A planning wiki for this would be awesome. If it's cool with everyone we can kick start this during tomorrow's WikiSaturday.
As for the other campuses, Strathmore and probably Nairobi uni should be available.
Regards, Alex.

Hi Asaf,
It would be great to have you around.I personally think your visit and talks will go along way in revitalizing WMKE like Tings visit did. About your schedule,
==Logistics== I will be arriving around Aug 14th or 15th, and leaving around Aug 19th or 20th. I will definitely be in Nairobi, and possibly also visit Mombasa.
==Meetup== I'd like to meet as many Wikimedia Kenya members (non-members also welcome!) as possible. If there's a lot of interest in Mombasa, I'll try to have a meetup and workshop there too. All we need for the meetup is a room large enough to contain all who would want to come, and reasonably quiet so we can hear ourselves talking.
I would suggest we visit one of the campuses in Nairobi and combine this aspect with the outreach aspect.You/we will have the opportuinity to recruit and spur interest in Campus.Since in JKUAT(my campus) wew would probably be having our exams,I would suggest either Strathmore,KU and Nairobi University.
Wifi and a projector would be a plus,we as WMKE have 2projectors so this solved..:-)
==Workshop==
- Motivating Volunteers: how to attract, care for, feed, and keep
volunteers; how to handle crises
I would personally vouch to have this talk to the entire WMKE members.
==Public speaking== If there's any opportunity to have a small public outreach event, maybe on one (or more) campus(es), I'd be delighted to appear as guest speaker on behalf of the Foundation, and either give a general introduction to Wikipedia or (if one of you would like to give the Wikipedia intro) I might give a talk about Wikimedia as an international movement and share some of our inspiring work around the world.
I think we did this with Tings visit with one of the campuses and it would be great to have a follow-up with the same campus (KU) or do it in another campus.
If your group has the time and interest in beginning to organize such events, please let me know and we can begin planning at once.
Definitely we(I) am interested in such an event and given the time-span and the schedule,I think we need to start planning and doing all the logistics early enough.Sending invites to campuses,meeting/inviting government and other companies, and general publicity all need enough time.
I thus urge my fellow volunteers to give there take/input on this and we start preparations ASAP.
Thanks once again. Regards,

I'm pretty sure many of those reading this still do not have user accounts on the Wiki. If that's you, PLEASE contact me or Abbas and state the username you want (your Wikipedia name would be best, if you have one), and we'll set you up!
So yeah, let's take the planning to the wiki.

Hello, I have contemplated about the timing of Asaf's visit and I would like to ask,if possible can it be postponed to early September? Which is two weeks after the current dates.
My reasons being;
* We at JKUAT shall be taking our exams during the current set visit dates in August.
*I would also like Asaf's visit to coincide with the final day of the WTN competition so that he could also participate in prize giving and precide as guest of honour. This way he will meet all the participants of WTN who shall include non-members too and we shall maximise on his talk.
* We can also register new members after the session.
I presented this to members at wikisaturday and they backed the idea.
Ps - Asaf , Is it possible to reschedule your visit?

Hi, everyone.
I understand the timing is not ideal for JKUAT students. :(
As I am based in San Francisco, travel to Kenya is quite long and expensive. Therefore, the timing of my visit is related to my travel Israel for Wikimania, which takes place in early August. After Wikimania, I will be spending another week or so in Israel, and then fly from Israel to Kenya and back, before flying back to San Francisco.
We are trying to be very conservative with Foundation money, and so, if at all possible, would really like to keep my Kenya trip related to the Israel trip.
Thank you for understanding,
Asaf

So, do any of you have any ideas or suggestions about the following?
1. public speaking opportunities 2. meetings I could have to open door for and help WMKE 3. preferred topic of workshop for WMKE members
Let's move forward with planning this, as time is short. Discussion would best take place on the Wiki page: http://wikimedia.or.ke/Visit_of_Asaf_Bartov_from_the_Wikimedia_Foundation
But feel free to respond here if the wiki is more difficult for you.
Even if you have no suggestions, do sign up for the meetup and express a preference for the workshop.

