Hi guys,
I've got updates on this and ofcourse feedback will be awesome. I had a chat with Andrew from Perth, Australia and he had some great suggestions. I'll be a bit tied up during the day so I'll email you on this later on in the evening.
Cheers, Alex
Hi Nice people,
We had planned to undertake this project in the future.
The future arrives one day at a time and from my PVT conversation with Alex, we have up to three weeks to wrap up the preparations and thus the launch of this ginormous project just before the end of October.
On that note consequently, a budget has been prepared by a portion of interested WMKE members and we would like to have your suggestions in the following areas;
• How long should we run the photo competition??
Bear in mind that; Some teams in Australia had more than 1 GB of photos yet the competition was run for only a single day. For our case here in Kenya running the competition for a day might not even scratch the surface of our targets just an example.
• What are the proper awards for the 1st prize, 2nd prize and the 3rd prizes?
The prizes should proportionate the efforts that you universally consider sincere. I.e. we cannot seek a sponsorship to Wikimania 2012 from the WMF for a winner who only took photos for only a day – for you to go to Wikimania I think you are in better shape if you know how to edit Wikipedia and wikis in general, just a case in point.
• To make sure we not only preserve the guys who partake in this photo contest, we also plan to teach them how to edit and become wikieditors, we shall run an article writing competition later after which we can now award a single ticket to Wikimania 2012 for the best article which ought to be of a very high quality.
Your opinions of how to make this take place are highly longed-for and revered.
Regards, Stephen.

yes, you're absolutely right. Even that guy from Capital (I've forgotten his name) told us that a one-day competition might not be the best way to go. Wiki Loves Monuments, for instance ran through the month of September and had over 160,000+ photo uploads. Of course I do not anticipate that we'll get that magnitude of uploads if we run this competition for a month (since in WLM, around 20 countries participated), but it was just worth comparing a one-day competition to a one-month competition.
On that note consequently, a budget has been prepared by a portion of interested WMKE members [...]
I personally did not contribute to the Google Doc page regarding WTN because Alex told me that Wikimedia France had agreed to fund this project. I think we need proper clarification (from Alex) onto who's funding what, because there seems to be a mis-communication here.

I'm the one who suggested the Wikimania prize since it could be easily arranged for as compared to looking for a sponsor/grant, etc. And when I suggested this prize, I did not have the one-day competition in mind.

Erm, a writing competition is quite controversial and didn't prove to retain editors in the Kiswahili Wikipedia Challenge. What makes you think it will, this time round? --Abbas.
Hi Guys,
My take on the duration would be to do for a week max. Honestly with the kind of Kenya Culture we got, I am kinda scared that pushing the Challenge for a longer period will lose its flavor. Plus Not many participants will push on...IMO
For the prizes, I would suggest swags and phones be grand prizes.
However we should not oblige the participants of WTN to the Editing Contest; the two should be totally different.

Thanks for posting this Steve,
First of all, apologies for the prolonged silence on this, I've been short on time.
So regarding funding, last time I spoke to Adrienne from Wikimedia France, she said they'd be willing to fund this but of-course we'll need to submit a budget for them to look at and I believe I mentioned this when I setup the Google doc so hope I'm clear this time, budget needs to be filled up.
An article writing competition as a follow-up should be great, when KWC happened, there were no Wikimedian's (as participants) involved but right now, we have Wikimedians so worst case scenario, we'll have new / improved articles, best case, more edits past the competition. During KWC, there was no follow-up on editing, we are here to do that now so hopefully, this will reignite article editing and it's my hope that wmke can sustain this past the competition.
Feedback also needed: * Venue for awards ceremony: suggestions so far - Bomb blast memorial park, Strathmore uni * Start date: suggestions - beginning of November, end of Noivember * Judges: I believe here's where Eric Latiff should come in handy, getting guys from media and photography industries in Kenya to judge would be great (NB: not solely ie, we'll help) so Isaac... * Focus groups: ie people we should target fro the challenge. I'm already in contact with a group of photographers
A suggestion put forward to sustain activity on WTN over a long period (more than a day) is to focus outreach on different regions (CBD, Westlands, Eastlands etc) as the competition goes along, thoughts on this are welcome.
Updates: * In-touch with Isla Haddow, project manager for WikiAfrica who'll be assisting in getting word out to various cultural institutions in Africa, plan to touch base with her after receiving some feedback here. Iolanda (from Wikimedia Italy) has also been helpful here. * Google is interested in WTN as per our last meetup when Asaf was around, just pinged Angela (from Google) with updates on this and as agreed from our (wmke) chats, we won't work on their schedule so as to avoid a similar situation with the ICT Board * As for ICT Board, I can only confirm their presence during the awards ceremony and maybe some media attention.
cheers,
Alex

