The value of linking libraries and Wikipedia

Friends, I received this heartwarming message from a cataloger this morning, who writes: "So, I had an Arabic name to enter into a record as part of a note, and I wasn't confident about the diacritics. So, I look in the authority file to temporarily download it, copy the form of the name, and then move on. Couldn't find the name in OCLC. Look in Wikipedia under his common name - bingo. Even better, Wikipedia has a link to VIAF, double bingo! With the authorized form from VIAF, I could readily find the record in OCLC (I was tempted to copy the name form directly from VIAF, but didn't want to push my luck.) The miracles of an interconnected bibliographic dataverse!" I asked if I could share with the Wikipedia community, and he added: "By all means! The name in question was Aziz Ali al-Misri. The corresponding Wikipedia article is at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/'Aziz_'Ali_al-Misri Thank you for your efforts! It made my work in my catalog possible!!" The Wikipedia link was added by the VIAFbot, written by Max Klein, Andrew Gray and others. Huzzah! Let's hear it for connections! Open Access Wikipedia Challenge on P2PU for Wikipedia Loves Libraries

Hello All, Happy open access week, to celebrate I created the Open Access Wikipedia Challenge on P2PU [1]. The challenge is to embed media that was harvested from Open Access journals in Wikipedia, and I created a special edition barnstar for completing it [2]. This challenge is totally friendly to newbies and librarians as it includes over 1 hour of 6 screencast tutorial videos that explain every detail right from the account creation, to transclusion, and each module has waypoint challenges. The Princeton University Archives is hosting a Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon on the theme of Princeton Athletics. WHO: Interested University community members (students, graduate students, professors, staff, and community). No prior Wikipedia experience is needed. Limited to 15 participants; please RSVP before Monday, 15 October 2012. WHAT: Creating and expanding existing Wikipedia pages about the history of Princeton University Athletics at Princeton. Participants will set up individual Wikipedia accounts, learn how to write an article, and then use University Archives resources to write and edit articles. WHEN: Friday, 19 October 2012, 12:30 P.M.-4:15 P.M. Lunch and snacks will be provided. WHERE: Weiss Lounge, Seeley G. Mudd Manuscript Library (next to Sherrerd Hall and across from the Friend Center). Wikipedia MiniCourse on P2PU: "Loves Libraries Edition"

Open Access Week is upon us, I have been brainstorming about how to do something large for Wikipedia Loves Libraries this Open Access Week. One such idea that I've discussed with Creative Commons is to construct a mini-course on P2PU (peer to peer University). For an example of such a pre-existing short form course see: https://p2pu.org/en/schools/school-of-webcraft/sets/webmaking-101/ The way I imagined it would be a 4 parter: 1. Learning about talk, history, and users. 2. Learning about wikitext, citations, infoboxes, 3. Challenge, add citations and infoboxes, 4. Extra challenge, upload to wikisource. Is there anybody else that would want to help construct or promote this course for the end of October? Or have any input on using the site, format or content?
