Hi folks,
"Wikipedia Day NYC" will be held on Sunday January 24, 2010 (date
awaiting final confirmation) at New York University
The event is in commemoration of Wikipedia Day and the 9th anniversary
(!) of the founding of the site.
We are especially happy to welcome newcomers and the interested public
to the "Wikipedia world" with this event!
We will include several sessions specifically for newcomers, such as
"Welcome to Wikipedia: A tutorial for newcomers" and "Wikipedia and
Your Project: Educational and content partnerships", and people at all
levels of wiki-experience and coming from all fields are very welcome
to join us.
Read all about it, and please sign up for a lightning talk or open space:

Greetings to Wikipedians and Wikimedians, and especially to new
friends from the recent CUNY IT Conference,
I would like to invite folks to participate in our "Open Education
League of New York" list and umbrella group, something that emerged
out of Open Everything NYC conference earlier this year.
http://groups.google.com/group/open-education-league-nyhttp://nyc.openeverything.us/
One of the initial ideas we had in the discussions at Open Everything
NYC was that as we saw so many people raise these topics at that
conference and as we form a real Open Education community in this
area, and there are quite a few folks coming at this goal from
disparate projects and areas of experience, it would be a good way of
connecting for us start regular conversations and perhaps to actually
meet up once a month or so.
There was some discussion of whether we should hold meetings
independently or perhaps piggyback on another group like the Drupal
meetup, and it is probably too early to say now what a permanent
solution would look like (and I hope we'll have some good suggestions
coming).
But this can also be an interesting forum for online conversations
about Open Education topics and local experiences ranging from the
creation of Open Educational Resources to medium-scale scanning
projects of old books and periodicals.
Thanks,
Richard

Come one, come all!
Our next meeting for Wikimedia NYC is Sunday November 15 at Columbia University.
This is a meeting for volunteers to the projects of the non-profit
Wikimedia Foundation, and everyone else too, who has ever looked at
Wikipedia and wondered what's going on behind it.
One big topic of discussion, out of many, will be preparing for our
ongoing 'Wikipedia at the Library' classes in planning for the
Wireless Harlem nonprofit (Spanish-speaking volunteers could help
here!) and at the Brooklyn Public Library.
Other topics will include the particular problems posed by Wikipedia
articles about racist and anti-semitic people and movements such as
the article 'Controversies related to prevalence of Jews in leadership
roles in Hollywood', and discussing other issues relevant to Wikipedia
and the other Wikimedia projects.
We welcome all guests. If you support open education and free
culture, we are your people. If you have a project you want to work
on with us, this is a great opportunity to get acquainted. If you want
someone to give a talk or teach a class with an inside view of
Wikipedia, meet your volunteers. And if you just have any questions,
we'd be glad to try to answer them.
Remember, the agenda here is up to you! I encourage anyone who is
interested to sign up to give a presentation or suggest a topic for
general discussion at our wikimeetup page (given below).
---Meeting details---
2:30 PM - 5:00PM:
Room 1402 Pupin Hall, Columbia University. Take the elevator to the
13th floor and then walk up one flight of stairs. Meeting to be held
in the library at the east end of the hall.
5:00 PM onwards:
Meetup at Pupin Hall, and then walk together to either the Chinese
restaurant Columbia Cottage, or the Kosher Moroccan restaurant Cafe
Nana (help us decide!).

You can officially 'sign up' at that page, and please add your ideas
to the agenda!

It ain't easy when New York is a summer festival that doesn't quit when
the leaves fall off. Yesterday I had to forego a group bike ride to
Westchester, and most weekends there are photography shows, astronomy
meetings, history lectures or other events that force me to choose.
NYC cycling interests hold a "bicycle summit" every February to minimize
schedule conflicts among events such as the [[Five Boro Bike Tour]] and
the hundred mile rides of [[Transportation Alternatives]]. Small or
weekday events such as this Thursday's ride to the Tibetan museum in
Staten Island, probably attracting only a dozen people, are not included.
Perhaps a similar coordination among New York's non commercial Web
interests would be productive.
Yesterday we heard from a new user of Commons, coming from a photography
background rather than a Wikipedia background, who is having trouble with
our admittedly arcane upload procedures. Meanwhile my Wiki background
makes Commons easy; it's just that I seldom understand how to produce a
photo good enough to be worth giving away for free. Darn it, we need
peple like that. People like me can teach them our methods and hope to
get hints from their years of experience in the art of picture making.
There ought to be a specialized meeting, preferably in an Internet cafe
or other place that can give good connections and the ability to show
each other how to handle things.

This is a meeting for volunteers to the projects of the non-profit

One big topic of discussion, out of many, will be preparing for our

discussing issues relevant to Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia

Yep, that image works fine. I'll try to get the 1023 together by the weekend. We might need to approve some things at the meeting on the 25th (COI policy, etc) before I can mail it out, so it should be good timing. Does anyone have thoughts on uploading scans of our documents to Commons? I'm fairly certain the IRS requires us to make them public and hosting them on our page at Meta would be an easy way to keep everyone on the same page.
Matt

The 1st Wiki-Conference New York will be held over the weekend of July
25-26 2009 (confirmed!) at New York University, and hosted by Free
Culture @ NYU and Wikimedia New York City.
Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales will be giving a keynote, and we will
also have a second keynote speaker TBA. Since this is an
unconference, participants are encouraged to give your own ideas for
topic sessions!
This is a also great opportunity for people who aren't so wiki-savvy
to get a fun introduction. All are most certainly welcome.
Oh yeah, and we're having the Central Park picnic again too!