Hi Asaf, Let me make my personal suggestions and input regarding your visit to Kenya:
- public speaking opportunities
The ihub (www.co.ke) is a good open space for such a talk. Its the open space for techies and developers.Problem is such a talk would have to be scheduled between 1800hrs and upwards since you will be around on working days. Ting had a talk there too while he was around and its the main venue where we hold our meet-ups.
- meetings I could have to open door for and help WMKE
As at the moment,we are caught(my opinion) in a tough corner due to the legal aspects. Most organizations and even Government Bodies(ICT,TSLG,MoE) are keen to explore ties.We had a talk with Google EA while Ting was around and they were very interested in helpiing us get off the ground. They even told us to present "numbers and figures" and they would be glad and ready to support us.Problem is we are not a legal entity and as such we decided to push to sort with Chap-Com and then register as a legal entity.I believe once we are one, such a meetup would be most appropriate.(I hope we will be one at the Wikimania though...:-) )
However I would suggest we visit Google Offices in Nairobi. This should show our interest and the Foundation Commitment and appreciation in extending ties between WMKE and Google EA. Since we would be still organizing the Wikipedia Takes Nairobi,a meeting with the ICT board could also foster our existing ties. From what Alex informed me,we are still in search for a sponsor for the same and we haven't yet found one.Perhaps this meeting could help proove how "serious" the foundation is attaching to the WTN and maybe a sponsor would come out..:-)
We also visited KU (www.ku.ac.ke) with Ting and we had a greta and fruitful discussions with the Top Management of the Universities about future areas of collaboration in advancing our aims.We were supposed to get back to them and deliver an Outreach sort of talk to there students about Wikipedia and Wikimedia Projects.I would suggest we pay a visit to them too. This would be tow-fold:
We would re-pay the "debt" we owe them and we would also explore and discuss on what and how WMKE and KU can collaborate to advance their agendas and the common objective of "making knowledge universally available"
- preferred topic of workshop for WMKE members
I would personally Vouch for :Motivating Volunteers: how to attract, care for, feed, and keep volunteers; how to handle crises We have had our own fair share of crisis about volunteer management and this talk to all the WMKE would really come in handy...:-)
Hi,
I wanted to reply/comment on this on http://wikimedia.or.ke/Visit_of_Asaf_Bartov_from_the_Wikimedia_Foundation, but before I do so, I'd like to get some clarifications: Under the workshop title, Alex included a number of institutions. Are these workshops going to be held in all these institutions? AFAIK, the workshop is meant primarily for us (members of WMKE). I think that the venue title fits more appropriately under "public speaking" where Asaf will visit some institutions and give talks to the broader audience. Secondly, please sign after commenting to avoid confusion. (This is slightly off-topic, but someone also commented on the bylaws discussion page without signing and I'm not sure whether it comes from ChapCom or a WMKE member.) Abbas.

That's correct: the workshop is for WMKE members, focusing on one of the topics I proposed. Apart from that, I would be happy to have a public speaking event where I would either deliver an Introduction to Wikipedia or (my preference) follow one of _you_ giving an Introduction to Wikipedia with a talk of my own focused on the global aspects of the Wikimedia movement.
I am taking your advice to skip Mombasa as it doesn't seem we have enough traction there at the moment to make the trip there worthwhile. I am still keen to get more input from this group -- beyond a visit to the Google office, is there a meeting with some other third party that we can arrange where I could be of service to WMKE?
Thanks,
A.

As Oscar mentioned, meeting with like-minded organisations _and_ coming out with meaningful results is at the moment tricky because we are not yet a recognised and registered chapter. However, ChapCom has responded with quite a number of questions (on meta) and we're going to respond to them ASAP and hopefully get the approval soon. The organisations that we've approached in the past include TSLG Africa and the Kenya ICT Board. Sometime in the past, Stephen mentioned another organisation that we could partner with (I don't remember it's name). For starters, we could do with an official letter from you (WMF), so that we can use it to approach these institutions and inform them of your proposed visit. Abbas.

Jessie once had a Skype meeting with Camara Mombasa and maybe she can loop you on how it went and whether there's anything we can get out of them. Also, there's OER Africa[http://www.oerafrica.org] that we may approach (though I don't know where to start since I don't have any contacts with them). Abbas.

Abbas.

Thanks, A.

Hi,
I wanted to reply/comment on this on http://wikimedia.or.ke/Visit_of_Asaf_Bartov_from_the_Wikimedia_Foundation, but before I do so, I'd like to get some clarifications:
Under the workshop title, Alex included a number of institutions.
(This is slightly off-topic, but someone also commented on the bylaws discussion page without signing and I'm not sure whether it comes from ChapCom or a WMKE member.)
Abbas.

