Hi guys, I hope everyone have a good rest after planning so much of the Wikipedia 10's meetup.
This is somewhat different from all the different emails that you might be getting constantly from the replies to the Wikipedia 10's planning in Singapore. But I believe we should not just focus on one subject(planning on Wikipedia 10) and forgetting about other things.
Lets discuss:
What chance would we get to host a Wikimania in Singapore?
Seriously, I somewhat disagree with the fact that we are able to hold high hopes in getting the chance of being able to host Wikimania. I have interacted with people from other countries, with the weather similar to the US. With people saying: "15 degrees is perfect" and "Singapore is way tooo hot for me".
We might have the world's best resources in making the Wikimania a memorable one, but our weather is the only module that is affecting us! We don't have to discuss about this now, but this issue will sooner or later arise.
How are we able to create a Wikimedia Chapter with such a small community?
Correct me if I am wrong, but we currently have less than 20 Wikimedians(let alone Wikipedians) in the mailing list. Maybe the others are too lazy to join, but our goal of this mailing list is to be able to get Singaporean Wikimedians to come together and plan a Wikimedia Chapter in Singapore.
Try getting your friends(or your enemies. :)) to join this mailing list. Other than this mailing list, we should also set up an IRC channel to communicate better. Maybe Terrance, you can create one? Besides, shouldn't we create a website so that we can be more informed with what is happening to Wikimedia in Singapore?
I hope these questions can kick start our plannings of Wikimedia Singapore.
Regards,Hydrizhttp://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Hydriz
I really dont think Singapore has too many hardcore Wikipedians or whatever you call it. I myself am not one either, but Im willing to sacrifice one of my good weekends for the 10th anniversary of Wikipedia- Im sure many people would too if this event were more lively

This is seriously a tricky question. Like me, I am a hardcore Wikipedian, but I am not attending this event due to personal issues.

We've tried IRC before, I still have it up and running, but it's no longer
in use.

Can we make this a lively event?
It will attract more people if we offer more perks, rather than just a simple wikipedia-editing day

Hi Bjorn,
Thanks so much for your interest! Unfortunately, there isn't really a
local group at the moment. I'm forwarding your e-mail to the
WikiMedia-SG mailing list, which is where the organization of this
event is happening. There might be long-term editors on this mailing
list interested in talking to you directly, or who have a better idea

Singapore. If they do, I'm sure they'll get in touch with you

Otherwise, I'm afraid your best option will be to come down on
Saturday, where you can meet with all of us and get a sense of how
many Wikipedians there are in Singapore and what we do. Hope you can
join us for some cake!
cheers,

Hello Gaurav,
This is Bjorn from The New Paper. I got your email from my polytechnic
course mate, Ding Xiang. I believe he is your colleague.
This is regarding a story we're chasing on a group of hardcore
wikipedia contributors located in Singapore. We are looking to do a
story on this select group of contributors and possibly do a feature
of the members of this group.
Would you be able to grant me an interview with, say, 4 or 5 members
of this group? Would really appreciate your help with this.
Thanks for your time and I hope to hear from you soon!

Heya,
So far, the RSVP form has eight positive replies, with 4 "almost certains" (+ 2 on Facebook) and 4 maybes (+1 on Facebook). So it looks like there'll be 4 to 11 people come next Saturday.
So far, a lot of people seem to like the idea of just meeting up for coffee - I did that at Slashdot's 10th anniversary, and it was plenty of fun just like that. Does anybody know any nice coffee places with enough space for 10-20 people? (our numbers might go up over the next week if we can market this event a bit on mailing lists and Facebook) If so, let me know and I'll make a reservation.
A slightly more sophisticated meet up could be at Hackerspace.sg (if we can talk them into lending us the space). The question is, what would we do there? Other WikiX events seem to have a lot of talks in them, but I don't know where we'd find speakers for that at such short notice. So unless somebody comes up with a good idea for this, I don't think we'll bother. But ...
... we could run a (mini) Editathon, like they're doing at the British Library, London [1]. It sounds awesome and also a lot of fun, and would give us something to focus on in terms of our organization. We could pick Singapore related pages to clean up and work on, or just work on our own articles or interests. This would be brilliant, as we'd have definite goals, would keep people interested all day long, but also have plenty of time to disengage and chat with each other. Space *oughtn't* to be an issue, as I think this is the sort of event that Hackerspace might get excited about. There might be networking issues or other problems, but if we're on a public Wifi I think we ought to probably be okay.
Interestingly, *three* of the people interested in coming for the party have *never* edited Wikipedia at all, so maybe we can also have "How to edit your first article" type discussions or lectures. Would anybody be interested in organizing those?
Meanwhile, I'm going to try to get the people who signed up on Wikipedia but didn't RSVP to do so, so we know how likely their showing up is. I'll also drop e-mails to NLB and Hackerspace, and see if they'd be interested or have ideas as to how to run this.
cheers,
Gaurav

Greetings, Wikipedians!
There are only a few of us on this list, so we must make the best out
of whatever capital we have here. The Tenth Anniversary of the
Wikipedia project is fast approaching[0] and Gaurav Vaidya is helping
support a small event to celebrate the occasion.[1] Is there a way we
could make this happen in Singapore?
Terence, it would be great if you could personally talk to some of the
Wikipedian volunteers to join this list and find out if they would be
interested in attending this event.
Mohan, would you help Gaurav and Terence to find a venue and structure
the event? It could be an informal barbeque party where Wikipedia
enthusiasts gather around to celebrate the anniversary of our
movement. Funds can be made available from the Wikimedia Foundation
through the grants process.[2]
Andrew and Ren Yan, please join this list to keep abreast of volunteer
activities in the city.
Preetam (on-list) told me about a bar-owner in SG making donations to
the Wikimedia Foundation based on the number of drinks sold.
Guys, do let me know if I can assist in any way possible.
Yours sincerely,
Anirudh Bhati

If you're interested in attending, could you please fill in this form: http://tinyurl.com/wikipedia-10-singapore
I'm trying to get a good estimate of the number of people interested - three people have e-mailed me regarding this, so there is *some* interest.

Probably the best option for 5-20 people would be Hackerspace.sg [1] - they're usually pretty good about supporting open source/open content groups. If there's fewer than five, we could just meet somewhere for coffee and cake and reminisce :). If we're doing it at Hackerspace, I think we should try getting it a bit more structured: there'll be other people around, and we'd want to attract people to the cause.

Woah! Which is that? Sounds awesome.

Hi all, i'd be interested to attend. As I am posted overseas at the moment,
might not be able to help much in terms of organizing it.
Cheers,

Hi everybody!
For the Wikipedia 10th Anniversary celebration on Jan 15, 2011, what do you all think of organizing an Editathon? I've written up my idea of what this would look like at: http://ten.wikipedia.org/wiki/Singapore#The_Editathon_Proposal
I think it'd be a great way of getting those of you who have not edited Wikipedia before to try your hand at contributing, and would be a great way to celebrate what a wonderful thing Wikipedia is. I'd like to get your feedback on what you think of the idea before committing to this idea, so let me know what you think!
cheers,
