Come one, come all!
Our next meeting for Wikimedia NYC is this Sunday June 1 at Columbia University.
This is a meeting for volunteers to the projects of the non-profit
Wikimedia Foundation, and everyone else too, who has ever looked at
Wikipedia and wondered what's going on behind it.
Organizational issues on the agenda will include electing a board of
directors for the Wikimedia NYC chapter, and preparing for a "Wiki
Week" or "Wiki Conference" with Columbia Free Culture for the fall at
Columbia University
There will also be presentations from Wikipedians/Wikimedians on a
number of different topics in the projects.
We welcome all guests. If you support open education and free culture,
we are your people. If you have a project you want to work on with us,
this is a great opportunity to get acquainted. If you want someone to
give a talk or teach a class with an inside view of Wikipedia, meet
your volunteers. And if you just have any questions, we'd be glad to
try to answer them.
---Meeting details---
2:30 PM - 5:00PM:
Room 1402 Pupin Hall, Columbia University. Take the elevator to the
13th floor and then walk up one flight of stairs. Meeting to be held
in the library at the east end of the hall.
5:00 PM onwards:
Meetup at Pupin Hall, and then walk together to The Symposium, a local
Greek restaurant with an oddly appropriate name. After the restaurant,
we can return to Pupin Hall for an observing session with the
telescopes on the roof, weather permitting.

Hi all,
Our Wikipedia Takes Manhattan photo event (the first of its kind
anywhere) was held on April 4, and we now have all photos online and
illustrating articles.
We got photos for 92 specifically requested sites (90 separate
articles), nearly half of the 188 on our list.
Check out these links:
(general report on the event)
(our cool gallery of all the photos taken)
Also, we have a report on our WikiNortheast blog at
http://wikinortheast.blogspot.com/ (this is a regional blog geared
toward fellow Wikimedians in the Northeast US; if anyone wants to
contribute a guest post on something, pop me a personal e-mail)
Thanks,
Pharos
Hi NYC Wikimedians,
I think you'd be interested in this event, especially as a certain
Wikimedian will be speaking. Feel free to spread the word, and hope to see
you there!

What will come of the next decade on the Internet? We often take for granted
the state of the net today, but there's no guarantee that it will remain
this way. Will the digital future be dystopian, or is there a brighter
outlook ahead than some may believe? Our panelists -- thinkers and net
visionaries -- will provide their perspectives on the future of the net,
with backgrounds ranging from art, law, technology, politics, media,
culture, and entrepreneurship. We will tap in to each speaker's knowledge
to provide a unique vision of the digital future, and will engage with
members of the audience to further the exploration of what lies ahead.

Important note: You MUST MUST MUST register at
http://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?key=p6ZUwmVAR5AffdgwuyvNNKA
by Thursday 8 PM EST, if there is any possibility you plan on
participating or coming to the party that night..
'"Wikipedia Takes Manhattan!"
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Wikipedia_Takes_Manhattan) is
a scavenger hunt and free content photography contest aimed at
illustrating Wikipedia articles covering the wondrous sights on the
island of Manhattan.
The goal is to take as many photos as possible for Wikipedia articles
that currently don't have any pictures.
We're doing this event with the sponsorship of Free Culture Columbia,
with cooperation from Free Culture NYU.
You can look at their pages, which have their details on the event:
http://www.freeculturenyu.orghttp://www.freeculturecolumbia.org/
Most of the participants will probably be Columbia and NYU students.
But the event is open to students and non-students, Wikipedians and
non-Wikipedians, and anyone else who wants to compete or participate.
Everyone will meet up and check in at one of the two starting points,
and after a day of subways, street rambles, photography and free
culture goodness, the night will conclude with a party back at
Columbia.
It is important to register if there's a possibility of your coming to
the party that night, whether or not you choose to compete (for
example, if you want to volunteer, or just to hang out). If you don't
register, we will have problems letting you into the building. If you
don't plan on competing, you can note that in the 'Team name' section.
*Register online here:
http://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?key=p6ZUwmVAR5AffdgwuyvNNKA
You can compete in teams of three, or fewer if you wish.
Remember:
* Each team should use only one camera.
* You should start the day with an empty flash card.
* Bring a pen or marker to write with.
At the starting points, you can check-in, and will receive the
finalized goal list of articles needing photographs, and the rules.
The starting points will operate till 7 PM for latecomers. You must
check-in at one of the starting points to compete.
*Columbia University starting point: the Sundial in front of Low
Memorial Library at 11:30 AM (information packets with goal list will
be given out at 12 noon). Will run till 7 PM.
*Union Square starting point (run by NYU students): Union Square Park,
in front of Washington's Statue, at 12 noon. Will run till 7 PM.
The ending party will be held that night at Columbia, the photographs
will be uploaded, and prizes given to the winners. You must come to
the party to be eligible for the prizes.
The first prize winning team members will get iPod nanos jammed with
free music, and the second and third prize winning team members will
win free copies of the newly-published '' Wikipedia: The Missing
Manual'', generously donated by O'Reilly Media.
*Party location: J.D. Satow Room 5th Floor, Lerner Hall
(http://www.columbia.edu/about_columbia/map/lerner.html), at 11:30 PM
(-this was earlier scheduled for 11 PM, but it's been changed-).
Lerner Hall is the student center at Columbia. The party will run
till about midnight, or possibly later.
If you are interested in volunteering that day (either helping people
check-in during the day or helping with uploading and tallying the
winners that evening), please respond to my personal e-mail address,
with your name and mobile phone number.
Thanks,
Pharos
I'd like to let you all know about "Story Jam New
York"(http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Story_Jam_New_York), an event for One
Laptop Per Child per child project being held at UNICEF this weekend.
This is being organized by Mel Chua (User:Mchua), who I met at a
recent NYU Free Culture meeting.
She's inviting SJ Klein (User:Sj), a very active Wikimedian and
OLPCer, along with New York City Wikipedians/Wikimedians and anyone
else interested to a Wikimedia BOF lunch on Saturday at noon
(http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Story_Jam_New_York/Schedule).
I'll be at the lunch, where we can discuss the interaction between
Wikipedia/Wikimedia and OLPC, and how Wikimedia content can be used in
education in the developing world.
There are many other events also scheduled over the weekend.
If you plan on attending, you should register online here first:
http://hackronym.com/jamreg/storyjamregistration.html
Long live the NYC Free Culture Alliance!
Thanks,
Pharos
"Wikipedia Takes Manhattan"
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Wikipedia_Takes_Manhattan) has
been postponed one week to Friday April 4, due to inclement weather.
All the other details remain the same, and you can still look forward
to great happenings on the new date.
Please update your friends you may have shared this event with about
the new date.
Thanks,
Pharos