Hi Asaf, Let me make my personal suggestions and input regarding your visit to Kenya:
- public speaking opportunities
The ihub (www.co.ke) is a good open space for such a talk. Its the open space for techies and developers.Problem is such a talk would have to
be scheduled between 1800hrs and upwards since you will be around on working days. Ting had a talk there too while he was around and its the main venue where we hold our meet-ups.
- meetings I could have to open door for and help WMKE
As at the moment,we are caught(my opinion) in a tough corner due to the legal aspects. Most organizations and even Government Bodies(ICT,TSLG,MoE) are keen to explore ties.We had a talk with Google EA while Ting was around and they were very interested in
helpiing us get off the ground. They even told us to present "numbers and figures" and they would be glad and ready to support us.Problem is we are not a legal entity and as such we decided to push to sort with
Chap-Com and then register as a legal entity.I believe once we are one, such a meetup would be most appropriate.(I hope we will be one at the Wikimania though...:-) )
However I would suggest we visit Google Offices in Nairobi. This should
show our interest and the Foundation Commitment and appreciation in extending ties between WMKE and Google EA. Since we would be still organizing the Wikipedia Takes Nairobi,a meeting with the ICT board could also foster our existing ties. From
what Alex informed me,we are still in search for a sponsor for the same and we haven't yet found one.Perhaps this meeting could help proove how "serious" the foundation is attaching to the WTN and maybe
a sponsor would come out..:-)
We also visited KU (www.ku.ac.ke) with Ting and we had a greta and fruitful discussions with the Top Management of the Universities about
future areas of collaboration in advancing our aims.We were supposed to get back to them and deliver an Outreach sort of talk to there students about Wikipedia and Wikimedia Projects.I would suggest we pay
a visit to them too. This would be tow-fold:
We would re-pay the "debt" we owe them and we would also explore and discuss on what and how WMKE and KU can collaborate to advance their
agendas and the common objective of "making knowledge universally available"
- preferred topic of workshop for WMKE members
I would personally Vouch for :Motivating Volunteers: how to attract,
care for, feed, and keep volunteers; how to handle crises We have had our own fair share of crisis about volunteer management and this talk to all the WMKE would really come in handy...:-)

Hi, everyone.
I'd like to make more progress with planning my visit. Many of you have not yet participated in this conversation. I realize you may be busy; it would be great if those of you with some time on their hands could participate in the discussion, here and on the wiki at: http://wikimedia.or.ke/Visit_of_Asaf_Bartov_from_the_Wikimedia_Foundation

The iHub sounds great, and a post-1800 time for public speaking is not a problem for me! Can WMKE set it up? If there's a fee to use the iHub, the Foundation will pay it.

This sounds good to me. I have already contacted the Google Nairobi office, and they would be happy for me to visit. I'd like some of you to join me. I know some of you have already had contact with the Google Nairobi office, so perhaps we can use this opportunity to introduce some other WMKE members to the Google team? I think 3 or 4 WMKE members would be great to join me in that meeting. Securing Google as a sponsor for WTN would definitely be one goal of that meeting. What else do you think we could ask from Google? They wanted "numbers and figures", not your NGO registration papers; this means that if we can come up with concrete plans (with a budget, a realistic timeline, and a list of people committed to doing the work), we can move forward with securing support from Google (as well as the Foundation).

Excellent! Perhaps we can deliver a double talk as I proposed elsewhere -- a general "introduction to Wikipedia" delivered by a WMKE member, and a talk on Wikimedia as a global movement (or on the Foundation and its strategy and plans?) by me. Is one of you willing to make this happen?
- preferred topic of workshop for WMKE members

Gladly. If more people voice an opinion on this, I'll be able to prepare an appropriate workshop.
Cheers!
Asaf

desired username and e-mail address is also good, then the wiki will create you a temporary (secret) password and send it to you by mail.

The problem is not with the you, most WMKE may not do a post-1800 meeting. The travel logistics in Nairobi may not allow most of us to attend the meeting.I suggest we do a daytime meeting at some other venue? The August memorial Park in the City Center? However they charge a small fee.The iHub facility is free of charge for scheduled meetings subject to availability and booking.

Our Contact at KU(Dr.Martin Njoroge) earlier on told me that our vsist may not be possible as they KU Students will be away then.He wished it were in September.I saw your request to the Director of e-learning in a different thread and I hope we will be able to have a chat with him. I would be finding the contacts of the Director of e-learning of JKUAT and I hope you would not mind sedning a similar email to him.

Thanks Oscar for notifying us. Does anyone have contacts at USIU? We could approach them as well. Also, Alex, have you contacted UoN? I have a contact there that might be able to contact UoN's Dean. BTW, I have an official introduction letter from Wikimedia, so in case any one of you needs it to approach various institutions, please do contact me and i will forward the letter to you beforehand. Abbas.
