Hi everybody,
There’s a workshop on describing images bulk-uploaded from Flickr to Wikidata tomorrow. This might be very specifically relevant only to my interests, but I thought I’d pass it along in case anybody is interested.
Cheers,
Gaurav

> During October, we are promoting the Image Description Month <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image_Description_Month>. 🎉
>
> On Friday, October 27, at 6:00 PM UTC, the Biodiversity Heritage Library is teaming up with OpenRefine and the Culture and Heritage team to host a data modeling workshop + demo using OpenRefine to clean and convert BHL's Flickr data to linked open data.
>
> In this event, participants from the OpenRefine Train-the-Trainer course <https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:OpenRefine/Train-the-trainer_pro…> and editors interested in biodiversity are invited to analyze, discuss, model, and work on preparing the metadata of some Biodiversity Heritage Library <https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Biodiversity_Heritage_Library> images that were available on Flickr. The goal is to make these files ready to be used during the TTT course in November, but also to learn more about Structured Data on Commons.

Hey NC Wikipedian friends!
A few post-meeting updates:
*Two Wiki conferences are coming up in November*:
- WikiConference North America
<https://wikiconference.org/wiki/2023/Main_Page> in Toronto, Ontario
- GLAM Wiki <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/GLAM_Wiki_2023>(for
professionals in or partners of Galleries, Libraries, Archives, and
Museums) in Montevideo, Uruguay
If you're interested in presenting or attending, check the relevant
deadlines at the links above.
*Our annual report is (over)due. *
We've got a solid draft here
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/North_Carolina_Wikipedians/reports#May_1%2C…>.
If you have additions or changes to make, please make them by next Tuesday,
July 17. Or get in touch with me and I'll make them for you. I will submit
the report the following day (7/18).
*Our next monthly meeting is Thursday, August 10, at 7pm. *
Zoom link to follow, but for now mark your calendar. We'll share updates
and continue to work through metadata cleanup for last year's photo
campaign.
Until then, I hope you're all doing well and staying cool.
Emily

On the agenda:
- Annual report
- Updating metadata from last year's photo challenge
Hope to see you there!
Emily
Hello NC Wiki friends!
In our June 6 meeting, we discussed a plan for future meetings for the
foreseeable future: We'll share movement & local updates, as always, and
will use the bulk of our time to work through metadata of the photos we
gathered during our photo campaign
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Uploaded_via_Campaign:WikiPixNC>
last year. If you love a chill, collaborative work session with friends, I
hope you'll join us for at least one of those meetings!
Our next meeting will be *Thursday, July 6, at 7pm*. Also on the agenda for
that meeting: our annual report, which is ever so slightly overdue.
I'll send another reminder and a Zoom link as the meeting gets closer. In
the meantime, mark your calendar!
Cheers,
Emily
Hey NC Wikipedians! Just a reminder that we'll meet this *Thursday (June 1)
at 7pm*. Zoom link: https://unc.zoom.us/j/95436613954
Hope to see you then!
Emily
Hey NC Wikipedians! I hope you're all doing well and that you'll forgive my
radio silence. I've been contending with some health issues that have been
worse than usual of late. But we're long overdue for a meeting. *Would
Thursday, June 1, at 7pm work for those who are inclined to attend?* Please
let me know, either on or off list.
I also wanted to let you all know about a workshop this Thursday that may
be of interest. I heard about Wiki Workshop <https://wikiworkshop.org/2023/>
from a professor at UNC's School of Information and Library Science, who
studies Wikipedia. From her email:
"Wiki Workshop is a forum for bringing together researchers exploring all
aspects of the Wikimedia projects. It's a place where we create bridges
between the research communities and many other communities that make the
Wikimedia projects a reality: volunteer editors, developers, academics,
affiliate organizations and user-groups, policy advocates, and beyond."
This is a workshop by and for people who do research about the Wikimedia
projects -- rather than one by and for the editing communities. But I'm
sure there is considerable overlap!
Registration is free: (https://pretix.eu/wikimedia/wikiworkshop2023/)
Even if you don't attend, you can view some of the abstracts, which cover
topics such as:
- the effects of page protection on Wikipedia
- how editors construct knowledge on mental health
- inclusion of Intersex and Trans-Non-Binary Gender Identities in the
editor community
- effects of the Russo-Ukrainian War on the editor activity of the
Ukrainian, Russian, and English Wikipedias
If anyone attends, I'd love to hear about it!
Emily
Thought this might be of interest to some of y’all!
Cheers,
Gaurav
