Hello all,
Are you interested in the future of Wikipedia and Wikidata?
Have you heard the buzz around "Abstract Wikipedia" and want to learn more?
Confused about the differences between "Abstract Wikipedia",
"Wikifunctions" and "WikiLambda"?
If the answer to any of these questions is "Yes", then you should read
more. [image: 🙂]
*What?*
My academic course at Tel Aviv University, "From Web 2.0 to Web 3.0, from
Wikipedia to Wikidata", is coming to an end soon and next week we will be
closing the Wikidata module of the course in a special celebration,
hosting Denny
Vrandečić (initiator of Wikidata, and more recently the director of
"Abstract Wikipedia", or rather "Wikifunctions").
To properly celebrate, Denny & I have designed a two-parts "party" for my
students, which includes a pre-recorded interview
<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0GjNkrvT7Yc&ab_channel=ShaniEvenstein>,
and then *a live Q & A session with Denny during the course hour*.
And the good news is -- *you are all invited!*
*Where?*
*1) Pre-recorded interview* (available here - https://youtu.be/0GjNkrvT7Yc
<https://l.facebook.com/l.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fyoutu.be%2F0GjNkrvT7Yc%3Ffbcli…>)
-
In the interview we discussed the some of the challenges we have in
Wikipedia and Wikidata, and how they brought about the idea of "Abstract
Wikipedia"; What is the difference between "Abstract Wikipedia",
"Wikifunctions" and "WikiLambda"; What is the current state of the project;
and how it all ties to the current Internet Ecosystem and things like AI
and Machine Learning.
*2) Q & A live session - *
*Next Monday, June 7th, at 15:00 Israel time (12:00 UTC),* I will be
hosting Denny in my course for a 45 mins Q & A session via Zoom.
This part of class will be open and anyone interested in this topic, and
you are welcome to either *join us live*, *send questions* to Denny (after
watching the pre-recorded interview) *or watch later*.
*How?*
If you are interested to join, *please write me an email *(simply reply
privately to this email) *by Sunday June 6th at 20:00 UTC*, and I will send
you the zoom link (this is to avoid Zoombombing).
If you are unable to participate live, but still want to engage, *feel free
to send in questions *(again replying to this email privately).
The session will also be recorded, so if you cannot make it to the live
session, you will be able to watch later on YouTube (I will be sharing the
recording later).
Looking forward to your questions and to seeing you next week,
Shani.
*Please excuse any cross-posting*
Dear colleagues,
We hope that you will consider participating in our research survey.
This survey is for members of GLAM institutions that have begun to
contribute to open knowledge projects (Wikidata, Wikipedia, SNAC, etc.).
The purpose of the survey is to learn about policies and practices, or lack
thereof, GLAM staff are following around contributing demographic
information for living people (e.g., Sex or Gender, Ethnic Group, Race,
Sexual Orientation, etc.) to open knowledge projects. Information collected
from this survey will inform an ethical investigation into issues
surrounding these practices.
The results will be used to write a journal article on ethics and open
knowledge projects, and may also be shared via conferences or other
writings. Your participation in this survey is voluntary. You may choose
not to participate. If you decide to participate in this research survey,
you may withdraw at any time. All personal information will be
confidential. We will make our best effort to protect your individual
survey responses so that no one will be able to connect your responses with
you or your organization.
The three principal investigators working on this project are Greta Kuriger
Suiter (gsuiter(a)mit.edu), Kurt Hanselman (khanselman(a)sdsu.edu), and Nerissa
Lindsey (nlindsey(a)sdsu.edu). If you have any questions about this survey,
feel free to contact us.
Completing this survey should take approximately 10 to 15 minutes. The
survey will remain open until June 4th, 2021. Thank you for your
participation.

(Please forgive the crossposting.)
Best regards,
Federico
== Engineer position in the Valda team ==
Valda is hiring an engineer to work on the [https://dissem.in/ Dissemin]
platfom for a two-year position at [https://www.ens.psl.eu/ École
normale supérieure]. Dissemin is a tool to detect research articles
behind paywalls and to help their authors upload them in an open
repository. Dissemin is an [https://gitlab.com/dissemin/dissemin
open-source project] with various contributors, organized as a
[https://association.dissem.in/index.html.en non-profit].
=== Profile of the candidate ===
The applicant should be familiar with or ready to learn the following
technologies:
* the Python programming language;
* the Django Web application framework;
* the PostgreSQL database management system;
* RESTful Web APIs;
* processing of large datasets.
The applicant should be familiar with an open-source development
workflow (basics of Git, merge requests, proficiency in technical
English) and willing and interested to work in an academic environment
on a project related to academic publishing. The candidate should be
able to work autonomously, in interaction with a remote team of developers.
The applicant should hold a Master or engineering diploma in a field
related to computer science or computer engineering. Candidates holding
a PhD on a relevant topic are also welcome, with the experience of the
PhD recognized and useful for the project.
