I've been surprised by the success of this 7 min animation on Dewey
codes, from the Finnish libraries (kirjastokaista.fi):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tF342znnAsM
It's been on the front page of YouTube in Finland for several days now,
even as top 1 trending video. It reached 200k views and counting.
As far as I know, no "serious" video on Wikipedia or other Wikimedia
projects has reached such a virality. (Although I see a Stephen Colbert
and an alltime10s video with 1M views each.) Maybe we can learn
something from it?
The video is part of a series by this Tuomas Toivainen:

2 weeks are left to propose content for the 2020 LD4 Conference! Wiki related proposals are warmly welcome at this library conference!
The conference will be held May 13-14 at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas, USA with a focus on learning concrete ways that linked data benefits GLAM institutions and discovering pathways to participation in linked data. By bringing together a broad range of perspectives, and centering diversity, equity, inclusion, and ethics in our discussions, we will create a community of practice for linked data in libraries.
Thanks to the generous support of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, a limited number of stipends at three award levels are available to make participation possible for those who would not otherwise be able to attend:
* Registration fee ($100 US) waived
* Up to $500 US of travel expenses covered plus registration fee ($100 US) waived
* Up to $1250 US of travel expenses covered plus registration fee ($100 US) waived
Stipend applications will be reviewed by the Program Committee and recipients selected based on merit and need.
We are accepting proposals for content in a variety of formats and especially encourage proposals (conference or pre-conference) from participants from groups and regions that are traditionally underrepresented in conferences related to linked data in libraries and other cultural heritage organizations, as well as proposals from early career professionals. Please see the full Call for Proposals<https://sites.google.com/stanford.edu/ld42020/call-for-proposals> for additional details.
The Program Committee will select proposals and contact all applicants by February 21st. For those interested in attending without proposing a session, a separate call for participation will be announced in late February.

Happy New Year! The Wikipedia & Education User Group invites you to attend
our next Open Meeting via Zoom on *Tuesday, January 28, from 18:00 UTC to
19:30 UTC*.
As usual for our Open Meetings, we will provide updates from the Wikipedia
& Education board, then leave most of the time for our guest speakers. This
month, we're thrilled to have featured speakers from Israel and Ghana join
us to speak about Wikidata in education and outside-the-classroom social
impact from Wikimedia projects.
*Shani Evenstein Sigalov* is one of the leading innovators in the Wikimedia
& Education movement globally. In addition to her work as a researcher and
free knowledge advocate, Shani has taught groundbreaking courses on
Wikipedia and Wikidata, and she'll be presenting in this meeting on her
Wikidata work. A founding board member of the Wikipedia & Education User
Group, Shani resigned to take on even greater responsibility as a Wikimedia
Foundation Trustee. We're particularly excited to welcome her back as a
guest speaker!
*Andrews Lartey*, Project Manager for Growing Open and Eco-friendly Skills
for the Youth (GOES), will speak about how Wikimedia Projects can be used
outside the classroom to create social impact (Industry 4.0 skills
acquisition, circular economy and zero hunger). Andrews Lartey will present
on how GOES, through community school farms is creating social impact in
Ghana, the global effect and how various institutions and individuals can
support the project.
The meeting will be hosted via this link on January 28:
https://zoom.us/j/580872511
This may be of interest to Wikimedians too!

To: <open-glam(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Hi everyone,
The call for applications for the Creative Commons Global Summit are
finally open - you can either apply for a scholarship or submit a
presentation here:
https://creativecommons.org/2020/01/22/cc-global-summit-proposals-and-schol…
.
Deadline for applications is February 12, 2020.
This year (as last year) there's a GLAM track. This year there's a an
invitation to submit proposals that address the topics and issues outlined
in the tracks below *with a focus on actionable insights and outcomes*,
from case studies to workshops and storytelling sessions.
The Open GLAM track invites proposals that address the following:
*Open Galleries, Libraries, Archives, and Museums – Improving and expanding
open access to cultural heritage*
GLAM institutions are a core part of how we understand heritage and
creativity. Open licensing is a key part to make cultural data and content
available in an equitable and accessible way. This track explores Open GLAM
today and discusses how communities active within the open movement can
inspire and inform mindful, high-quality, and sustainable open access to
cultural heritage.
The Summit will take place 14-16 May 2020, in Lisbon, Portugal. More
information here: https://summit.creativecommons.org/
See you in Lisbon!

Interesting new update from the UN libraries. Might have a Wikidata

Subject: [IFLA-L] UN Library launches new linked data services platform:
metadata.un.org
To: ifla-l(a)iflalists.org <ifla-l(a)iflalists.org>
The Dag Hammarskjöld Library is pleased to announce the launch of their new
linked data services platform: metadata.un.org. Linked data is structured
data interlinked with other data, making it more discoverable and
searchable through semantic queries.
Metadata.un.org currently hosts the Library’s UNBIS Thesaurus
<http://metadata.un.org/thesaurus/?lang=en> and the Department of Economic
and Social Affairs’ taxonomy of Sustainable Development Goals
<http://metadata.un.org/sdg/?lang=en> identifiers. More linked data
services and taxonomies will be hosted on metadata.un.org as they become
available.
The UNBIS Thesaurus is a database of controlled vocabulary used by UN
programmes, funds, and regional commissions to describe the UN’s published
output (parliamentary documents, publications, reports, etc.). The new
platform provides a revamped interface with increased functionality in the
six official UN languages. Its controlled vocabulary makes subject
searches possible by identifying materials on the same concept
consistently, despite terminology changes over time.
DESA’s SDG Taxonomy was produced in collaboration with groups from across
the UN system. They developed a system of Internationalized Resource
Identifiers (IRIs) for the SDGs, the related targets and indicators,
related entities linking to UNBIS Thesaurus terms
<http://metadata.un.org/sdg/1?lang=en>, as well as the SDG Interface
Ontology, maintained by UN Environment. These common identifiers are
deployed to provide a key element of infrastructure that will allow UN
system organizations and relevant stakeholders to map their SDG resources
to the growing pool of knowledge about the SDGs available on the semantic
web.
We welcome feedback <http://metadata.un.org/feedback?lang=en> on this new
service.
