Come one, come all!
Our next meeting for Wikimedia NYC is Sunday November 15 at Columbia University.
This is a meeting for volunteers to the projects of the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation, and everyone else too, who has ever looked at Wikipedia and wondered what's going on behind it.
One big topic of discussion, out of many, will be preparing for our ongoing 'Wikipedia at the Library' classes in planning for the Wireless Harlem nonprofit (Spanish-speaking volunteers could help here!) and at the Brooklyn Public Library.
Other topics will include the particular problems posed by Wikipedia articles about racist and anti-semitic people and movements such as the article 'Controversies related to prevalence of Jews in leadership roles in Hollywood', and discussing other issues relevant to Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia projects.
We welcome all guests. If you support open education and free culture, we are your people. If you have a project you want to work on with us, this is a great opportunity to get acquainted. If you want someone to give a talk or teach a class with an inside view of Wikipedia, meet your volunteers. And if you just have any questions, we'd be glad to try to answer them.
Remember, the agenda here is up to you! I encourage anyone who is interested to sign up to give a presentation or suggest a topic for general discussion at our wikimeetup page (given below).
---Meeting details---
2:30 PM - 5:00PM: Room 1402 Pupin Hall, Columbia University. Take the elevator to the 13th floor and then walk up one flight of stairs. Meeting to be held in the library at the east end of the hall.
5:00 PM onwards: Meetup at Pupin Hall, and then walk together to either the Chinese restaurant Columbia Cottage, or the Kosher Moroccan restaurant Cafe Nana (help us decide!).

I am signed up but have learned that I will have to be late to the event (work reasons). Can someone e-mail here the name and address of where it is decided to have dinner, in case I have to go straight there? (FYI, I'm good with any of the choices that were being discussed.)

I am so sorry that I can not attend the meeting today. I have been waiting for the opportunity to learn more about Wikimedia NYC. Unfortunately my first invite comes on the last day of WordCamp NYC. I would have skipped this last day for Wikimedia, except Matt Mullenweg the founder of WordPress, is the closing speaker. I hope to attend the next meeting of Wikimedia NYC.

We need to try to set up a general calendar of some sort for related NYC activities to try to avoid conflicts like this, but there will be increasingly be so much going that it will be sometimes unavoidable.

I believe if we knew at the beginning of each month what the activates were it would help us plan and adhere to schedule better. Further, receiving the schedule each month at the same time, such as Dec.1 or Jan. 1 would also help.

I usually try to put notice on the list 2 weeks ahead of time, because it tends to take about that long before details of an event are relatively firmed up. But perhaps we should try for more longer-term planning- would that help more people to be able to attend?
I think Marc is also going to look into our inclusion on some google calendars of related events.

Richard,
Longer term planning in my experience is always beneficial. It's also possible to review an established tentative calendar periodically and revise it as circumstances change or in light of new information. It sounds simplistic but I believe it is the difference between having a road map and not. Rarely are great things achieved without any plan at all.....
On another note, I enjoyed my first session sitting in on the meetup and am interested in determining if there is some role I can play helping develop this young non profit organization. While I have some but limited experience working with non profits, I do enjoy growing companies and have extensive resources available to me as a Harvard Business School grad and member of its NY Club. I will be giving that some thought over the coming weeks but certainly if you have any pressing needs please feel free to share them with me. Perhaps I can offer some assistance.

Other topics will include the particular problems posed by Wikipedia articles about racist and anti-semitic people and movements such as the article 'Controversies related to prevalence of Jews in
leadership
roles in Hollywood', and discussing other issues relevant to
Wikipedia
and the other Wikimedia projects.
We welcome all guests. If you support open education and free culture, we are your people. If you have a project you want to work on with us, this is a great opportunity to get acquainted. If you
want
someone to give a talk or teach a class with an inside view of Wikipedia, meet your volunteers.

I just had a crazy idea: What if we created a space on-wiki where people can post interesting events as they become aware of them? That way we will all always know what's coming up, and no single person has to be in charge of maintaining it.
For inclusion, the event must be public and must have something to do with free culture or the internet.