The applicant need not be French-speaking.
=== Tasks ===
The role of the engineer will be to turn Dissemin from a
proof-of-concept work into a production-ready tool, in particular to be
used by French researchers to help them deposit their works on
open-access platforms, as required by their employers or funders. Some
specific tasks include:
* day-to-day management of the Dissemin platform and bug fixing;
* integration of [https://www.crossref.org/ Crossref] and
[https://www.base-search.net/ BASE] data, in connection with
[https://hal.archives-ouvertes.fr/ HAL];
* optimization of the data ingestion from [https://www.crossref.org/
Crossref] and [https://www.base-search.net/ BASE];
* possible migration of the platform to a different hosting and
architecture;
* interaction with the Valda research team on subjects related to the
analysis of the scientific corpus (e.g., possible co-supervision of
Master's students).
=== Work conditions ===
The engineer will be hosted at École normale supérieure in the 5th
district of Paris and employed by ENS on a one-year contract renewable
once, for a total planned duration of two years.
For a full-time position, the work week is 37.5 hours (flexible hours),
with 49 vacation days yearly; part-time positions can be discussed. The
engineer will work under the supervision of the head of the Valda team,
[https://pierre.senellart.com/ Pierre Senellart]. The salary will follow
the ENS salary scale for technical employees (typically 26 to 36 k€
gross yearly salary depending on experience and degree).
The position is expected to start at the earliest in June 2021 and at
the latest in January 2022.
=== Work environment ===
The work will be conducted within a dynamic research team, also in
interaction with the [https://prairie-institute.fr/ PRAIRIE institute]
for artificial intelligence research in Paris. The engineer will be
encouraged to participate in the life of the team (research seminars,
discussions with PhD candidates and researchers, etc.). This position
can also serve as a gateway for applicants considering a PhD thesis in
related areas. All development will be open-source. Contributing to
third-party open-source projects useful to Dissemin is also encouraged.
=== Diversity ===
ENS is an equal-opportunity employer, with ENS and Dissemin committed to
diversity and professional equality in terms of gender, handicap, and
origin. For this reason, applicants need not mention any personal
information (such as age, family situation, photo) on their application.
=== How to apply? ===
Candidates can submit their application (CV, motivation letter,
references, link to past projects) as a single PDF document to
hiring(a)dissem.in . Applications will be evaluated on a rolling basis.
Early applications are recommended.
=== Acknowledgment ===
This project is funded with support from the French National Fund for
Open Science.
Hello Librarians and library lovers,
(Sorry for cross posting)
>From May 15th to June 5th 2021, we will be joining together once again to
continue providing reliable and factual information to the world through
Wikipedia and the #1lib1ref campaign. To participate is easy, simply add a
citation to Wikipedia!![1]
*May Experiments *
This May we are focused on:
-
growing the campaign in East and South East Asia with local affiliates
-- if you want to help contact Venus Lui via (vlui-ctr(a)wikimedia.org) or
me.
-
working closely with AfLIA to sustain our relationship with the
Librarians network in Africa. Last year the participation from African
Librarians was overwhelming, recording about 84% of the total numbers of
edits attained (33,257). This surged our campaign to a staggering increase
of 394%YoY for the May campaign.[2]
-
Supporting our long standing partner for the campaign, IFLA as they
explore citations on Wikidata [3][4]
How can you engage?
We invite you to engage in three ways:
-
Make an edit - Participate globally and virtually by adding citations to
Wikipedia.[5]
-
Organise - Lead a community activity or event in your library, country
or region.[6]
-
Amplify - Share and just keep sharing the campaign within your networks
and help us reach out to library and research communities around the
world.[7]
Join local events or editathons
If you are organising an activity virtually or providing a space to teach
or train people with an interest in the campaign, please add your event(s)
here.[8] In light of the pandemic, we strongly encourage virtual activities
and advise everyone to follow the WHO health guidelines.[9] If restrictions
have been lifted in your country and are considering organising in-person
events, kindly follow the Wikimedia COVID risk assessment for events.[10]
Ensure all your contributions are recorded by using the #1Lib1Ref hashtag
in your edit summary! Add your activity to the campaign dashboard to help
us track the activities happening across the globe.[11] This is very
important for us to monitor the reach and success of the initiative.
Learn more in our office hour
Join the next campaigns office hour on Thursday 13th May at 3:00pm UTC,
where we will share about strategies in Asia and Africa, under the
theme “exploring
regional or thematic approaches to campaigns in tackling topics of interest
”.[12]
Please tell your library, researcher and knowledge-loving friends about
#1Lib1Ref in May. We need everyone's help to make Wikipedia more reliable!
You can join the 1Lib1Ref community via the Libraries (
libraries(a)lists.wikimedia.org), and 1Lib1Ref (1lib1ref(a)lists.wikimedia.org)
mailing lists, or by joining the Wikimedia + Libraries User Group.[13]
