committee, you should plan on attending the conference in Boston on May 9 and 10, 2019, and be available for bi-weekly teleconference calls beginning in December. (Program Committee members will receive a stipend to offset the cost of attendance.)
Fill in this short form (https://goo.gl/forms/fEuYxOP4AkiV6dH93) by November 20 to join the Program Committee.
For those not joining the Program Committee, keep an eye out for a call for proposals and other announcements about the 2019 LD4 Conference!