IMHO, one month is quite long and I would suggest that we do it for week..
As I put it earlier this week, I also exchanged contacts with some live media coverage house while I was at the IGF 2011 and they were optimistic after I mentioned this topic to them, so +1....
For the prizes I still feel that we should make them 'appealing'.....in the sense that they will make those who did not participate or did not put much effort feel envious and long for another competition. Am I clear?
For example, I personally fully regret for not having participated in the KWC yet I saw the posters in my college for several reasons that range from winning goodies to attending wikipedia 10.
Alex +1, for contacting interested participants. Kosgey please talk with Eric and lets hear what he says. Abbas, we must prapare the budget and presemt it to WM-France...already said.. Yes, Oscar memorial park would do, we do not want to stressmore our participants :-) A quick one though, How many people can Memorial park accomodate?
regards, steve.
Just a thought;
As we prepare for this event I find it wise if we create an event on our Facebook page and a dedicated twitter handle that we shall use to follow this up.
The event page could consist of the prizes to be won, benefits of participating e.t..c So we need to settle on the prizes ASAP.
Do we have a twitter account? If yes please let the admin ping me for a word or two regarding this if there is none please let me know and I wil go right ahead to create one......
regards, stephen
Halo everyone, This is great work done. Firstly, I'd like to suggest the competition period be two weeks. One week seems to be too short and a month is way too long for such a competition. on the prizes, I would suggest we purchase items that would enable the participants participate more in different projects of WMKE or the foundation. For instance editing Wikipedia and so on. This can include a laptop, a smart phone, a digital camera and so on. However, I strongly feel getting some laptops can be a better idea since they come in a big range of prices. Regards
Thanks for the clarification. I just want to say that I am against the idea of another editing competition since I still do not believe that it's the best way to retain editors. Sincerely, Abbas Mahmood, Learners' Voice 2011 Member: World Innovation Summit for Education http://www.wise-qatar.org

I'm already in contact with a group of photographers A suggestion put forward to sustain activity on WTN over a long period (more than a day) is to focus outreach on different regions (CBD, Westlands, Eastlands etc) as the competition goes along, thoughts on this are welcome. Updates:In-touch with Isla Haddow, project manager for WikiAfrica who'll be assisting in getting word out to various cultural institutions in Africa, plan to touch base with her after receiving some feedback here. Iolanda (from Wikimedia Italy) has also been helpful here.Google is interested in WTN as per our last meetup when Asaf was around, just pinged Angela (from Google) with updates on this and as agreed from our (wmke) chats, we won't work on their schedule so as to avoid a similar situation with the ICT BoardAs for ICT Board, I can only confirm their presence during the awards ceremony and maybe some media attention. cheers,Alex Steve,

Bear in mind that; Some teams in Australia had more than 1 GB of photos yet the competition was run for only a single day. For our case here in Kenya running the competition for a day might not even scratch the surface of our targets just an example.
yes, you're absolutely right.
• What are the proper awards for the 1st prize, 2nd prize and the 3rd prizes?
The prizes should proportionate the efforts that you universally consider sincere. I.e. we cannot seek a sponsorship to Wikimania 2012 from the WMF for a winner who only took photos for only a day – for you to go to Wikimania I think you are in better shape if you know
how
to edit Wikipedia and wikis in general, just a case in point.
I'm the one who suggested the Wikimania prize since it could be easily arranged for as compared to looking for a sponsor/grant, etc. And when I suggested this prize, I did not have the one-day competition in mind.
• To make sure we not only preserve the guys who partake in this photo contest, we also plan to teach them how to edit and become wikieditors, we shall run an article writing competition later after which we can now award a single ticket to Wikimania 2012 for the best article which ought to be of a very high quality.
Erm, a writing competition is quite controversial and didn't prove to retain editors in the Kiswahili Wikipedia Challenge. What makes you think it will, this time round? --Abbas.

Hi Nice people,
We had planned to undertake this project in the future.
The future arrives one day at a time and from my PVT conversation with Alex, we have up to three weeks to wrap up the preparations and thus the launch of this ginormous project just before the end of October.
On that note consequently, a budget has been prepared by a portion of interested WMKE members and we would like to have your suggestions in the following areas;
• How long should we run the photo competition??
Bear in mind that; Some teams in Australia had more than 1 GB of photos yet the competition was run for only a single day. For our case here in Kenya running the competition for a day might not even scratch the surface of our targets just an example.

What about three/two/one month(s) Internet access via Safaricom or another company? Mobile Internet is the most common way of connecting in Tanzania at least, I have the impression that that's the case in Kenya too, but I might be wrong of course.

Hello folks, I personally think that doing the contest in November/December is not a good idea since most students will be doing exams. I think that doing it in Jan would probably result in an increase in participants.

Well thought of, that makes a lot of sense all together! Having the contest in November/ December will make it quite not a success, come to think of it! Pushing it to January on the other hand makes some good sense out of this.
Similarly, I'd suggest we use November/ December to market the contest instead then come January, 'execution'' will be the key word!

Hi, i don't think anyone has exams in November. The date set is quite OK (3rd Nov) and more so as stipulated the competition will only take two weeks. Regards
Really? When do people do exams, then? If some people wouldn't be having exams in November, they'll probably be _preparing_ for upcoming exams -- and from experience, students don't want to engage in other activities when they are revising for exams. Moreover, I still feel we have a lot to do: -print banners, advertise-finalise the budget-give Wikimedia France at least a week (at best) to discuss, and approve the budget.-give another week to get the wire transfer into a Kenyan bank account.-buy the prizes (which are still undecided)-choose the jury (that will select the winners) If you think that you can pull that off within this month, then best of luck with that.

Moreover, I still feel we have a lot to do:
-print banners, advertise-finalise the budget-give Wikimedia France at least a week (at best) to discuss, and approve the budget.-give another week to get the wire transfer into a Kenyan bank account.
-buy the prizes (which are still undecided)- have been decided....
choose the jury (that will select the winners)....Counting on Isaac to loop in Latif

I already did: let's do it in January. (although I'm not one the organizers [it's Alex and team] -- so if they feel that they can pull it off with the current dates, then so be it)

And what are the prizes that have been decided? And if they have been decided, I presume that WMFr has already received the budget, right? --Abbas.
