I strongly support and congratulate the efforts of Mumbai-Pune community in
planning & organizing the India Wiki conference this year. If I may speak on
behalf of the Bangalore community, till now we have no plans of holding any
such major event this year and would like to convey our heartfelt support
for the Mumbai event.
There have been lots of misunderstandings , tensions and confusions flying
around this list and I humbly appeal to all the stakeholders to join hands
and make this event a huge success. It is also imperative that the chapter ,
community and the Wikimedia India office to work together in the interests
of the Wikimedia movement in the country. I also request the community
members to be the actively part of the chapter and lead the chapter
efforts.
Wikimedia is also about free culture movement and we also have a unique
diverse cultural wiki community and it is natural to have differences but
let us "agree to disagree" when needed. I am sure the chapter may want to be
seen "less bureaucratic" in future while equally aligning with its own
responsibilities and charted goals. Let us also realize that the chapter
needs our continued support and understanding.
This is a national mailing list and possibly such flame wars may cause many
leaving the list, so let us still keep this a very beautiful place :)
All the best wishes , Mumbai-Pune !

Subject: [Wikimediaindia-l] Workshop on Creative Commons in Mumbai, India on June 18, 2011
hi,
The Mumbai Wikimedia community will be hosting a Creative Commons workshop involving a talk by Shishir Kumar Jha followed by an interactive session. Shishir Jha is the Project Lead, Creative Commons (India project) and an Assistant Professor, Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT-B) - more here: http://www.som.iitb.ac.in/~shishir/fac12.html
The need for this workshop was felt during Liam Wyatt's visit to India when we found ourselves explaining about Creative Commons to various Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums (GLAM in wikispeak) before we could even get to the GLAM idea. Since Shishir was involved with Creative Commons and was in Mumbai we took the opportunity to invite him for the talk. In addition to the Wikimedia community, we will also be inviting members from the GLAM community so that they are also exposed to the idea of Creative Commons.
You can sign up for the event here - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Workshop/Mumbai_Workshop_1
You can revert to me if you have any questions/suggestions or leave a note on the talk page.

*Times of India : "Online encyclopedia promotes itself as teaching-learning
tool"*
http://articles.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/2011-06-07/pune/29629403_1_onli…
*PUNE: Wikipedia.org, the largest online encyclopedia in the world, has
invited teachers and students in India to incorporate Wikipedia as teaching
and learning tool in classrooms through its Wikipedia India Education
Programme. The initiative coincides with the start of this academic year,
with Pune as its pilot project. Various colleges and universities are being
united to participate in the initiative, with students having the
opportunity to contribute by editing articles related to their syllabus on
Wikipedia, in lieu of conventional paper or report submissions.*
*
*
*Hisham Mundol, who leads India Programmes, said, "Information about India
and that which is contributed by its people is not adequately represented on
Wikipedia. We want to change that by increasing the number of editors from
India. The Wikipedia India Education Programme will promote this by
encouraging teachers in Pune to join a global community of educators who use
Wikipedia as teaching and learning tool in classrooms."*
*
*
*The Wikipedia team has therefore chosen 22 campus ambassadors in Pune to
help them in this programme.*
*
*
*"The campus ambassadors are essentially volunteers who would work with
teachers to incorporate Wikipedia and train students on how to write
articles on Wikipedia. They would support both students as well as teachers,
during the course of the semester. During the course of the initiative, we
will provide teaching material and example lesson plans, expecting the
professors to assign their students Wikipedia articles to write or improve,
as part of the class," said Mundol, adding that the project will cover a
wide range of subjects such as engineering and economics and media and law
and architecture and medicine and biology and any other area of academic
interest.*
*
*
*The team proposes to replace student reports and papers with Wikipedia
articles. "We will thus work with teachers and professors through campus
ambassadors to identify potential articles on Wikipedia that can be created
or improved through class work for that particular semester. Through the
initiative, we also hope to create educational materials in the form of
quality articles, including those about topics important to Indians, as well
as people all across the globe," said Mundol.*
*
*
*According to Mundol, Pune was chosen as the pilot city for having the
world's largest number of colleges and universities, which are attended by
more than 200,000 students. "The pilot project in Pune is being used to
experiment and learn from before any roll-out of a large-scale program
throughout India," added Mundol.*
*
*
*The Wikipedia team feels that students would get a lot out of the editing
assignments. "As opposed to writing a paper that they work on alone and that
which is seen by a single person, the students will now work collaboratively
with other Wikipedia editors. Thousands of people all over the world could
then refer to their contributions for educational purposes. As for the
educators who participate, they would engage and become part of a wider
global community of educators who are on the forefront of implementing new
teaching and learning practices, thus engaging with a larger, global
academic community," said Mundol.*

* The Indian Express : "Wikipedia Campus Ambassadors Pilot Project to begin
in Pune"*
http://www.indianexpress.com/news/wikipedia-campus-ambassadors-pilot-projec…
*The Wikipedia Campus Ambassadors Project, which involves volunteers
providing face-to-face support to university students on how to edit
Wikipedia and work with professors to incorporate Wikipedia assignments into
classrooms, will see its pilot project in the country take off from Pune.*
*
*
*The project that will start in tandem with the academic year has been
implemented successfully in the US. Hisham Mundol, consultant, India
Programs, said, “Pune was chosen because of the large number of colleges and
universities and the student population. The programme in the US has been
successful in terms of both the amount of information added to the English
Wikipedia (1.4M characters - 900 pages - in March alone) as well as quality
of information (an estimated 60 per cent increase in quality on edited
articles).”*
*
*
*While the execution and format of the programme might differ, similar
success in India is the objective, said Mundol. “Given the strength of the
education system and the drive of students and faculty alike, we are
confident of thoughtful, quality contributions,” he said. The project will
cover a wide range of subjects and train volunteers to work on them. Mundol
cites the vast opportunity for volunteers to contribute to Wikipedia. He
says, “This way, as the programme grows, professors from any subject area
will have the opportunity to enhance their curriculum with a tool to teach
their students to contribute information.” The initial Campus Ambassador
training programme will take two days, but ongoing training is provided if
the ambassadors stay involved from semester to semester. As of now, there is
no set number of Campus Ambassadors for the programme.*
*
*
*
Mundol said this will be determined both by the quality of applicants as
well as the number of classrooms that will pilot the programme.
The project will not be going beyond Pune till September. “The campus
programme has great potential, but we also want to make sure to start the
effort in a manageable way in order to ensure proof-of-principle and to iron
out details. A more controlled programme at the outset will help ensure that
supports are properly established and will also help provide opportunities
for programme evaluation,” he added.

Hello friends,
We had hoped to have Bishakha Datta, Trustee over for the Campus Ambassador
program/ Pune meetup on 04 June 2011. Previous commitments have forced her
to regret our invitation. She has wished the community well.
We have also been informed by Arjuna Rao Chawala that due to previous
commitments, it would not be possible for any board member to attend the
pilot campus ambassador training. However, they have passed on their wishes
for a successful conduct of program.
Warm regards,
Ashwin Baindur

We have a couple of interesting meetings yesterday with 2 Symbiosis institutes (SIMC & SIBM)
I know I had said we would write daily updates this week - but I'd like to change that to a weekly summary because that is probably going to be a better way of providing a comprehensive picture.
Trust that's ok!
