I've entered in a project with American Express' Member's Project Contest
for an Online Free University. This is meant to be an adjunct to traditional
post secondary education methods. If awarded, it could benefit Wikimedia
foundation greatly.

Imagine how a $1.5 million dollar grant advance Wikiversity. This is a
dream that I'd like to get off the ground. I believe this is something that
you ultimately want Wikiversity to be like, and this would be a magnificent
short cut.
This project is very much in keeping with the goals of Wikiversity. I'm
pretty sure that Amex would actually have you assist, if not lead, in the
project.

Dear Friend
Imagine a world where everyone, anywhere, can go online, and for free, get
the equivalent of a college education. How would that effect society? Could
it have an effect on world peace, on solving our problems, and making this
world a better place? Such an educational portal has been my dream for a
long time, and with your help, I believe that we can make it a reality.
I don't want your money. This is not a request for anything other than a
small moment of your time. With your help, I'm hoping that I can receive
funding for this project. I recently submitted my proposal, "Worldwide Free
University" to the American Express Members Project. and with your support
it could get funding . There are only about 1,000 projects now, so odds are
pretty good. First prize is $1.5 million, second price is $500,000, and
there are 5 remaining prizes available, each for $100,000. I know that I can
make significant progress on this project with even the smallest budget.
Amex chooses who does the project, and I'd believe Wikiversity would be one
of the groups participating.
I've outlined my proposal at
<http://smartchive.com/lists/lt.php?id=fUUICQcJAlEARVADVx4JBFJR>
http://www.membersproject.com/project/view/KHB7EG
I also have a video on YouTube, which outlines this project.

The video is about six minutes long, if you don't have that time, please
download a copy of the PowerPoint at

September, 2008 is the last day to nominate this project.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Hello,
one of our community projects is being revived: "Wikiversity the Movie"
http://en.wikiversity.org/wiki/Wikiversity_the_Movie
The new time frame is: 15th August, 2009 (our next Wikiversity Day).
This should leave us enough time for the preparations.
initial phase: searching participants for the learning project
Anyone wanna help (creative ideas, production, script, ...) ?

Hi folks,
We have created the multilingual dissambiguation to the International Year
of Languages (2008) on Beta:
http://beta.wikiversity.org/wiki/International_Year_of_Languages
This follows after my post:
http://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikiversity-l/2008-August/000470.html,
which passed and was probably not understood. Feel free to send comments to
this idea, correct existing language translations or translate (and link)
into your language.
This multilingual disimbiguation is to have - on one page in different
languages links to the projects based on language education and research on
each Wikiversity project (might include links to incubated projects of
different Wikiversities (e.g. within Wikiversity Beta)) and multilingualism
broad Wikimedia projects. "An easy way to find a course of a foregin
language in your mother tongue."
There is also the idea to ask UNESCO as a cooridinator of activities around
IYoL to link this page and provide the wide range of wv courses and
multilingual issues to the audience surrounded around UNESCO and all people
linked from IYoL main page. Other idea is, that the people coming to this
may support incubating language mutations or make a seedling of new language
communities.
Regards,
Juan
Hi folks,
I would like to inform you about the disambiguation and promotional pages we
have created on cs.wv adressing aims of the International Year of Languages:
http://cs.wikiversity.org/wiki/Mezin%C3%A1rodn%C3%AD_rok_jazyk%C5%AF
"The year 2008 was declared the International Year of Languages by the
United Nations, in a resolution passed on 16 May 2007. The Year is intended
to address issues of linguistic diversity (in the context of cultural
diversity), respect for all languages, and multilingualism." (International
Year of Languages. (2008, July 19). In *Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia*.
Retrieved 09:53, August 9, 2008, from
http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=International_Year_of_Languages&o…
)
The aim of the page on Wikiversity is to collect all courses and reasearch
project addressing language teaching and research, multilingualism and
culture diversity. It has to promote also other courses in the area. The
participatns may advertise the page, animate new people and groups
interested in the language education; organise conferences, workshops, etc.
What is on this page:
http://cs.wikiversity.org/wiki/Mezin%C3%A1rodn%C3%AD_rok_jazyk%C5%AF
*introduction, about the Year and about the Page
*aims of the project (disambiguation, promotion, advertising, support for
other Wikimedia projects in the area, off-line meetings, make a booklet and
evaluation on the end of the year)
*volunteers
*links to offical projects coordinated by UNESCO
*links to the wikiversity projects
*other projects (usually off-line/live)
